You're right, I do have to keep the sticks cleaned up. I ususally try to hand clean and also cut with mower just before leaves start to fall, even if grass doesn't need it. Mulch the twigs.

I used to have a piece of 6" regular corrugated on it because when I bought it the intake tube was missing. After I replaced it with the smooth walled pipe, twigs aren't as big of an issue.

Splurge on a set of ''gator blades,'' the design will do a far better job of chopping small sticks and leaves down to a size that will not clog up the tube and as a bonus, you can put quite a few more leaves into the bin before dumping. They really aren't all that much money and I just swap the two sets I have for the Grasshopper out each year and sharpen the one's I take out.

Speaking of a Tacoma forum, the ol GT500 came to my rescue today cleaning up the axle in the first gen. FZJ80 axles are insanely heavy compared to mini truck stuff

I was kind of looking for a Grasshopper front mount like that justifying that a snow blade attachment would make it a 4 season machine. (I can justify buying damn near anything if I work at it... ;))

    Then...

I saw one in person -- the thing is freaking huge, like take up an entire garage bay huge.

:gossip: I would still buy one if it was cheap enough, it wouldn't be the first time cool trumped smart for me.

Yeah but they mow so well around stuff. My shorter Kubota doesn't do anywhere as well and though the Grasshopper doesn't have an air ride seat, it rides as well as the Kubota.

It's also very easy to work on and the hydro system uses actual auto sized filters that actually filter. I would have bought another one except that they are around 18 K now.

Stihl makes a grease for that application. (They did, I assume they still do.)

It comes in a metal toothpaste-type tube, and screws into the hole (same threads as the plug). Squeeze a little, and you're done.

I twisted the threaded part of the axle shaft off on my trimmer (yeah, it's left-handed thread). I was able to find a replacement shaft.

However, I was unable to remove it from the head. We tried and tried, and could not get it out. I assume the bearings are press-fit.

A bummer, since I had to buy a new edger. Fortunately, it is a split-shaft, so I did not loose the power head as well.

Metal unheated space... hmmm. Is it a concrete floor? If so I would probably leave it uncovered really. Most peoples sheds are the same way and nobody (including me) covers anything up.

I like loosely covering with the cheap HF tarps. I think the plastic rustling in the wind keeps the mice away.

gravel. open ended rv covering. lots of breeze. not much rodent issue. would get a cat but there's plenty above that food chain here.

I lived up there for many years and kept my mower under the carport. When I thought it was necessary to cover it, like if the rain started blowing sideways, I put a blue tarp over it. Most things with engines in them are made to handle a little weather.

Update on cylinder, thank you all for suggestions on repair. Had a local shop weld for $62 we will see if she holds. Time to get blood in this bucket!

    Not impressed with the welds.

Please tell me you put the paint on.

I'd really have liked to see the welds before paint.

Beat it like a rented mule. If it holds, I'm wrong ...and happy.

Meh, it'll probably hold. Best weld for that would be 1/8" (minimum) 7018 stick rod turned up pretty damn hot. If I was using our 480V welder at work I'd probably have it turned up to at least 120a.
