So since buying a tent trailer ( 10 ft box ) 1760lbs dry and doing two trips loaded with the family ( wife and three kids ) with the box loaded with kit/wood/fuel and water, Ive noticed the V6 has a somewhat frustrating powerband. Trailer weight was approx 2000lbs and about 400 in the bed. I know this has been said over and over and over. Even with my 6 speed manual and 4.30 gear set, Im already frustrated with its pulling ability. I also plan on upgrading the trailer as my family grows. So the option on the table is the ZR2 with the duramax. Ive heard mostly great things about the truck and the motor. I love my Taco and Ive put some cash into as well ( ko2’s, trd pro wheels, trd skid plate , trd pro grill, tonneau and trd pro shifter. Its a great looking truck and again I love it, its kind of frustrating to have consider this after 6 months of ownership. Looking for opinions and if anyone has or knows someone with a duramax zr2. Attached is the look I would go for as I had AEV goodies on my JK.

Sell it. Get the Chevy. Good luck.
You will be disappointed though. Get a full size. 3/4 ton.

I don't think he needs a 3/4 ton to pull a 2k lb trailer, but any 1/2 ton should do much better.

If you're going to be towing off-road in the Colorado/Canyon, just make sure your trailer has brakes. I saw this posted in an Overland Group I'm part of. Doesn't matter what engine the truck has, the frames are all the same.

A wife and three kids sounds sounds like you need a full-sized truck!

I would seriously rethink any GM product (Colorado or Canyon) with the Duramax engine.

Before buying my Tacoma I looked hard at the GMC Canyon with the Duramax. I joined the https://www.coloradofans.com/ group and read about too many (for my comfort level) Duramax engines that completely failed (thrown rods, etc., etc.). I do not think it's as good as it sounds and the GM eight speed transmissions are legendary for problems!

Read the posts on this internet forum written by "OldChevyNut" - https://bit.ly/2KWDYPk . He has some scathing comments about the automatic transmission and the fact that there is currently a class-action lawsuit regarding the GM 8L90 and 8L45 transmission problems - https://bit.ly/2VelttR

181 HP isn't going to light the world on fire out of the dmax either....

3/4 ton to tow 2k lbs? Bro, do you even lift?

...There's no need for a 3/4 ton to tow 2k lbs.

Tundra would be a great choice, you could tow a big trailer with it.

Um yeah that duramax is hot garbage, this isn't an Lp5 were talking about this is a shitty little turd duramax. get a full size especially if you plan on getting a bigger trailer down the road anyways.

I may be looking into a Tundra as well, for my family. Tacoma is a little too tight. I like it out of the other 1/2 ton trucks. Love the rear roll down window. Wish the Tacoma had that!

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
When our kids were small, we also started with a large tent trailer, after a year or two we upgraded to a fully self contained 27ft TT. I pulled the tent trailer with a 1989 full size Bronco with 302. I bought a 1989 F350 CC with 460 and pulled that thing all over with that truck, then upgraded to an F250 7.3 CC diesel. I guess what I am getting to is with the wife and 3 kids, if you enjoy the TT life, look forward to your truck needs. You can never have too much truck and when you go 3/4 ton you are getting a much better tow vehicle with much better axel's and much more superior brakes.

Full story on that post: New Colorado owner decked out truck with camp gear, loaded
I'm curious if the 4th gen tacoma will have that. The 4Runner has had it since the beginning, the Tundra has it.. It's not like those two little black bars between the windows are weight bearing...
