So true. There are a bunch of cars near me that are all sound and fury even when idling. EV's are the speak softly and carry a big stick kind of fast.

According to what I can google for every Ford Lightning on reservation there are 9,600 CyberTruck reservations. What the delivered version of Cybertruck looks like is anybody's guess. But by a margin of 9,600 to 1 the Tesla truck is crazy popular. Ugly, but popular. If I could buy it today it would be a consideration, but it suffers from the same problem as the Ford Lightning. It is TOO FUCKING BIG. Neither truck is competition for the Tacoma. Well, at least on the size front. An EV version of the Ford Maverick might compete with the Tacoma, but it is too small.

I think it's going to be a very long time before there is an EV truck competing in the midsize truck market.

Do you mean competing with the Rivian R1T?

the key is to hit the ground running

the projection by manufacturers are inflated

many have paper expectations ( brochure language )

few meet or exceed benchmark standards & the costs are NOT comparable

I stand corrected. The Rivian is only 5" longer than the Tacoma. So there is competition in the midrange truck market. This honestly makes me very happy. I hope the Rivian sells like hot cakes. Would I buy it? Near future, no. Couple of years down the road, maybe. I plan to use the Tesla for road trips, and the supercharger network is their secret sauce. Elon has said the supercharger network will be opened to other makes, but the details of when, how, price have not be released.

Rivian prices start at $90K + tx here in Canada. Even with the $5K rebate is still about 3x more than I am willing to spend on a vehicle to lug me and my stuff around in relative comfort. The new Ford Maverick Hybrid ticks all the boxes for me and a PHEV and all electric are bound to follow. Sure the new electric trucks are flashy looking, powerful, trendy and all that good stuff but only affordable by movie stars and doctors and lawyers much like the Hummer was back in the day.

I would definitely consider the Rivian, but even with incentives, it's far, far more expensive than a Tacoma.

The F150 Lightning is compelling IF they bring well-equipped models that don't cost an arm and a leg. It's also way bigger than I need.

The Hummer EV looks cool (saw it at SEMA) but it's massive, way, way bigger, and more expensive than I can stomach.

The Tesla Cybertruck is essentially vaporware right now. No one has any idea what the final one will look like or when it will actually be for sale, and eleventy-thousand $100 fully-refundable deposits are essentially meaningless.

I still think Plug-in Hybrid is the future (at least in my lifetime). Give any of the current fun 4x4's (Tacoma, Bronco, Wranlger, etc) ±30 miles of EV range and a good hybrid powertrain for the gasser miles and you've got a winner that won't cost you any gas for the majority of daily commutes, while not inconveniencing you in any way for longer drives and backcountry work.

    Interesting thread. I currently have:
    - 2010 Pontiac Vibe AWD commuter for me, 40 miles a day. Cheap and Toyota reliability.
    - 2017 RX350 Wife's SUV, doesn't commute far at all, 20 miles a day.
    - 2022 Tacoma SR DC 4x4 (Just swapped from a 2018) Garage Queen driven on Sundays to ride moto, mtb, haul kayaks, etc

I was just thinking, do I really need this Tacoma. I don't tow anything large or haul anything that I can't do with my two other vehicles. I think a plug-in hybrid or full EV Tacoma is only 2-3 years away at this point and maybe I should sell off the Tacoma now and then re-evaluate in a year. I'm like many others here though in thinking the fuel savings is nothing compared to the high cost of an EV. A cheap used commuter car like a Civic is much better on paper. I tried to get my wife to not get the RX350 and wait for the new EV Toyota SUV coming out next year but she wouldn't go for it. I would have been stoked to just have that EV SUV and my Vibe for cheap commuter car. What to do......

I have a deposit on the Rivian R1S and my original intention was to sell the Tacoma for it, but I decided I'll give the R1S to my wife instead. I just love my Tacoma too much, and realistically I don't see myself wanting to wheel the Rivian too hard or load it up with plywood from Home Depot.

EV's have their place in the world and I'm excited to get one, but I just can't part with my Tacoma yet.

    IF i were interested........................Im NOT !!!

Id get the ford 150 for local driving / work

only consideration to evaluate would be the ‘ E ‘ mode ........little else

    otherwise after spending Ur $$$$$

    essentially U r a ‘ BETA ‘ tester simply whining/bitching & cryin about

    deficiences & defects

most NEW ‘ E ‘ vehicles have NO set parametres or goals..................little to gauge success or failure

NO 1 knows where to set the goal posts

Yeah, with 600-800 hp and barely a fraction of the moving parts they have now (not much to break), there's not much to dislike except for the cost and insufficient charging network for now. I may be convincing myself to sell the "new" '22 Taco.

Just thinking of this thread while reading about battery fires. Maybe steel skid plates required before off-roading EV trucks.
Even if you drop it onto something and punch a hole in the gas tank that won’t automatically burst into flames instantly like a battery pack.

In April, a Tesla Model S crashed in The Woodlands, Texas, after the speeding driver failed to negotiate a turn and jumped the curb. The car then hit a drainage culvert and a raised maintenance hole before being stopped by a tree, according to an investigation report by the National Transportation Safety Board. At that point, the Tesla promptly burst into flames.

Firefighters needed four hours to douse the flames, in part because the battery kept reigniting. When the blaze was finally over, about 30,000 gallons of water had been poured on it—what the department normally uses in a month.

EV batteries burst into flames instantly when punctured? Didn't know this. Rivian has skid plates over their batteries btw.

It's probably no more dangerous than riding around with full tank of flammable gas.

That's a problem with the fire department not being prepared for the incidents they are responsible to respond to. Water on a lithium ion fire?

In case of auto traction battery fires, about all fire fighters can do is cool area down to prevent fire spreading.
