Fire Engines aren't classified as 'commercial' vehicles. They're federally exempt from that 26k limit.

It sounds like we are all on the same page here as far as getting/wanting CDL's go. I went years without one while towing truck and trailer combo's that were rated in excess of 26k. Finally I got pulled over and while the officer didn't give me a ticket, it was enough to scare me into just taking the dang course and getting my class A. It feels like a huge weight off my shoulders now every time I pull one of our heavier trailers.

    Repost but updated/edited..

Thanks for information guys, hopefully someone else who is buying equipment/trailers learn from this as well.

Most importantly, buy a trailer rated for 16k, but have the manufacture downgrade the GVWR to 12K per that Texas Pride / Kubota video. If the Trailer exceeds 10k gvwr without Farm plates, that's an automatic flag for an officer to inquire.

I have not bought a StupidDuty truck yet, but I'm looking for one. Wish I had more knowledge before hand, I feel like I'm doing things ass backwards lol.

    My trailer rated 14K.

If I don't get anything bigger than that Kubota SVL75 9k, attachments vary from 1k to 1.7k, my current trailer is good for the weight, I was wanting to get a DRW 1ton, but that would put me over by the manufacture stickers for GVWR with my current trailer.

Well shit the SRW 1ton SD Ferd is rated at 12,400, that's 400lbs over the 26k.

The F250 is rated at 10,000.

I was really wanting a flatbed, place grapple there and then tractor and attachments.

Or Flatbed with the bucket and box blade, trailer with tractor with grapple and shredder

Or Flatved with grapple, then trailer with SVL 75 and rotary cutter.

The equipment is for my farm, but like many others, putting the equipment to use off the farm essentially pays for the equipment...

Basically 175 days of side work covers the cost of the Skidsteer and rotary cutter.

I probably need to get a CDL to cover my ass for side work.

    Guys,
Keep throwing suggestions and beers owed will follow.

There are a few reasons.... Most states don’t require a CDL or even air brake endorsement for emergency vehicles in order to keep the pool of candidates open. Especially for volunteer/rural areas where membership is needed but extra requirements are a hindrance. Technically it must be going to or from an emergency call (no parades or any of that nonsense). Also, professional drivers and drivers’ unions didn’t want the requirement to be put in place because it would flood the job market with “qualified” drivers. Probably figuring that if people are willing to do one job for free, maybe they’d do other jobs as well? Then for professional FF’s with an open schedule, many do side work. All of them having CDL’s would definitely make an impact on the job market for drivers.

I’ve been a professional FF for about 10 years now and am one of maybe only 4 or 5 in my department that has a CDL and probably one of 3 with an A.

You can derate your own trailer or have the manufacturer do it. New registration will be needed to indicate the new weight rating. Derate the trailer to 12500 lbs. Why don’t you have Farm Plates anyway? Is Texas law a little shady in that department? Farmers here don’t need CDLs for the most part in CO. There are some rules for that though.

    https://www.a1engravingservice.com/Vin-Plates.html

Here is a pretty good article on federal CDL requirements with commercial businesses and 10001 lb or trailers. Might be a good thing to get a few stickers made “Not for Hire” and place them on magnets for the trailer.

    https://www.ntea.com/NTEA/Member_be..._GVWR_and_GCWR_in_specifying_work_trucks.aspx

I’m not one for being overweight when towing. I come close a lot, and with newer diesel trucks having huge GVWR’s now days it makes things even tougher. If I wanted to go out and get a new Duramax, a 3/4 ton now has about the same GVWR as my ‘16 3500 and exceeds my tow ratings (conventional).

I get flagged into one of my local DOT checkpoints on occasion depending on what trailer I have with me. If I have the Kubota on my 20’ Load Trail, might be a 5% chance. Lots of people out were I live have tractors for property maintenance. Not a red flag. Now if I borrow my buddies dump trailers (bumper pull/GN) and his skid steer...yeah, I’m going in. This past summer I needed fill dirt and a lot of it. I was building a road to the back half of my property. A local builder needed to get rid of good road base material for free. They even loaded it up for me with a front end loader. I ended up towing 200K lbs of dirt running non stop for 4 days. I straight up took 4-5/32nds off my rear tires. I was never flagged in. Now if I would have had my buddies dump trailer...oh hell yeah.

    AE00E438-0C59-4DFA-B006-2D488C1D2BF6.jpg

Here’s the deal and you have to be smart about how much information you volunteer. I do a few side jobs a year (maybe 10-14) with the tractor to help out locals around the area. The words that come out of my mouth if I do come into a mobile DOT checkpoint is “I’m not in commerce” and that usually ends that conversation. Don’t say “I’m not commercial” since that’s for them to determine, not you. If they ask you what the equipment is for....my personal use at my residence. Then you should probably go home for the day. Pulling into someone else commercial building site might get you in a little trouble. I have a buddy in Alabama that got deemed commercial after a traffic stop and was fined up to his eyeballs. He had a dually with a flatbed trailer for his side hustle lawn care business heading to his church to mow the grass and do some other small odd jobs. He would get paid, cover his fuel and donate his earnings to the church. Did he have to divulge all that information? Probably not his wisest moment. He ended up getting popped for no CDL, MC/DOT authority, no log book, and a slew of other fines which included the broken taillight on his trailer that got him pulled over in the first place.

Sounds like you do a lot of side work. Maybe it’s not a bad thing to make it a business and be totally legit.

Whelp, looks like I've finally got to do a repair on the TC18. Steering column started weeping hydraulic fluid last night while I was shoving snowbanks back, so a seal kit is in my immediate future, lol.

I need to rebuild the power steering cylinder on my Ford 4630, again. I rebuilt it a couple years ago and for some reason it's leaking again.

I talked to an old collector friend of mine this morning and we got to talking about blades for a 140. I told him I'd like to have one to push snow. He said he has 2. I ask if he wanted to sell one, he said I'd sell both of them. I said that's great cause we have 2 140's. Now if I can get him to price them where I can afford them. Here's a couple photos of one. They can go on front or under the belly.

This one is on a Farmall Cub, same blade just 54" wide instead of 60" like a 140.

Will convert the trailer to farm plates and
when I find a bigger truck I will do that as well too. I don't care to be in business, although it's easy money, I only care to run the SS machine long enough for others to pay for itself and I figured 170 days or so.

I didn't aquire my property until last December, it got hung up in a long drawn out process because one of the sellers was missing some paper work from a prior divorce, bought trailer in the summer to reach out to more customers.

Our family farm was in a trust then tied up with family BS/lawsuits, dad sold off his portion last January to get away from that drama. Brought home deer stands, feeders, equipment, tractor still had debt, so I put it to work, better than sitting at my house not being used. Dad was going to reinvest the farm money into another property, but my brother did not show enough intrest in the places that were available. So I just bought my own, with my own money and paid cash, and no way could I afford the Wife's grandparents ranch, which also is forsale and full of drama as well (owned by 6 family members) they can't/wouldn't decide on breaking it up in smaller chunks. I don't have to worry about anymore of that BS, unless the N laws die off before it sales.

Jesus. That sounds like a daytime drama series. Funny how family can make everything so complicated.

Smart to just strike out on your own. The farm plates is what will cover you in the future.

When shopping for a truck, research CP4 injection pumps. Ford has them in all trucks since 2011, GM 2011-16, Ram 19-20 and went back to a CP3 for 2021. I’m doing a CP3 conversion this spring on mine to avoid the 9500.00 bill.

When elders die off in the family, inherited assets change family dynamics, I can honestly say, some of my family have already disowned one of our aunts and a uncle, sad but its reality. They can RIP in their own selfish pity.

I just called my buddy and ask him what he wanted for the blades. He said you got anything to trade (we've swapped some stuff in the past) I said not right now. He said how's $100 sound? :bananadance:

Yes I did! Them things are $400 to $500 a piece, IF you can find them around here. They were mostly used in the snowier parts, not so much around here.
