A walk behind tiller will beat the absolute snot out of you, especially breaking new ground. I quickly got rid of the Home Depot special I got last year. That and I'm too lazy to tend to it, and the well doesn't the capacity to water it with the dry summers we've getting recently.

To be honest, I'm not worried about the walk-behind because I have a wife for that - she can use it. :p

If I get a pto-operated one, I'll have to remove/re-do fencing to allow the tractor in there....hrm...everything costs $ and I hate it.

I think that's a great idea. Beats using old chain boxes over and over again. I've had one of those on my Christmas/B-day list for the past several years. Maybe someday I'll get one.:pout:

This probably doesn’t answer your question but I have a late 90s Troy Bilt Horse and it sure gets the job done for me. This year my garden plot is approx 25x25. Yeah it takes a while to do, especially first of the season, but I’m satisfied with it. I don’t really have space (or $$) for a tractor right now anyway.

Front mounted tine tillers are killers, rear tine tillers, if properly designed, are pretty easy on you. I ripped up more ground this year and it was pretty easy.

I was waiting for a detailed description.

Rear tine walk behind tillers are pretty user friendly.

Front tine walk behind tillers are an ass kicker!

Regardless, don't expect to chew up sod with a rear tine walk behind without getting abused. It's work!

A 3 point unit will chew up sod, but it's still gonna be slow going.

You can't be greedy when you are breaking new soil that is grass covered or sodded. You just take about a two inch bite to tear up the root system, then you take another couple inches, then you drop to your desired depth. Let the machine do the work. I am still using a Ariens ''Rocket'' tiller from the late 60's and it still makes easy work of tilling.

My tiller has a cast iron gear box that doesn’t use belts. If the blades catch something solid it takes you for a ride and then stalls. No issues breaking new ground taking it slow with multiple passes.

I have a 3 point tiller that I’ve used from my father in law before. Absolutely beats using a walk behind unit by power and size but I’m not sure for my use I would ever spend the money to buy a unit. It’s been nice to have on the handful of times I’ve used it but I think I could make that’s argument for most attachments haha

I got a middle buster this year upload_2024-7-3_6-32-39.png
This busts up the sod and you can control depth. After a couple of passes then I pulled out the rear tine tiller and it broke up the clods and then I could use the middle buster to dig rows and till again if needed. I use my tiller to help control weeds also.IMG_20240623_071632910_HDR.jpg.

Ok here's a tip for you. ... Even on gear drive rear tillers there are usually belts that drive in the middle. Troy builts were always this way. To keep from burning or busting a belt...

There is what they call "sod buster" tines. & You go real shallow to break that top layer up. Then after you make a few passes? Then you can go regular times & get a little deeper.

That great 8-10" deep Troy built soil you see in all the adverts? It didn't happen in one pass. That was usually 6 or more passes & the only other option was me doing it by hand. So all those repeat passes were way better than hand doing.

Spent many hundreds of hours on that Troy built. When it wasn't tilling it had a snow plow on it in the winter. New belts every year & used it so much that we had to rebuild the motor when I was 14.

When I rented a rear tine tiller to cut now ground the rent all also rented me a sod cutter at half rate. Said that saves wear and tear on the tiller if the sod is cut out first. worked ok.
