Picked up an x540 that my grandfather bought new in 2008 when he traded in his trusty 316. Sadly, he passed away in 2015 and and it’s been in much lighter service since my grandmother downsized from the farm around the same time. My brother in law has been on the hunt for a mower for his house so we made a deal to buy the x540 for my couple acres and slide my 318 to him for their 1/3 acre lot. Win-win for both of us and keeps everything in the family still.

480 hours, 54” deck, locker, water cooled Kawasaki, and hydro steering. Fitting replacement considering that the x5 series are close to the modern equivalent of the 300 series

It doesn’t fit on the old 4x8 landscape trailer so I had to break out the big guns!

    got a little trailer
    1/2 ton truck
    bigger trailer
    much bigger trailer
    3/4 ton truck -- with a 460 engine
Now I was limited in that I couldn't get things off the trailer
got the forklift -- now within reason there is nothing I can't haul home and unload...
Problem is -- there is nothing I can't haul home and unload... :der::crazy::der:

    Reserected from the dead.
Good friend of mine had one. It was too expensive to fix the engine, so he scrapped it.

He is a small engine man, so if he said it was not savable, it wasn't savable.

I remember my Grandpa had one when I was very little. He told me that everything runs backwards on those, but they are basically bullet-proof.

I know that X540 isn't an heirloom but there is something about using tools or equipment that your family used.

My grandmother had a 316 that saw a ton of service. I remember putting around on it quite a bit helping out on the farm. She would use it to mow a low section of her farm yard that was often too wet to mow so it got very tall and she'd lug it through 2 foot of grass. She went through 2 engines and then traded it for a X584.

The X584 and an '86 F935 mowed her 10ac farm yard until she passed last year. Now my dad uses them but he cut back the mowed acreage to about 3 acres. Most of it used to be pasture anyway.

I'd love to get a hold of that X584 but he is still using it for light duty.

Hours mean very little on these. Motor is rated for something crazy like 5000 hours before a rebuild. Messick probably has all the motor parts if needed as well. Just avoid the gas ones is what I have been told.

Canopy, fitted seat covers, OBA with self leveling air bags, 100w solar, dual Rhino Rack Pioneer platforms, side & rear LED work/FU lights, CB, cell booster. 7x16 cargo conversion, 3" lift, 7'x6.5' fold down aluminum rear deck.
Got down off the mountain yesterday and spent a little time mocking up a layout. I decided that I am going to shorten the trailer so the front of the deck is at the front of the splitter and I will mount it offset with splitter on the passenger side and engine/pump, battery (getting a pull & power start motor) and tank on the driver side.
So, trailer deck will be 50"x50".

There’s definitely something to be said for family hand downs. Our family is terrible at getting rid of stuff for better or worse. There’s always someone at some stage of their life that needs it and it’s nice to see stuff live on. Heck, I just moved my couch from that I’ve had almost 10 years from when was a hand me down, to the basement since we finally bought a new one

Greetings from Virginia Beach. Man what a great find. Absolutely no one on the beaches. We have it all to ourselves! Beautiful 58F and raining with 25mph winds to keep things cool.

Seriously though we are still having a great time. Went to the VA Beach aquarium and shopped around town. If you are in town the aquarium is an awesome time.

My family's farm is full of stuff like that. The house was built in 1842 and my family has been there since 1883. My grandmother like to horde stuff and most everything was kept.

Does anyone have an idea of what it would take to get this old girl operational again, cost wise and mechanically? It's a 1950 JD 'B' that my Great Grandfather had bought new and then my Grandfather had it. I've posted it here before and I think the general consensus was it would really only be good for ground engagement or mowing large areas. Both of which I don't do a lot of so I'm not sure it would even be worth that aside from nostalgia.
