I was wondering how the trade in market is going? My OR AC has 108Kmi on it and is pretty good condition. KBB has a trade in range of $19,500 to $22,400 with a mean of $20,922. Thats a range for "Good" condition. Add about $1,000 for "Very Good" condition. Have folks found that the dealerships are giving a good value or are low balling?
    Thanks..

    Try the online buyers.
FYI: very good condition is nearly unobtainable, ask any dealer, it would have to look like a museum piece.

KBB is a good starting place. I personally wouldn't accept 19k for a truck that they'd turn around and sell for 30k, but thats just me. I understand the process, trust me; I'm not downplaying that they have to make money too. I'm just saying IF I were to be in your shoes, I'd be negotiating from a point of "you guys have 3 other 2016-2017 100k+ trucks on your used lot for $27-32k, I want to be in that ball park" verses "KBB says its worth 19k, your offer of 16k is tough, what about 17.5..."

These figures are obviously just estimates and change geographically, but the point is, look at other trucks of your similar build and see what they're ACTUALLY selling for. Negotiate from that number, and if it happens to fall in line with what KBB says, and you think thats fair, go for it.

Edit to add, try to land a concrete buying price before even mentioning trade. If they bring it up, say not interested, only want to sell. Then when you land a price, talk about trading. Trade values can be inflated by making the customer pay the price on the new vehicle loan.

As you will hear at the dealership "KBB don't sell cars" or "If KBB will give you that much, take it". It is all part of the game. Your truck is worth what someone else will pay for it. Years ago, I never traded a vehicle in. I would always sell it privately. It was always a hassle. People are pretty awful and very unreliable. These days I get rid of my cars sooner at a higher value and it doesn't make sense to sell privately because of the difference in sales tax savings. I find it is just as much of a hassle to find a decent trade in value. I know there are a lot of idiots out there, but I try to not be one of them. They usually will give more for a trade, then want to get full price for the new one. Then if you get a good price on new, they low ball you on the trade. It is really a process that leaves you wanting a hot shower to get all the funk off from them.

I think $20,000 is attainable. Closest I found was a 2016 TRD OR with 75k miles 2 owner no accident retailing for $27,000. Figure they derailed it ($200). Safety inspection ($250), then the random repairs like possibly windshield ($200), tires ($800) and they’ve put $1,450 into it. So they have to own it for $23,000 before expenses to make $2,000 on it.

The crazy market on these trucks has deff started to fall. Regardless of brand reliability, value really starts to drop after 100k miles.

Best thing you can do is gather a few trade in offers from local dealers. I would think your truck should fetch a low 20k trade in.

I'll be doing a cash buy so no loan terms to muddy things up. They already said the sale price would be msrp, which sounds like the current sale price folks have posted. I do not have a contract yet since the new truck is still in transit.

Never tell them your paying cash at first. They make less money when you pay cash and are less likely to wheel and deal.

Tires have about 9/32 and a new windshield. I think they'll just have to detail it and it should be ready to go on the lot.

Unfortunately I'm not a good brass tacks negotiator. Not that I'll let them walk all over me..

I'm looking at the dealer's website and they have 44 tacos listed. All have mileages of 1,000 to 60,000 miles and from the mid $30s up. Maybe they wouldn't be interested in or low ball my truck?

Fortunately for you, they aren't either. They're not in the business of negotiation, they just exist to make money. The point I was bringing to the table was to diminish the amount they make off of you. Negotiate from the top, not the bottom. You say you want 27, they offer 20, and yall work your way towards 22ish. You say you want 19, they offer 15, and yall settle for 17. It doesn't really concern you what the dealer ultimately gets out of it, you just have to figure out which end of the spectrum you want to ask from. You should already know going into it that they don't intend to give you what you want for it, so start high. Theres nothing to lose besides them saying no, we'll give X and no more. And X may be higher than your expectation, so don't tell them your (real) expectation.

Or quite the opposite, used tacomas in that milage range may not last more than the few days it takes for a unit to hit their sites inventory before its flipped and sold. Just go talk to them buddy. Keep your keys in your pocket, no exceptions, don't test drive anything else; just go to talk about YOUR truck, and make it clear you have intent to drive YOUR truck back home that day. They'll let you know really quickly whether they want you to do that or not, don't worry.

Thanks folks. Looks like I should start negotiating at $22K and see what the response is and go from there. I live near Steamboat Springs and if I drive around town with a "For Sale" sign or list it in FB marketplace I think it might be 2 days and it would be sold. Just hate dealing with no-shows and tire-kickers...

When I sell a car, I look on autotrader, etc, to find similar models and miles for the car I am selling and use KBB as a guideline. If KBB says$20K on good, and you find similar ones in the area for $26-30K, I would ask $22K knowing that they have to put a few dollars in to sell. I have bought and sold nearly 30 cars in my life time and this has been a successful formula.

Yeah my brother is coming with me so if the trade-in part of the deal goes south we'll be driving 2 tacos back home. Where I live the closest Toyota dealer is >100 mi away in all directions. The one I'm working with is about 105 mi away.

Since you've got some time, you can call ahead and "try to make an appointment" with someone. Even though appts aren't typically needed to deal with someone from a dealership, it shows your intentions are serious, you've done your homework, and you're ready to make a deal. They'll probably say you don't need an appt, but I guarantee they'll have someone one phone call away who knows about you when you walk in the door. Save yourself the hassle.

Are you suggesting I make a separate trip to the dealer to negotiate the trade in price and then return when my new truck is ready to pick up?

Thats your call. I'm suggesting you call ahead before driving 100 miles to a dealer to let them know why you're coming. They'll (hopefully) have somebody there waiting for you to make the process faster, so your 100 mile return trip doesn't turn into an all day event.

I wouldn't personally be talking about prices on a vehicle thats not already on the lot that I haven't driven though, but to each their own. So to me, it would either be 2 trips, or 1 trip when the new truck arrived, but my preference shouldn't determine your course of actions.
