You can’t run a gasoline truck without electricity, but you can run an electric truck without gasoline.

The Tacoma is an electronically controlled, electric motor started, spark plug actuated and electric alternator sustained gasoline powered vehicle.

Gas vehicles also have multiple ECUs and/or PCMs utilizing information from electronic sensors all over the truck.

    For an electric truck:
Ditch the gasoline engine(and oil) and the electric starter and remove the electronically controlled transmission(and fluid), electrically actuated transfer case(and oil), electric rear locking differential, front differential, alternator, plugs, coils, gas tank and exhaust system and replace them with an electric motor and large battery.

The rest of the parts are similar:
There’s a small battery in both the gasoline truck and electric trucks, along with wiper motor, windshield washer reservoir motor, window motors, seat motors, HVAC fan motor, electric power steering in some trucks, door lock actuators, electric lights, electronic driver display, mirror motors, electric rear view mirror, electronic brake sensors, electromechanical brake booster, electric mapping/music....

500 mile range electric trucks with reasonably fast charge times are coming soon.

I like changing oil and fluids and doing all of the maintenance on my truck, but I’m not going to miss it.

    Gas stations run on electricity.

Pay for some solar panels and you’ll supply most of your own power for many years.

I agree with you 100%. EV's and solar panels are the way. I have solar on my house and my biggest bill in the record breaking heat last summer was $12. But, it is unlikely that anyone is going to charge their car on solar alone. That said when one of these cock tease companies (I'm looking at you Alpha) finally come out with a small truck you can bet that I'll be charging it at least in part from my panels.

The only oil you're ditching is engine oil. Transmissions, transfers cases and differentials all still need oil/fluid regardless of whether they are being driven by a gas motor or electric motor.

EV's don't have transmissions or transfer cases in the traditional sense. It's more of a gear reduction unit with a 100K miles between changes. For a 100K miles a Tacoma owner doing DIY changes every 5K miles will spend about $500 or $1,000 for Jiffy Lube. When a 100K clicks on the clocks the EV and ICE will change all the fluids. The ICE will be a bit more expensive because of the transmission and transfer case fluids.

Forsure....I was just making a point that the transmission in a Tesla has fluid like every other transmission.

Which is why any repair work after warranty will be $$$. Something minor and it could become inoperable. \

Similar to a lot of BMW and Mercedes vehicles today. A lot of repairs can be performed by dealer only costing in the thousands.

I also would love to know the age of people here. Even the average age of the owners of the different generations of Tacoma’s. I joke all the time with older guys at work that they had all the cool cars growing up in high school and what not, and their faces light up and they love telling you about them. Looking back I couldn’t tell you a vehicle I would have bragged about if I owned it with what was available. I think in this day and age we are starting to see some amazing rides starting to come back that are pretty bad ass both in electric and gas, and it’s exciting! But this comes back to the average age of people. All this technology that has enabled us to get these numbers in power back and still pass emissions, tech packages, and refined ride comes at a cost. From my experience most people in their 20s he’ll even 30s that I know, don’t own a house or have any real property, they lease vehicles, and rent apartments. So who are they really marketing this stuff for? I laugh sometimes at how much some of these vehicles cost! I wouldn’t even consider buying a 80k truck geared at off-roading and actually take it off-road. I also wouldn’t be able to afford the HP numbers the older generation could obtain at the age of 18 even right now in my life lol. So I have a Tacoma, generally an average priced midsize pickup where I live, but can also be modded out to whatever I want it to be. I knew about the shitty gas mileage and don’t give a shit, the truck does everything I need it to do and more. Not to mention it hold its value. Overall smart buy in my opinion.

I recently left a Ford dealership and got to drive and see EVs being serviced.

First off I would say wait a couple years before buying one because the technology is changing so fast with batteries.

Second. I constantly heard the mechanics laughing when a EV came in needing a battery replacement after they fell out of warranty. Replacement batteries were running close to $4000 plus the cost of labor to install one. Its not like just popping the hood and dropping a new battery in. The ones I saw being replaced required an engine puller and a lot of hardware to remove and disconnect. As the mechanics put it "There goes all the money everyone thought they were saving driving an electric car".

Third. They say electric cars have fewer moving parts to replace but I would be asking myself what would one of those electric motors cost you if they go bad. I believe some E Vs have one at each wheel. Then there is also all the computers and electronics that can malfunction.

Fourth. I have to speculate on what the trade in value will be on a EV? You have owned it for a 3 or 4 years and know the battery is going to need to be replaced in the not to distant future and the car dealers are going to know that too. Who wants to get stuck with replacing one of those batteries? Your going to eat that not the dealership.

Fifth. Is the environmental impact. I'm not sure but I ask myself what do they do with the batteries when they are no longer usable? Hopefully they can do more with them than they were a few years ago when they were shipping dead batteries to Third World countries for them to crack apart at their homes and letting the acid drain in their yards to recycle the lead. I had read a story about that and the birth defects and sickness doing that caused.

I am going to wait 5 years and see where things are then before I consider electric cars.

Cybertruck starts at $39k about half of what a loaded F-150 goes for. I'm in New England and pay $0.09 kw base and under $0.12 with "fees" (??) that I have no clue about, but added to each month's bill.

If your EV's value is dropping like a rock it is because it wasn't built by Tesla....Nissan Leaf? Sure! Chevy Bolt? Absolutely! How about those poor early adopters with a Chevy Volt? Hung out to dry and abysmal resale.

A stainless-steel, 500 mile range Tri-Motor is only $69k w/14,000 lb tow rating. Hardly "ridiculous" when $100k Platinum King Ranch Limited Deluxe crew cabs are floating around everywhere ;-)

Can't paint all EVs the same, that is like saying all midsize pickup trucks have fantastic resale just because the Taco does.
Your points about being aware of electric costs and resale value are valid, but they vary depending on the particular EV which needs to be in the calculus.

I'm curious about age groups too. Are the older guys the ones that are all negative about EV's or is it the younger crowd? I'm in the older guy's club. And IMO EV's are the future. I grew up driving 60's muscle cars, my first car in high school was a 65 Mustang. And with 20/20 hind sight those cars sucked big time. The old muscle cars are eye candy for sure, but
    [IMG]
Eye candy or not they leaked oil, burned oil, no emission controls meant the stunk to high heaven, struggled to last 50K miles, drank gas like it was juice, and the list goes on. I'll take a modern car any day of the week.

Today EV's certainly have their problems. However in doing my own research most of them are not that big of a deal or are part of a FUD campaign being put on by oil companies and traditional auto makers. Those that are a big deal are deal breakers for some people. My brother in-law tows a freaking huge 5th wheel across the country with a dually Ford 550 diesel truck. He's not going to be trading that in for an EV anytime soon. But, I'd sure like to buy an Alpha Wolf to replace my Tacoma - different uses, different trucks.

I'm not sure of the age thing buying E Vs. Two of my coworkers recently bought them. The one lady who is in her 40s bought a Tesla and the owner just picked up a Mustang EV. He is 55.
I am 61 and honestly dont see myself going that route. I have a 65 Galaxie 500 in the garage that I enjoy driving to much. I love the sound of those Borla mufflers and 3" exhaust to much. That's missing with E Vs.

The Alpha Wolfe looks cool, but it also looks like it would fall apart after a week of using to deliver autoparts.

Not a problem for me. However, delivering auto parts would be a perfect task, lots of short runs where a huge battery isn't needed. Anyway, what can you say from some web page cgi image and no specs at all?
