I know a few people who have had engine failures with them as well, around 2,000 hours.

thats good info to have. thank you very much!
those are bigger machines & different motors than the 302 series. depending on which its a turbo `1.1c1 or the bigger motor up in the 40hp range.

the little 302 series has the same Yanmar motor that ive got in the 21hp & 24hp versions with no DEF/regen or other problem makers. more though : im a poor boy & cant afford a new one. it will have to be the older tried & proven set up.
found a nice one yesterday over in PA for around 20k w/1400hrs on it. still just out of my play range unless i sell this one first.

ah you read my mind! was assuming that it was the Perkins or the Mitsu.

the little 302 series still uses the Yanny motor. at least up to the years ive followed. probably cant find a deal on one newer than a 2016 that will be able to meet my budget.

I have a 2017 Gehl Z17 which is a re decaled Yanmar vio 17 that I. bought new the end of 2017. It has about 900 hrs on it now and it has never caused me any problems. Still wish I would have bought a bigger machine but was too cheap at that point to pay 10k extra to get the z25 with a thumb that they had in stock at the time. But I was only 27 at the time and had wanted one for years at that point and when this one popped up for 23k that winter to get it moved I bit the bullet and bought it.

Only a lawn tractor, I don't use it for pulling or snow removal.

I have a 1999 Murray 42" deck with the 17HP Briggs engine. One of the drive pulleys seems to be attached by a shaft to the bottom of the engine.

I've developed an oil leak at the engine, trying to chase it. Would that shaft/pulley have a seal of some kind?

I've had it about 13 years, I mow about a half acre with it. Don't really need it except for spring and fall cleanups, but at those times it saves me so much time and physical labour.

It probably needs a couple of other minor jobs too, but if the oil leak is a big job it probably makes the decision to replace it a wise one. I'd have to send it out as it's beyond my abilty.

Mine does have the hydrostatic Peerless transaxle that was problematic but mine has always run like a top, so I know selling the machine would fetch some money to balance out a new machine.

Looked at this one online, seems okay as it has the BS engine as well. Thoughts for the money?

    Thanks for the vid

In the 3-4 years we've had it there have been zero issues, very reliable

Normally we split 20-25 cords a year. The house is heated solely with wood . Occasionally when temps hit -40 or so, the propane furnace helps.

We like the high deck as both myself & my son are tall.
Imo it's about the "touches" required to process the wood. The Brute Force reduces the number of touches required, much less than our old Built Rite.

    Downside: cost

I need to buy a 42" ZT mower. Has to be 42" to fit in my trailer.

    Less than $4k

    Recommendations?

For residential use look at Cub Cadet.

If you ever need parts they are available from thousands of sources.

Mine is a 2006 model and everything I have ever needed is easily available.

For other brands make sure there is more than one dealer within convenient distance.

The super built decks are nice for sure and they cost more too. They usually come on a more expensive machine.

For a quality machine in residential use with reasonable care the stamped decks seem to hold up fine.

Comparing a bargain price Murray or Dynamark stamped deck to a Cub Cadet stamped deck is like comparing a Chev Aveo to an Impala - different classes of machines.
