Been struggling with a dilemma lately on trailers, and a good portion of you all have "other" trucks than a Tacoma to tow the tractors/toys. This will be a longer post...picture heavy.

What I currently have or have access to:

Load Trail CC14 102"x20' with drive over fenders, rear stow ramps. When towing the crawler, I don't use the ramps. Now this is hard on the rear frame/hitches/couplers...etc. I plan on changing my evil ways and using some kind of ramp system. Loading the tractor is pretty easy, but humping these ramps around all day does bring on the suck if doing side work. This trailer is going away probably in the next 6 months or so since it's my brothers in Montana.

    90A6115E-2205-47D5-AF8D-89A7B57A53B8.jpg

20' will allow the Kubota 2501 with loader and brush hog will hang over a few inches. A 22-24' would be optimal.

This is my last 16' Load Trail trailer that I built drive over fenders and widened the trailer a few inches per side so tires were more planted.

    L2501d.jpg

Next up is a Texas Pride 28' 16K rated gooseneck low boy. This is not completely mine and we use it exclusively to pull doubles when going on longer trips or if one of the clubs tow rigs is down. Not a huge fan of 83" decks with wide vehicles. Most of our buggies are 88-90" wide from outside the tires. Now if I weld on 2x3 square tubing like on my last trailer to the stake pockets...not a problem.

    trwe.jpg

    What I need/want:

I would like to have either a tilt deck or mega ramps for loading purposes. No more humping 80 lb (or heavier) ramps around, bending over/twisting which as we all get older know this is a recipe for blowing out your back or a nut. This is a need.

    Mega/monster ramp setups on lowboy

    Mega/monster ramps on deckover.
    00g0g_ackNKW3MtLRz_0CI0t2_1200x900.jpg

Tilt decks: I never owned one. Some can't say enough good things about them and others say nightmare maintenance or if the locking pin gets bent you are screwed. Remember I'm not using this trailer at a commercial capacity. Only down side is I need the fenders to tilt with the deck. I would have to make some drive over fenders unless I can find a 102" wide tilt deck. Removable fenders work, but would be a PITA every time.

    00G0G_aZuKRYJJivoz_0cU09G_1200x900.jpg

Steel deck vs wood. I have always had wood. From my research it looks like about the same amount of maintenance for either one. Sanding and repaint/treating decks is common. Colorado uses Mag-chloride and salt solutions for winter driving conditions. Cleaning off trailers is a good idea for long term longevity. We can't say that Colorado will always be "home" either.

    Deck over vs low boy:

This is a tough one. Deck overs make weight positioning a breeze. In the picture I posted up top, you can see the last buggy needing to put one tire on the fender and one on the deck to get both rigs on. Hard to see, but this put extra stress on the frame (has no torque tube) and can see it was lower on the drivers side. This kind of sucks. This can be fixed by building something like this. Vehicle tires can sit on this all day long.

    131508646_3661356973886821_1632425533478300089_o.jpg

This PJ is set up really nice...except the damn color. If that wasn't General Lee orange, I would have already been in route. 24', 102" wide with drive over fenders, winch plate, Monster ramps...

    00j0j_cwwi8w3VJ2ez_0cU08B_1200x900.jpg

Deck over low boys (33-34" off the ground) have become more popular for this reason.

    00C0C_ak6bHCb7En4z_0cU09G_1200x900.jpg

I would ultimately love to get a gooseneck enclosed race trailer in 28-32' with 7-8K torsion axles, I would be in heaven. Keep toys in trailer and open up a spot in the garage. Cheaper than building another garage. This one is 2008 ATC 28', 7K watt gen....pretty nice. 20K
No more hauling rocks, but I have access to a couple dump trailers now anyway.

Ya got a lot going on here but seems as if your last option is the go to option. Every landscaper I talk to either has one or wants one.... if Going to do it one time than let’s grab an enclosed unit. Like you said it’s like having another garage!! Can always keep the stuff in there.
Comment: what will you be towing this unit with? Maybe I missed that part? Good luck brother !

    1st and 3rd picture, GMC 3500HD.

The enclosed might help with a move from Colorado to "wherever" in a few years. Not sure yet.

The tough part is finding one like this. Right now it's in Little Rock, AR and the only one in this length and price point on Racing Junk.

Gotcha! Sounds like it is the way to go for your needs. My buddy helped me move in his 35ft enclosed. 75% went in there! No worries on weather. Made a easy move with it:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I think that Pj is your best bet, keeping looking for one in Black if you don't like the Orange. Texas Pride makes trailers like that too. I have a friend in the rental business, just north of Houston, he buys nothing but Texas Pride trailers. I think he told he has 9 currently, and he plans to buy more.

I have a Texas Pride 21' tilt over on 7k axles, non drive over fenders, great quality trailer, I hate messing with ramps.

My vote goes to a Deckover Tilt trailer. I know that PJ makes one that's 102" wide, lengths from 22' to (I think) 26' or 28' and with GVWR's as low as 14k to keep you under the threshold for a CDL (if that's a concern; I don't know if you have your CDL or not). They also make a gooseneck version but I think the lowest GVWR on that model is close to 16k, so depending on what your truck's rated for you may be perilously close to that magical 26k line in the sand. And I'd also vote for a wood deck over a steel deck, personally. There's nothing in the world that's more slippery than a wet steel deck.

I've heard similar about the locking pins being a problem, but always from guys who don't run one. In my experience with rental units that I've used they're pretty stout. You'd have to REALLY be abusing it (poor loading technique, grossly overloading, etc) to bend one. The place I rent from has one that's 5 or 6 years old and has all of the original parts, which in my mind signals the strength of the locking mechanism since we all know how people treat rental equipment.

I’ve gone from a 20’ PJ open trailer to a 40’ Pace enclosed gooseneck with living quarters and I’ll just share my pros and cons.

    Open pros:
    -Easy to pull empty
    -Easy to strap down loads
-Nice for loading odd materials like sticks of tube with a forklift.

    Open cons:
-Not as secure on the road to curious eyes
    -No weather protection
-The gooseneck takes out a lot of bed storage that you need to find a home for now

    Enclosed pros:
-An extra garage spot is great, I love mine for storing the Tacoma or the race karts in for the winter.
-More secure on the road and you can toss smaller items in around the truck/tractor easily
-Being able to camp in it is awesome if you have bad weather.

    Enclosed cons:
-You get the same mileage loaded or unloaded, it’s a sail in the wind.
-Strapping down loads is harder and coming up with flexible strapping points for heavier items like the tractor is difficult/impossible if you change what you haul often
-Overall heavier than an open trailer.

All things considered, more of the guys I wheel with are starting to move towards enclosed. One has a 28’ tag with bunks in it that is sweet and another one is looking for exactly what you are in that 30-34’ range

Forgot for a moment that this was my fleet of trailers until I pared down to just the enclosed

I'd add another 'con' for your enclosed list:
Yes, it makes a great 'spare garage space' but that also means that before you can use it, you have to empty it.

John told me the trailers he buys for the business have steel decks, cause customers and employees abuse, and overload them, but he owns 2 Texas Pride trailers personally that are wood deck and he suggested to me to get the wood deck for my use.

I’ve had a deck over gooseneck for several years, I ordered it for a couple reasons. I had 2 jacks put on it, and paid a little extra to have it painted blue. It’s 20’ flat, 4’ dovetail.

I also built a steel dovetail for the last trailer I had. Believe it or not the metal (diamond tread) was super slick when wet but wood is as well.

I’ve used the deck over width more than I thought I would hauling other things as well.

If I get a tilt deck, regardless of materials it will most likely have traction cleats. We do have some winter wheeling out this way and do on occasion load the tractor up after bad snow storms to help others dig out. Nothing worse than sliding off your trailer even if it’s just a little bit.

Power tilts are cool, but not sure if I want to deal with the maintenance and 15* degree ramp angles.

Tilt trailers are awesome, my only question is how would you load two Jeep’s if you needed? I guess the power one would hold it up for the second one to be loaded, only tilt I’ve ever had was manual.

Good point. Even with a remote power tilt deck it would be sporty.

I’m pretty sure if I go low boy, the trailer will be no longer than 24’ and only worry about one buggy.

Good points. To stay under the 26000 lbs combined, I will have to derate my trailer to 14.5k max. This matters since I should practice what I preach.

The 28’ I pull with now is technically over my 26k limit since it has 8k lb axles under it. My GMC is rated at 11500 lbs GVWR. In the picture I posted, combined it almost 24k.

I no longer have a Class A CDL. Gave it up years ago.

I knew this was the right section. Living like Rick James in the 80’s!!! Some days, buying a DRW truck would have been a good thing.

The fuel economy is a concern. Having security on long trips also would be essential. In the past, we have had some ransacking happen.

Since our crawlers are so wide, unless it has escape doors on the drivers side it would be not a good choice for us.

    Great input.

Cutting and hauling brush today. I strapped my pallet to my bucket so I could tip it all the way forward to dump it. Working well. Gonna brush hog later with the 3205 and Swisher Rough cut.

So basically a 1ton truck and 16k rated trailer will put you at that 26k mark?

The short version is yes but it depends on the state what type of license you need.

The long version is that the licensing requirements vary quite a bit from state to state and you should understand your state’s laws. Many manufacturers understand the laws and will offer some different GVWR’s to help you navigate them.

-RV’s are exempt in most states.

-Some states such as IL, CA, TX have a non CDL class A for RV’s or personal use over 26k/10k GVWR trailer. I’m never one for regulation but this is one I can get on board with because it takes a ton of ambiguity out of the federal law in regards to the “used in commerce” phrase that is always a point of contention.

The reality is that most will never get hassled for it but it’s worth understanding.

I might end up with something like that and sell mine, but would like a 23' for the tractor etc. and I was just looking at 75's last week.

    Current TP tilt trailer.
