Yep, I look for junk mowers with decent or usable motors as well. I just think it's absurd when a junk ZT with a good 25hp Kawi on it goes for $2-300 (JUST missed one... ugh) but the same 25hp Kawi goes for $600

Awesome. I run a 6' flail mower on my loader. It has duckfoot knives or "scoop" knives on it for a clean cut. It'll level my 4'-5' tall field and make it look like I maintain it weekly in just single pass. I love flail mowers.

Sorry to hear about your Grandma.

Small update on my IS1000z, I'm going to test the breather on it, apparently a bad breather on these things can cause puking oil. If not, I'm on the hunt for a replacement motor. No time for me to rebuild. If I could find someone to rebuild it for $500 I'd do that...

    Thanks.

I currently have Y knives on my flail and am going to see how it does, but the duckfoot style is what I am looking to switch to if I need a heavier knife. Since this thing has 0 support, even if I need 1 knife, I may end up switching all of them over to something more readily available.

Current plan is to run it and see how it goes.

Got the 1st coat of paint applied.

I need to do at least 3 coats. That blasting media is pretty aggressive, so a few extra coats fills in the pitting quite nice.

I really don't know why I put so much time into a rig that is realistically going to last another 15 years.

I just enjoy bringing a quality item back to a useful piece of equipment.PXL_20230628_210234540.jpg

In addition, I'm very calm when doing this work. I have no idea my blood pressure, but it's got to be quite normal.

Enjoying selling something that you had fun fixing is a lot better than having to sell something.

I'm done being intimidated by the clock.

There is a Toro ZT with 756 hours on the clock at an auction coming up this Saturday, not far from my house. The actioner said it was a 56", but in the crappy picture they posted the model looks like a Titan ZX5400. Not known at this time if it runs or has any issues. Of course, it's sold "as is." I know next to nothing about ZT mowers. My searches say it should have a Kohler 23-26hp motor, but that's assuming I got the model number right. Unfortunately, the only preview is just before the auction starts, which will be too late to ask for advice. What would y'all consider a good price for this assuming it runs?

It’s a commercial grade mower, missing a few safety guards.

If you have any questions about what to bid, how much do you want a mower like this; and what are you willing to pay? I would suggest that the best course of action is that you’re in the $2000-4000 range. A replacement engine is $1000-2000.

My suggestion is to decide how much you want to pay for it before you get there and check condition when you get there. Adjust your bid price accordingly.

It is a commercial units, but it's more of a residential model.

If it ran good, $1200. If bad engine or hydros, $300.

Of course at auctions, stupidity is rampant and it will sell way more than it should.

That's why I'm seeking advice well before the auction.

:fingerscrossed: It's a holiday weekend so hopefully, everyone else will be off to the lake and nobody will show up for the auction...

The best thing about that unit, is it has the best deck Toro made. Very high tip speed and heavy duty.

I wish I knew what hydros the unit used.

Let us know if you get any more pics or information.

I don't care what engine is in it, just about any brand will bolt in that chassis. There may be a bit of fabrication for the exhaust to fit in the body, but that is not a real big huddle to leap.

If it needs an engine, which I doubt, you should be able to find a good used one for $300~.

Decided to wire wheel and paint the front assembly. It only takes 30 minutes to strip off the hardware so you got room to run the wire cup.

That $8 in paint is the difference in selling it for $3k vs $2.5k.

Bright red is like a magnet. It just pulls peeps into the drive to check these things out.

Hi @koditten, I just bought a 2002 Dixon ZTR 4516K 42in with an upgraded Kohler CV18, I know its not commercial grade but it was way to good a deal to pass up, $800 for a working ZT thats not rusted/torn to shit, I expect it to will only need $150 to leave a nice finished lawn.
Do you have any suggestions for replacing the hydro fluid? What type of fluid so you recommend? The drive works fine but for all I know its the factory fluid, If you think I should leave it alone since it works I will do that. I do not see a drain/fill bolt on parts diagrams(Jacks Small Engines), I do not see anything in the manual about servicing them either.
Second question that Im not really worried about is all three blade nuts are rounded off, I have new blades and nuts already, I am planning on putting the ZT on a lift at work, trying a pipe wrench to remove the existing nuts and if that doesnt work start in with a torch and jumbo nut extractor, if that doesnt work I will cut mostly though the nuts sides and break them apart without damaging the spindle shaft threads. If you have better recommendations I would appreciate it.

Pictures of said mower, damn this thing is fun to use.

It looks like the Garden Gnome is skeptical of your buy.

Regardless, just about everything I work on uses 15w/50 mobile 1. In most cases the changing of the filter will drain 80% of the system. As long as you can find the filter and know where to add the fluid, it shouldn't be a big job to swap out the oil.

How do the stand on ZT compare to a sit down ZT? I assume you can see and maneuver better since its got a smaller footprint and you can easily see where the deck is.
