You are looking at year 1 depreciation. You will take the biggest hit in the first year. Problem is no one is going to pay enough for a 1 year truck versus buying new.

5 years down the road that truck will still bring 24k. Negotiate with the dealer. Can't hurt to try. Ask them to show you how they came up with that value. If they missed anything point it out.

I feel your pain. When I sold my 2011 Tacoma in 2013, I went to the dealer....I had a DC, towing package, roof rack, etc....23k. I was pissed....and the dealer knew I would be pissed...he even told me when I pulled up that he knew why I was there and he was cringing to tell me. I tried selling private sale for 2 months, but people are not willing to buy a truck for 27k that way...they'd rather spend that money at a dealer...So I ended up just taking their offer.

It's just the way it is.

I had bought a 2012 Dodge Durango for 35000 in June of 2012, in May of 2013 I decided I wanted a truck. It was Memorial Day Weekend, the dealership I went to was offering 1,000 dollars off, so I went and checked out the Tacoma. I loved it. The salesman told me they would give me "Top Dollar" for my Durango. They gave me 24,500 for a truck I hadn't even had a year yet. I knew that I was taking a huge hit, but in the end when I have my Tacoma paid off in 6 years, I will get probably 2.5-3 times more than what I would for a 6 year old Durango. Other vehicles just dont compare when it comes to holding value.

What's the number you are expecting to pay in the end? If they low ball your truck, then low ball the other vehicle you are buying. Go in with a number. If you value your truck at $28k, and you want a $35k vehicle, then say you want to be out the door only financing like $4-6k. We just bought a new vehicle for my wife(first new i've ever bought), went in with a set number, they actually gave me alot more than I was expecting on a trade but didn't come off the new vehicle much. Either way, I was happy.

Dealers don't use KBB, or NADA. They go off auction reports, and black book, which are dealer only price guides. These are much closer, but lower to rough trade in on KBB, and NADA.

+1, they will look at KBB and NADA to get the loan value because the bank will do the same. My dealer showed me the auction numbers, KBB, & NADA. The austion numbers were a fair amount lower. He knew that it would not fly so went with NADA or close. Trade value less the tax break was within $500 of what I thought that I could sell it for myself and no hassle.

If you tell them you are going to just sell it yourself they may up the offer. The dealer I bought from really wanted used Tacoma's. They are or were hot around here. Sell fast at a premium. Most dealers cannot enough. Gen1s in great condition are really hot.

The prices at the top were the trade in values. The prices at the bottom are the selling prices for a trade in at that value. Mint only brings 27K per that read out

Every dealer I've delt with has been negotiable on trade in value.
If you have a Carmax around you, take it to them.
They are almost always the highest trade in value.
They give you a quote good for a week.
    Take that to your dealer.
I did this and they matched, no questions asked.
This got an instant $1000 on to trade in.
    Good luck.

My dad was in the automobile business for 40+ years. He said dealerships always made more money on used cars than new. I'm sure that is still the case.

I sold cars for over a year and have many friends in the business. When they take in a trade it gets detailed and thrown out on the lot($100). If it's new enough it doesn't even get detailed unless it's in rough shape. As far as certified goes that's just an x number of point inspection and a warranty(couple hundred dollars tops).

Carmax is a great place to compare against conventional dealers. They are very close to kbb good condition and at the very least take that offer to the dealer and they will match if not beat it. My two cents, hope it helps.

You trade vehicles way too often. You are trading in a 2013, it is only 2014 so you had it for a year or less. The first year is where you loose the most value.

Here is the deal. 27k trade. I am ordering the vehicle so it won't be here until July. So I get 4 months depreciation for free. I feel I came out ahead. Figure I can get 300-400 out of my bolt ons to boot.
