What are dealers giving for trade-ins? Was it close to the bluebook trade in values on online? Im using this information to decided between lease or pay cash.

    If you could please share:
    -Model year
    -price paid
    -trade in Value
    -mileage at trade in

I wouldn't trust what anyone says what they got for a trade without knowing what they paid for the new vehicle. Sometimes dealers give full KBB and then ask for retail price on trade.

Or they give 80% KBB and take 20% off trade.

Best advice, use KBB as a starting point for negotiations.

sold mine to toyota yesterday. Trade in kbb for excellent was 27800. They gave me 27 and i didn't buy a car from them. I Just needed to get out from under it and don't deal with craigslist. Had some pretty bad experiences with craigslist. It was a 2013 dcsb 4x4 with some scratches and a few small dents. It all depends on location I'm sure.

I paid 23,000 for my 08 SR5 AC 2.7 5spd. The local dealer gave me 17,000 with 58,000 miles on it when I bought my 2014. I saw the 2008 on their website for 22,500 and it sold within 3 days. Gotta love Tacoma resale value. I should have sold the truck to a private party. Oh well.

I paid $23,350 for 2009 TRD OR Prerunner. I traded it at 4 years 1 month with 87k on odo and got $18,500. I probably could have pushed for another 500 and got it but with the tax break it was real close to what I would have sold for. Other than a bad door ding and nasty looking bed it was in real good shape. I had Duratracs with 35k on them and they were about half worn. Dealer looked at Black Book and NADA along with recent sales.

Not to bad. Going in I knew I wasn't going to get that much base on KBB's trade in values. I could've of shopped around but there was only one dealership that was bringing the Pros in(there's only a total of 3 Toyota dealership on the island).

The best way to maximize your hard earned money is to do a private sale then shop with cash in pocket. The money you might have to spend renting an economy car for a week while you shop is nothing compared to How much you will save.

If you've got a carmax nearby it might be worth your while to stop by and have them make you an offer. They'll do an assessment then give you a written offer thats good for 7 days. Theres no obligation to sell. At that point you'll at least have a concrete offer you can compare to dealer offers.

My experience when I went through carmax was that the offer was on par with the KBB value for a dealer trade-in. It was a couple years ago so I don't remember the exact numbers.

Sometimes, as posted earlier, in some states, the trade value is subtracted from the invoice, and sales tax is only paid on the balance. If you sell privately, sales tax is paid on the full invoice amount and your cash in pocket (from your private sale) is just that. Sometimes a reduced "trade" offer more than offsets selling for cash unless the private sale amount is significantly greater than the trade offer. In a 7% sales tax state, a $10K trade offer will save you 700.00 in sales taxes. In order to break even, you would need to privately sell your vehicle for $10,700 (7% greater that the trade offer) and put the full amount of the sale price down as a cash payment. You may negotiate a better sale price when shopping with cash, but, not always on popular models. (renting a car for a week could eat up any savings pretty fast)

I've always resisted trade-ins until recently, for the reason you detailed here.

I used to live in a densely populated area where there was a good market for private used sales. I used to be able to "hold out" for a premium price because of the way I cared for my vehicles. Traditionally, I'd make much more on the private sale than I would on the reduced value of the trade + tax benefit.

I've experienced a much drier market for private sales since I moved to a rural area and there's very little benefit for the premium care I've put in to my vehicles. I did two trades recently - once when buying my 4Runner last year (new) and again when buying my Tacoma this year (used). My latest trade was a 2006 Honda - KBB told me I should be able to get 9000 private sale based upon condition. I think I got two emails about it in the 6 months I had it posted on Craigslist. Coincidentally, the last one came the day I was at the dealer.

After I negotiated what I thought was a fair sales price on the Tacoma, I negotiated my trade-in up from $6000 to $8000. That gave me about $500 in tax benefit, and I didn't have to wait and hope for a private sale.

Honestly, though, with the Tacoma - I don't think you can lose on a private sale in any market with these. So if and when the time comes, I don't think I'd trade my Tacoma in, I think I'd still stand a chance for a much better deal than trade-in.

When I purchased my Tacoma I was going to trade in a non Toyota vehicle, dealer offered $4,500 for the trade in. I kept the vehicle, purchased the Tacoma, then sold the other vehicle $11,500.

Seems like they are giving close to kbb which is good. :)

I know these tacomas hold there value well, but i was concerned they would be giving 1/2 of kbb like they do on lots of other vehicles.

Tried to trade in my Wife's Kia forte at one dealership. he said 1/4 of KBB value. I laughed, but best we did was 1/2. Kias are garbage and we all know it. Why my wife bought that thing I'll never know. I will also never let her buy another car without me looking at it first.
