That tank with the timer on it looks like a filter system I have with a timer on it. Ours does a backwash every 3 days for silt.
We use crushed up calcite/limestone for filtering.
In the beginning it was used to also filter out iron and silt, but the iron is not a problem anymore. Does that tank have a filler hole on the side? If not then you gotta pull the timer thing off and put in media for bottom filter and calcite on top of that. Heading out to garage to get a picture of my setup.

If it uses that much water to purge, then I'm sure it's not happening each night... maybe not happening at all. This because I've never seen any large amount of wet ground outside the well house. I was just repeating what I had been told, which I'm pretty sure the person that told me said it urged each night. But I could be remembering incorrectly. Do you know who the manufacturer of that timer device is? I see yours has a cover that maybe has a name on it. Mine doesn't have a cover, and I can't figure out who makes the thing to find any documentation.

I dunno about a filler hole, ill have to go look when it warms up a bit. But this calcite/limestone comment is exactly what I need to know... what if anything I need to do to maintain that black cylinder. If you have a link to any instructions that would be great!

Ok 1054 is tank is 10" diameter and 54" long I do know that much. You have the same setup I was just explaining about. Now if you pull the timer off and it is attached to pipe going to the bottom. And at the bottom it will have a cone basket filter. That sucks water up and into your house/appliances. Around the basket is media/small river pebbles and on top of that is the (calcite) is what I have. About 60#s and mine back washes every 3 days for silt/iron. Had water tested at the well.
This is what my setup looks like:
    IMG_20231211_072854362_HDR.jpg IMG_20231211_072921327_HDR.jpg IMG_20231211_072949115.jpg IMG_20231211_072957214.jpg
Now if you open the top there's a small shaped o ring don't loose it and make sure it is clean when you reinstall.

Let's figure out if we have similar systems and the we can go from there as I have instructions on how to service my system.
If you look at the timer and you see a piston that is used to let water flow or not just for backwash only

So some Google-fu later and I can see where things can get confusing. It does look like yours is a softener rather than the large filter. They use similar tanks. However, you have a softener head and even says the same instructions as mine for the regen.

I don't see any kind of access port on the side of the black cylinder. I guess it's all done through the top. o_O

It appears to be one of those sand or resin style filters as opposed to a large filter you change out. Honestly I'd rather have the backwash style as there's no filter to change out.

The top pipe goes out through the side of the wellhouse. It's hidden by the cylinder in my pictures. I think that's where the "purge" goes.

This is what I have. I can service this and do it every year. I have instructions written down.
@DES2009 ok pipe is drain. So you are going to have to get inside to see what kind of media is used as filter. Or find out where it goes to see what it is. In any case DO NOT OPEN UNTILL YOU RELIEVE THE PRESSURE IN THE TANK. Hang tight gonna get my ditections.

Ok. To be clear, I'm not having any issues with it at this time. But since info online seems to be SCARCE, I am trying to gather some info before something happens to create a water emergency. There's always the well service companies, but I like to do it myself when possible or to at least know enough about what's going on to avoid being taken to the cleaners.
