If 4x4, you will get mid to high 20's more than likely through private sale on the west coast. That truck looks super clean, I would consider buying it, but I already have one lol

You are correct, better too keep the truck,as its way too nice. And later if you need another truck ,you will end up paying a LOT more.

I recently had my first pleasant encounter at a dealership. All other times have been horrific. One held my drivers license hostage thinking that’s how to get me to agree to buy a car.

If you’re truck is worth 20, they might offer 10. Then, I’m not going to be able to sell this, 8500. Look at that, 8000. The windows are dirty, 7500. There’s a scratch there, door ding there, 7000.

They think we’re all stupid. Luckily only half of us are. If you think about how stupid the average person is. Half of everybody is stupider than that.

Very good advice - For the record, I have never traded in a vehicle. I work with the dealer to order what I want and pay cash. They want to talk trade because they can make a profit if I do. My feeling is simple - I'd rather make the profit than them...Their profit on my new vehicle is enough. I always have all the maintenance records to show anyone that looks at my older ride - I love to challenge prospective buyers to find a dealer that will let you see what you are getting. One of my favorite lines - When you were at the dealer shopping, and you pulled the dipstick - What guarantee do you have that the fresh oil you see did not come from the FIRST oil change that vehicle ever got. As for price - I shop around and determine what dealers in the area are getting for what I have and set my price - slightly- under that. Has worked every time. My only issue this last go around is having people show up and want the vehicle and then walk because they don't know how to drive a stick ! As for the finances - I meet the buyer at a bank and have the bank hand me a cashiers check (this keeps me totally out of having to deal with money) the next stop, with the new buyer, is the local vehicle licensing office - This is where the change of title takes place and (if applicable to your area) the location where the buyer has to pony-up for the Sales Tax. Once that's done - I THEN hand them the keys and the deal is done. Both parties are happy and you don't have any risk.

    Hope this advice helps others.

Alot of police departments are setting up craigslist type of meeting places in their parking lots, id reccomend doing it there. Ive seen a person in the hospital after being attacked with a hatchet at a private meeting for a sale. People are fucking crazy these days. Also listened to a podcast recently where the husband went in a test drive and was murdered.

Also, don't sell that truck. It's way nice, work extra hours or sell other things.

Alternate option, you still won't get near what it might be worth private sale, but sell it outright to CarMax. You will get more than what a dealer will offer for trade in value, but less than private sale. They will cut you a check right there after an inspection, no haggling, and no waiting.
I did this when I bought my 2015 Tacoma by selling them my 2012 Jetta GLI. Trade in value was only going to be around $15k, at the time I could have privately sold for around $20k, CarMax gave me a little over $18k, I turned around and paid off the loan and used the remaining balance toward my Tacoma at the Toyota dealer in a matter of 2 days. Saved me enough in headaches and time it was worth it. It cost nothing for them to appraise the vehicle and give you a 7 day (I think) offer. If you don't like the offer, you can walk with no obligation to them.

I still recommend keeping it if you can.

    Do you have another vehicle???
I personally wouldn't sell it. Immediate regret!! But a private sale will always yet you more money in the long run..

Funny, this is pretty close to exactly how my Tacoma was purchased. Except the seller wanted cash so I called my bank ahead of time to ensure they would have enough paper money. From the bank, straight to the dmv, sign here, pay sales tax, done. I suppose the time period between the bank teller and signing at the dmv left me venerable. Dropping one of the envelopes full of hundreds and having them spill out across the floor didn’t help.

During my research, I found dealers who would refuse to sell to one not planning to finance with them. Then I saw on the news, financing is how dealers make the majority of their money now.

Lots of great advice! Thanks for taking the time. Im going to wait until the spring to decide and keep saving maybe just hit a small loan off the 401k to finish up the backyard. Leaning towards not sellig because even if I sold it for high 20’s I’d end up paying double to replace the truck in the future and it’s paid off already. Plus to hit those numbers it looks like it’s gonns be a fight, meanwhile the truck is in the garage and doesn’t get driven in winter.

I honestly would keep it, save up for a down and get yourself another truck. Start your collection of Toyota trucks lol.

my 2centavos... traded '06 in '18 on new. Hated to leave her a got a woefully lownumbered but helped to think during the painful process how she was the truck of my life how I gave her everything and how she gave me everything in return. You never get back what you put in except satisfaction and FUN

Some people look at a vehicle as just a vehicle. Get it with a am radio if possible. Hand crank windows, no ac, base model no frills.

Others consider their vehicle a member of the family. Give it a name, talk to it, fall in love with it, customize it to suit their needs.

I definitely fall into the second group. Even when a old ex neighbor gave me a 80s Datsun 510 pos. My girlfriend named it Penny due to the copper color. I treated it good but never fell in love. My 87 El Camino got plenty of talking to. PLEEZE start, come on you can make it, and finally STOOOP.

I agree with the second group! Got into an accident with mine and now it may get totalled. I got super sad dropping it off at the body shop thinking it was my last time to drive her :pout: the way I see it, it's an extension of you and you've put a bit of your personality in it. So I take it personal when they say it may not be worth fixing. It will ALWAYS be worth it in my eyes! We've I'mseen some shit together. I'm hoping if they do total it they give me a good value for it and let me buy it back cheap.

I've always sold my vehicles private party. I just couldn't stomach the tightwad offers from CarMax or other dealers. I'd rather take a little more time and get hundreds (or thousands) more for the vehicle. I've never had much issue with hecklers trying to lowball me, I'd tell the ripoff artists to get lost. But there's always the potential. GLWS

Perfect explanation...sometimes a dealer will give you a good number. You have to shop around and negotiate. My friend who is a dealer offered me 13k and I ended up doing private sale for 14k but it took a month.
