Right. The only time I did well with a trade in was $5k for my old pathfinder with a transmission issue.

    My strategy is always this:
Go into the dealer like idk anything about cars and I'm only browsing. I get the salesman licking his chops by telling them my ideal monthly payment, I'm going to use their financing, and get them thinking that I'm a sucker to pay MSRP and all the extras. They give me the appraisal for my trade in but I haggle about the price of the appraisal. "I was expecting more.. thats ok, I'll go check out other dealers". They never let me leave and will increase the appraisal. Then I go to their finance guy and start to negotiate the MSRP "I asked other dealers and they do XX price. Can you do better if I use your financing?". They run my credit to which I inform them that they have to do better on the rate because I'm preapproved through my credit union at 2.5%. I haggle all the way and I'm always ready to leave if I don't feel comfortable. I HATE salesmen, but I love the numbers game because I'm an expert of numbers. I'm known to get angry and leave if they insult my intelligence by thinking they can play numbers against me

This. I am worried about paying full price because maybe in 1 year I will lose 10k+ in depreciation. It's kind of hard to see where the market will go, but judging that the KBB is dropping on the Tacoma, I can only assume that it will for RAM's.

I just traded in my 19 Jeep for the Taco last week. Got 37. At 7.25% tax where I live, thats roughly 2700. Essentially 39700 value. So I would have had to list privately at 41ish, and after negotiation get to 39700 to break even with dealer offer. I compared cargurus, auto trader, etc to see what dealers were selling a 19 Jeep for and it was around 42. Private sales around 40. IMO, its not worth the time and effort to sell privately if the dealer offer plus tax savings ends up being the same to you. Plus, I took off all aftermarket stuff and went back stock before trading,so I sell that stuff myself, hopefully recooping 2k or so. Yes, the dealer will turn around and sell it for at least 40-41, making a profit. But so what? As long as I get mine, what difference does it make to me?
In the end, 37 for trade, negotiated to 500 under MSRP for Taco 39500, tax (minimal), title, license, docs....wrote a check for just over 3k and drove off the lot with a brand new truck with no note. The point is that MAYBE I would have ended up with like 500-1k more if selling private, but it definitely wouldnt be as easy.

Just enter the info into Carvana and Vroom. You'll get an instant offer so you'll know what the minimum amount you can get is. You can also use Carmax or Autotrader, but that requires going their and getting it inspected.

I prefer trade in if the deal isn’t completely lopsided in the dealers favor. The numbers matter.

That sounds like a good deal! I had a feeling that there's discounts on new RAMs because of the gas prices. If I could get like 37-38k trade in, and more than 10% off a new ram 1500 crew cab big horn with level 2 package then I'm all for it. I hate to see my Tacoma go.. but I'm looking at buying a bigger boat at 6000lbs. Already the Tacoma wasn't happy towing 4000lbs in the mountains so I don't want to know what 6000lbs is like.
