So I've had my truck for a little over a month now. Due to lack of availability of a manual locally when I was searching, and my wife not being able to drive one, I bought an auto. So far I'm not overly thrilled with the auto transmission.

Recently I noticed a dealer somewhat close had a couple on site so I headed over yesterday for a test drive. I liked it better than mine so I let them run a trade-in estimate. My truck is a 2017 DCSB TRD Offroad 4x4 with P/T and some other do dads, and has just under 1500 miles on it. The truck is excellent condition and had a sticker of just over $40k. The truck I was getting a quote to trade on had a sticker of $37+.

They came back with a trade-in value of $32k for truck, and avsake price of $36+ for the new one. Admittedly, I still owe about $16.5k on mine, and I have never traded in a vehicle that I didn't own outright so I don't know how much pay-off affects trade-in value. Basically, $32k for my truck seemed stupidly low, and them only dropping the price of the manual by $1k wasn't floating my boat so I left.

Long story short, is $32k what I should expect for a trade-in value for this truck with owing what I owe?

Yes I know other potential aftermarket remedies exist such as SSP and OVTune. This post is regarding the trade-in option.

Don’t do it! $32K is a rip-off. In my neck of the woods used tacos sell for around $1K less than a new one and I’ve seen lots of them advertised for more than I paid for mine new.

S mode is not a stick shift mode with out a clutch. It does not shift when you want it to. It limits what gear the truck can shift into is all.

I basically have the same truck. 41k MSRP Paid $36,500. Don’t ever accept such a low number. They are just trying to see where you are at with that number. Negotiate hard and get the truck you want. I must say that I hated the transmission at first too. After 10,000 miles it got a little better through break in. I’d give it more time and then re-examine. Taco’s hold good resale value!

Debt should have nothing to do with trade value.

It's only a number. Figure out a true price for the new one. Figure out a private party price to sell yours.

Then the question becomes is the delta something you are willing to spend for a manual and exclude the wife?

even tacomas lose money after rolling of the car lot. Keep what you have. Your wife can drive it and in time you will be glad you don't have to shift gears all the time in traffic.

Thanks for all the input. I'm not taking that deal. They'll have to get a lot closer to $35k-ish for mine, and a lot closer to $33-34k or less for the manual before I even consider that deal.

The S mode is a bit of a joke. It's also pretty harsh when it shifts. I get the same feeling when using the ECT, shifts don't feel smooth. I feel like my shifts with a manual a much less jolting on passengers as well as on the whole drivetrain.

Have you done a NADA guide price quote on it online? Also have Carmax give you a quote- they will buy it on the spot if you like their quote. They also give you a free inspection and history report with it too (useful for showing any used car buyers if you decide to sell it PP).

That's the main question I was hoping to get answered. Thank you.

Haven't gone to Carfax yet. Still debating if I'll give a bit longer or move on to the manual.

NADA and KBB put my truck at $34-35k for trade-in value. Private sale it's in the $35.5-36.5k range.

I bought a 16 and didn't like it and traded it in with 1000 miles on it. Lost about $2000. It's just money. Go get what you want. Put your boots on tomorrow, go back to work and make more money. Be happy.

Not Carfax- I meant the Carmax dealership. Autocorrect error?

A lot of dealers use NADA - sounds like they wanted to do you twice, taking your trade in and sticking you with another sale! Try Carmax and don't tell them you want to buy another one - then after they hand you a quote, ask them - "you know, do you have any manual 4x4s in your inventory?"

When I traded my 2016 TRd OR 6MT in 4 months and 3,800 miles I “lost” $2150 on the trade in when I got my 17 PRO

I will be trading my 2017 PRO that has 49,000 miles. It will be done by first week of November. So will know what trade in value for it is then

Both trucks I bought from same dealer, at invoice + 300$

The good, bad and the ugly... I've had them taking turns from their salesmen pecking order chase me down the sidewalk after I walked, and others drive my new car to my house after we agreed on just a few hundred over invoice. If one is willing to lowball my trade in that much, they just lowballed themselves out of everything, my future sales and service work, all of it.

If I get serious about trading, I'll probably go through the dealership I purchased the auto from (local to me).

The only reason I even went to the low ballers was to test drive a manual they had. The truck they quoted me won't even be here until Nov. 16th. Manuals are in short supply around Atlanta. Not sure I've ever seen a Quicksand Offroad on anyone's lot in GA, at least not while I was in the market or since. Seems to be an order only trim level.

A truck is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Best wishes on getting more than $32K, considering the notoriety of the 3rd gens.

I couldn't agree more. That goes with anything for sale.

If I decide to sell/trade but can't get what I feel makes sense to me, then I'll keep it with no worries. The OVTune may be a promising route if I keep it.

I'm not sure what your trying to point out here? The Tacoma has always been the leader in the midsize market. I doubt most people do complete enough research, to see some of the complaints to slow down purchasing.

In the PNW they are having lease deals now which I have never seen for a Tacoma 4x4. Of course you can always lease one but now they are actually marketing it. Which means they pry feel the sales are a little slow. Which in turn could also lead the market in sales by the increase in these lease deals.

That being said 32k seems like a good starting offer. 5k below what you paid OTD? 20% is the typical loss off the floor of any normally depreciating value vehicle. So your already in a Better starting spot.
