I don't think so. I think people just get aggravated at how much dealers make on trade ins by low balling them and then selling the vehicle for a huge profit. They make money on the new vehicle they sell us and make another bundle on the trade in. Of course, they make most of their money servicing the vehicles. Ever seen an owner of a dealership in a middle class neighborhood ?

I know when I go to the dentist that it's not going to feel good but doesn't mean I have to like it.

Me... I will try for months to sell a vehicle privately before I take it for a trade-in because yeah... I don't care for the dentist or trade in offers.

Does not make it right to low ball and then turn around and sell for a much higher price. They are making money off the vehicle you are buying...

It's not that they're making a profit most of us find aggravating. It's how they like to cheat us out of a fair offer in order to make a HUGE profit.

I guess you'd be okay paying $5.00 for a loaf of bread because the grocery store has to make a profit.

How can you call it cheating you, if you willingly accept their offer? They buy low, sell high. Its kinda why they're there.

If you negotiate a deal and sign the papers and don't like it, sure. But how many of us have walked out of a dealership after being given a low ball, ridiculous offer ? I would bet many, many on this board have.

agree with you there, but to go so far as saying the dealership is a rip off. Thats a bit ridiculous. Their prices are higher for service, parts and usually vehicles. If you dont want to take a hit on your vehicle private sell it. But Dealerships have a purpose and a place, some cant get financed outside of dealerships for whatever reason. You cant walk in and out of Mr Smiths house with 0 money spent that day and drive home a new vehicle.

While it could not be considered "fair", they're there to make money and will continue to make money whether you go there or not.

IMO. Do what makes you happy. You have no one to justify your decision with other than yourself (or maybe your wife) ;)

In my experience when people come to forums to ask; "should I do this..." They've already made up their minds and just need some affirmation of their decision.

Life it short - do what makes you happy - even if it doesn't make sense to others.

Nobody here would begrudge a dealership making money. If they don't, they do out of business and then we have to travel further to find one. It's not the point. The point is, we'd like the convenience of selling our vehicle to them in a trade in but they're are out to make such a high profit and lowball us on offers, we don't have that convenience unless we want to pay a very high price for it.

Dealerships can low ball your trade here in Washington because we have sales tax. Sure I could get a couple of grand more private party but you are going to turn around and pay it all back in sales tax. You also have to deal with flakes and absolute morons on craigslist.

Starting to think you work for a dealership. I have bought plenty of vehicles and have done the back and forth with dealers. My experience is that they would rather get that extra $100 commission than save the customer $1000. I can give you multiple experiences I have had but I don't want to.

I do how ever only deal through Truecar through USAA or Costco auto buying program. I bypass the dealer bullcrap and most of the time get a better deal with the online sales rep.

Say what you will, but my experiences speak for themselves. Why do you think the dealerships hate and want to ban Tesla?
