    Update on this post.

    I installed the engine, ran fine. Noticed a vibration on the serpentine belt idler. Found the shaft that I installed to the adapter was wobbling.

    Had to pull the engine and reattach the PTO shaft. Found a smudge of grime on one side of the PTO flange. It wouldn't allow me to completely seat the PTO.

    Cleaned, reassembled, reinstalled engine and test ran.

    These 500 series Toro machines like the Predator engines.

    Got a bit done today too.

    Went to fire up the 24hp Briggs and make sure it runs well before the transplant. Wouldn’t start.

    Kid I bought from threw a bunch of parts at it, he said he’s a parts changer so I was planning to go through it all anyway. Pulled the fan cover, coils were gapped about 1/4”. Yikes. Re-gapped using a business card and moved to gapping the plugs which were also way off.

    Bypassed the seat safety switch for ease of working on it.

    I started and ran this machine to get it off my truck. It just wouldn’t run except off ether. Checked the fuel pump (also new), fine. Fuel solenoid, no click. Pull it, clean, turn key, click, reinstall. Time for lunch.

    Let the gas from my pony tank gravity feed to burp the system. Try for a start, got a few pops. Go for another start and it roared to life for the first time not having to start off ether.

    My shaft adapter came today, I’ll clean off the Briggs tomorrow and ready it for the transplant.

    In the meantime, I decided one last hurrah for the Kawasaki. Made 15 passes in my front yard, one of which was apparently over a ground hornets nest, lucky just got one sting, and it died here as if I turned off the key switch. Weird, was running great.

    If it died like you turned off the key, I'd check the fuse.

    Also make sure you turn off the key. The clutch may still be pulled in and drawing voltage from the battery. It will kill a battery overnight. I've had 2 customers this summer that did that and I had to ding them for new batteries.

    First things I checked were fuses, all good. It’s habit to turn off the key, don’t want the hours creeping up and battery dead.

    Yep, sure does.

    Had about 45 minutes today to play around. Got the Briggs 24 pulled. Tomorrow I have to try to pull the Ferris over to my basement. Not too far, I’ll be disengaging the hydros. Then start to pull the Kawi 23.

    hadnt planned on it yesterday... but saw a window in the weather & bright sun.

    jumped out on the ZXT & got everything near the house done, right side, left side, back & fronts done. that comes to about 4acres. looks good!
    funny i threw mud in some places & got choked to death by dust in others.

    still leaves me the far side near the cattle farm to do & the very far corner to do that was just too wet. lil more than an acre between those 2 spots.

    BUT we had some huge thunderstorms & lightning roll thru with downpours late yesterday & thru the nite. not sure thats doable now & the forecast is rain the next 3 days. BUMMER! that will make those 2 area's pretty dang tall for a single cut & too soft for the bush hog/tractor.

    also not sure what i can accomplish today. still got plenty to do. but none of it is things i "want" to do. its that initial push to make it happen vs setting here cruising the forum & petting my dogs. once ya move? then its all going to happen. lol

    PS: getting that flail or bushhog decision narrowed down for the excavator. :) then we can really start messing some stuff up.

    Love me some flail action. My 6’ John Deere 25A with scoop knives will take my field from 5’ tall to looking like I maintained it with a mower all season in just a single pass. It’s impressive.

    Considering you’re tossing the idea between a brush hog and a flail, you’ll probably want hammer knives instead, they handle brush much better, but still leave a nice cut on the not so woody materials.

    I’ll vote flail every time if you can swing the cost.

    Can’t tell by the pic, but the Briggs24 is going to bolt right in. Same footprint as the Kawi23.

    Figuring out the shaft adapter now, then probably pressure wash. Time for some water. It’s hot.

    Test fit Briggs 24. All lines up. Oil filter is in a tough spot. Will look into relocation kit. Not something I have to worry about now.

    Done for the day. Lost about 8lbs of water weight, I’m filthy but the mower is the cleanest it’s been since I’ve owned it.

    Need a longer crank bolt to make the adapter work. Or a 1/2” spacer to use the crank bolt from the donor motor.

    It’s all bolted down, the hydro drive pulley and PTO clutch pulley are installed but need a longer bolt as mentioned.

    Fuel line is a dead ringer after I moved it to the right side, no issue there. Oil drain is in a decent spot, oil fill a little tight but ok, oil filter will be a PITA to get to with the right side hydro lines. I’ll have to mess with it or relocate it.

    Checklist:
    -Figure out the electrical (only ONE wire from stator… will be interesting…)
    -crank bolt or spacer
    -hook up fuel line
    -tension hydro drive belt (should really be replaced but I want to make sure the swap is good before going for it.
    -slip deck belt back on
    -fan shroud bolts

    -test fire on the Ferris

    -possibly get a Briggs decal to replace the Craftsman decal :rofl:

    The Briggs24 should get me by as long as it’s got enough power. It feels significantly lighter than the Kawi23. Just working on it, it’s obviously not commercial grade. The Kawi seems laid out better, more robust, overall better built. Makes sense since the Briggs is off a Craftsman riding mower. :shrug:

    Alright, this is what I’ve got left for wiring:

    FERRIS:
    Orange/White = fuel solenoid
    Violet= alternator
    White = engine magneto

    BRIGGS:
    Grey= fuel solenoid
    Red= 3A DC output from stator
    Black= 14v AC for lighting

    So:

    FERRIS : BRIGGS
    Orange/white -> grey

    Violet -> ??? (This is switched power that went to the rectifier)

    White -> Black (coils/magneto)

    So am I stealing the rectifier off the Kawi, hook the purple to one leg, the AC (black) from the Briggs to another, and cutting the diode out of the DC side and hooking they to the third? I dont know… I’m a bit lost.

    No idea what to do with the switched + Purple…

    Like I’ve said, small engines aren’t really my thing. I’ll be searching the web in the meantime.

    And there’s my answer from a few pages back. So I’ll be cutting the diode out, putting each 14VAC leg to the regulator from the Kawi23, and hooking the positive 12v wire to the other leg of the rectifier (far right), yeah?

    Rectifier on the Kawi23:

    The middle one is your 12 volt DC.

    Don't run the motor with those 2 wires hooked to the voltage regulator like that.

    If it was me, I'd cut that connector off and just crimp on some female space connectors.

    That pic is of the Kawasaki with its regulator still attached. Nothing on the Briggs has been run yet.

    I’ll be cutting/splicing that regulator onto the Briggs.

    So the two 14VAC wires will go to the outside two terminals and the rectifier will put out DC current from the center. Got it.

    So the violet wire that’s got 12v+ to it when the key is on will go to the center terminal and charge my battery then, correct?

    Edit: as always, I really appreciate your help!

    Yep. That's how most are wired.

    To be honest, it always bothered me that most manufacturers use violet for the positive off the voltage reg. To me it should be red. I'm sure there is a reason.

    Ok, the only reason I asked is because the Kawasaki is set up exactly as the pic I posted, the violet wire was on the right terminal. That’s why I assumed that my two AC wires off the stator on the Briggs would go to the left two terminals, the violet to the rightmost terminal.

    I just found out my brother has the manual for this Ferris. :facepalm: That could have saved me a lot of questions. He’s gonna forward me a pic of the wiring diagram and give me the manual next time he passes through.
