straight forward functionality is really subjective though. Give someone a car that has never seen one before, they won’t be able to start it up and drive/control it, even if to you it is all straight forward intuitive controls. Technology changes, we have to learn to use the new stuff as it comes up because that’s just how it goes.

And I do agree that the Rivian looks cool, but I’m not ready to jump on the EV train until there is a way to drive beyond its range.

For example, I drive my truck beyond it’s range, I pull in to a gas station, fill up the tank, empty mine, and keep driving. 15 minutes. If I were to drive an EV, run out of power, search for a charging station (which would have to be done well in advanced so you know it’s there), plug in, go to bed for a few hours while it charges, and then keep going. It’s not as simple as ICE because our infrastructure is based on that system. It’ll change eventually though I’m sure.

Nope. Other than Tesla none of these EV companies have a rolling product. Not only that, they never had one to begin with. Basically paying these companies huge sums of money to be their guinea pigs. So to buy a car from a company that has 0 history is quite a gamble in my eyes. Other things to take note of. Tesla is light years ahead of these other guys in R&D, manufacturing infrastructure and selling their cars. And they still have lots of problems. It's a massive risk buying a product from a company that may not exist 2 years after. So that being said, Tesla is the only real option for buying a mass produced EV truck with some security that the manufacturer wont go under. It's way out of my price range, way way way out there. I'd never be able to get one without going into a massive debt and then getting one of those awesome 10 year loans. I'll stick to what I can afford. If I had the money to buy one? I'd need to try it out first.

Lol, wait, so you're telling me that Ewan McGregor and Charlie Borman didn't just wrapped-up filming of Long Way Up using the Rivian R1T as their chase vehicles? It was all photoshops and make believe? https://www.thedrive.com/news/30094...rifies-with-off-road-harley-davidson-livewire Or maybe they weren't rolling products, maybe they've taken the next step and they've introduced flying trucks?

To me it sounds like, "I can't afford it so it's stupid and there's tons of problems" but the fact is, Teslas have been extremely reliable, most of the EVs out there have been quite reliable in fact. It seems most people are afraid of what they don't know. This is the same kind of argument that used to be all over with, "I will never use FI for a backcountry vehicle, it can't be fixed and is too unreliable. It must be carbureted so it can be fixed" this still goes on in the offroad motorcycle world where FI is a newer tech.

Lol, wait, so you're telling me that a couple of promotional vehicles on a TV show is and indicator of full production runs and company financial health and product quality? How many R1T's have been delivered to customers hands so far? Oh that many? WOOOOWWW amazing work there at Rivian!!! :rofl:Fisker managed to build and sell some cars how's that working for them? You say they're extremely reliable without giving one single source of information. Guess I'll take Joe Blow's word for it on Tacoma World  Tesla has had plenty of production problems and reliability issues, let's not kid around. How about repair turnaround time? Go ahead and read about some of those stories to see what an established automotive brand like Tesla has been dealing with. It's good to know that Ewen McGregor and Charlie Borman were able to show that none of that will actually be a problem for Rivian once those products hit the streets, whenever that will be....

So now a "rolling product" == mass production?

I am pretty fascinated with the Tesla, especially the fact they don’t use advertising to sell their products. Watch any sporting event or TV show and it’s an endless parade of automobile commercials.

Telsa’s company's communications manager Even Sandvold Roland shared:

We do not pay for advertising anywhere in the world, it is our global policy. What I can say is that the production company would use these cars because they thought it was relevant to the series. We just lent the cars without paying for it.”

I’m pretty excited for the 0-60 in an off road rig. I will be dumping my taco for a Rivian SUV when I’m ready for my next project. Some inspo photos: F5145726-E5BC-4A41-A482-6CD51850817E.jpg0788E03D-5E21-4ACD-BDE7-608AD1042E8F.jpg 63872742-F19D-47BF-9DD1-BC959E995111.jpg

A rolling product in my definition is something that I can go out and buy. So far nobody has an available EV truck to purchase. Tesla at least has other EV "rolling products". Rivian has got nothing apart from a couple of press/promotional cars. Nikola has got nothing other than some photoshop renders.

I predict Tesla stock will soar to well over $1k a share soon. Wait for the new battery announcement later this month. The Semi has been put on hold until they start new battery production. They should also reveal some Cybertruck updates.

Batteries are improving - AND getting cheaper... Motors are similarly improving. Tesla started from scratch and their manufacturing could improve for the benefit of consistent quality, spare parts supply, and cost of production - said that, they have done a great job so far.

In the not too distant future our trucks' performance and functionality will be MUCH better than the traditional tin boxes... and it will be electric - we'll all love it! Oh- they suck because you cannot buy one now?! That makes no sense... The point is that you will be able to buy them soon...

If these trucks cost were close to the Tacoma - I'd buy one right away. The Nikola, IMO, looks better than any truck ever made. The Rivian's also looks great - the front end is not my thing - but I can easily overlook it. It is a great performing Truck. The Tesla Truck's looks are also not my favorite - but I could even overlook that! - It will do the job for most people.

Third-party charging is not an issue in most urban locations. - A lot of it is low cost (Subsidized by others)... AND unless you do not have a smart charger, the cost of maintaining a charged battery at home is still much less than buying dino-fuel (and will be in the future). Oh you've noticed an increase in your electric bill? No Duh... Do the math and you'll see it is MUCH less $ than buying gas... (Still sad? That can't be helped...). In fact with a smart charger you can offer your battery for Grid services and actually get $$ back...

And remember that you are mostly topping off. when charging... users charge opportunistically... Not recharging from 0% every time as mostly done with ICE vehicles. - Stop for lunch, that's more than enough for your top off charge... You also need to sleep - certainly good for a 100% charge even from 5%. For this reason, most of the time, an EV in use has plenty of charge... (Some posters indicated having to spend the night somewhere to recharge - that assumption is just silly - even today... and the infrastructure is improving by the day...)

My commuter is electric. My Tacoma will be my last ever ICE vehicle... and sadly, my last manual transmission...

I have 2 Tesla’s , my 1/18 model 3 and my wife’s 6/17 model x. Both vehicles 100% reliable. Zero maintenance for both vehicles. Charging a non issue with Tesla’s supercharger system, and my home system, which is supported by 45 solar panels. I don’t think I will replace my 2016 tacoma trd off road 4x4 with a Cybertruck. It’s paid for and suits all my truck needs. Probably will outlast me. It does feel really dated compared to my Tesla’s , but still is a great truck.

I suppose time is completely subjective to each person. What might be defined as "soon" by one person, that same time frame maybe an "eternity" to another one. In my opinion "soon" would be about 5 years, and I still think it's being generous. I'm not as optimistic as you are about "soon." Across the world we only have 1 established EV brand and that's Tesla. Last year they raised prices across all of their models, which is the exact opposite of things getting cheaper. Perhaps its capitalism at work, when you have the market all to yourself you get to set your own prices, or it could be something else. Time will tell I suppose but I doubt we'll be seeing any EV-Pickups in the price range of the Tacoma in the next 10 years.

Maybe their prices will drop again once they move to Texas. California is the worst for any business.

Doubt it. Vehicles never drop in price so it's no surprise to see prices go up. The difference is compare what you get today vs. what you got when EVs were first introduced...much higher battery capacity, better battery tech that lasts longer, quicker charging, etc.
