People always mis-measure decks, probably a 48".

They are well built heavy machines, if only used for mowing they don't really wear out with good care.

 

I have this DR Products machine, close to 20 years old, it is a magic machine - it makes messes disappear.

It has a Briggs Vanguard 16hp V twin engine and will process wood up to around 5" with ease. It was painfully expensive...

I justified it as a pretty much forever purchase, there are 2 big grease fitting equiped four bolt block bearings that can be bought at any industrial supply even TSC, 2 belts and one replaceable cutter.

I can't imagine you could ever wear it out doing just personal work if it is serviced occasionally.

The thing is built like a Mack truck.

This model is road towable, I made an adapter to pull it around with a garden tractor.
There are no mods to the chipper, the big bolt is where the original chintzy stand went, remove it and uncouple the ball and it is ready to go on the road.

great old machines! Onans are good motors. not a lot of HP, but the gearing in these oldies make up the difference. also very easy to swap these out with a good honda or kawi.

it just so happens ive got a really good PTO powered 3 point chipper for sale. Used very little still on the shelf under the leanto.

This is funny.

I ran down to Franklin a week ago and bought a mower. Looks to be very close to where I grabbed my latest Toro Z Master.

Regardless, I like the Onans quite a lot. So smooth! The only issue is the carbs are not easy to find. If you got a good carb man that can go thru it, you won't be disappointed.

 

I just thought of a potential issue I may have with this motor swap… is the charging system going to support the electric PTO on the Ferris?

 

Can you link the NOCO charger you use for desulphating?

I've been looking for a decent battery reconditioning charger for some time.

 

This is the one I use, great for small batteries, takes a while on a car battery. The larger versions would be much better for bigger batteries.

edit: I got this one on a deal a while back, paid like $18 for it.

 

I have not run into any that won't maintain the battery with the PTO magnets energized.

I've got a buddy that has 60" Commercial Deere that I thru a HF 670 into. They claim the HF engines only have a 5 amp rectifier. He cuts 2 acres a couple times a week and has had no issue.

He gives the battery a deep charge in the fall before he pulls it and puts it on the garage shelf.

I think the only ones that have issues are the pros that cut 10 hrs a day.

 

I wish I’d thought of this earlier. I’m reading that this thing could only have a 3A charging system on it. Might be a dual coil, some dc to battery and some AC for headlights. I read about adding a rectifier to the AC side to boost the dc voltage.

I’m invested now, so I kinda have to make it work.

 

Did it previously have an electric pto? If yes, most likely the engine has a rectifier and can supply power to the PTO as well as maintain the charge on the battery.

 

The Ferris has an electric PTO clutch and a 15A charging system on the Kawasaki motor.

The donor machine has a manual pto lever and apparently only has a 3A charging system. I might be able to rewire the stator for more DC voltage. If not, I’m kinda screwed.

 

Not really. A fully charged battery will keep those magnets pulled in for a long time with no other load.

I'm talking 2 or 3 days.

It's the fuel injected engines that are energy hungry and will shut down when the voltage falls off.

 

I’ll just test the output. Found other documentation stating it’s a 9A charging system. Not sure if they offered this machine with electric PTO or not. I’ll just test it and remove all doubt, move forward from there.

 

Gotcha, that’s good to know. I don’t mind putting it on a charge if needed a day before I Mow, or putting a larger battery in if needed. I gotta stop worrying and just roll with it as per my usual style rather than freaking myself out lol.

 

I'm curious how many volts A/C it puts out when you test the outer contacts on the regulator. (Middle is DC volts).

Thanks, but I think it is a little too big for my b7100 16 hp at motor and 13 hp at pto old 79' . If it was bigger I might have to just jump on it.

^^ yeah a 7100 is a great little Kubo! had several of them & just sold one last month! Just a little care & they last forever!

but it is too low on the PTO Hp for this chipper. pretty sure they say it needs 19hp @PTO for it.

it worked great on my 2601 kubota. Wife just decided that she didnt like making chips as much as she thought she would. (she got sweaty).

thinking about picking up a brush cutter/bush hog for my mini excavator. would be a lot easier to do around the ponds & road ditches that cant do with the tractor.
