Trade my 2016 for a 2023? Am I dumb?

Been jonesing hard for a new vehicle, but there is nothing out there I would want as a daily over the 3rd gen (Not digging the 4th gen so far). I have white 2016 TRD Sport Access Cab that has less than 90k on it. Other than a few minor warranty repairs, it has been rock solid and probably will still be in another 10 years. It was rear ended pretty bad, but repaired very well.

There have been a few quality of life improvements and features added since 2016, but I don't think I am really missing out. The only thing I hate about it is the chrome grill, but I have a black pro grill sitting in my garage for years. I'm much better off getting it detailed and wrapped and telling myself its a new car, right?

Also, to cement my stupidity in my opening post, if I were to wrap my taco, thoughts on emerald green metallic? This is my inspiration, I should have bought it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBjcD_OhTVw (Yes, I would green out the interior too.)

I've got a 17 and have thought a lot about a 23.... decided to keep the 17 because there's nothing wrong with it and everything else I'd want I can or have already added (like CarPlay). I'd say stick with the devil you know unless you're really looking to change it up and get a double cab or a stick shifter or something

I love the access cab and too lazy to drive stick. I'd buy exactly what I have except in the lime green just to be obnoxious. I keep jumping back and forth between your logical conclusion and doing the dumb thing for instant gratification.

A great wrap will cost at least 2/3 a good paint job.

And your white will eventually fail, and right now Toyota doesn't care about that on Tacomas.

Side note. Why kill electrons to complain about a grill you must be too lazy to change, since you have the solution in your garage? o_O

Well if you don't like 4th Gen and you want another Tacoma, get it now while your 16 still has high resell value. Yes you could hold it for another 10 years but then what do you get? Get a 23 and keep it 20 years!

What model would you get though?

I find it more rewarding to keep a vehicle as long as it makes financial sense. If I were you, I’d pay for a good detailing. That can really help spark that new truck feeling without the new truck payment.

I replaced my 2007 Corolla because I had moved to AZ for all of the off-road/rural driving. Else I would have driven it until it exceeded a certain amount ($1000? $2000?) per year to maintain it.

But I am an old man and I prefer dollars over bling.

keep the truck you have. youd be paying big money for basically the same truck. you can swap a few parts like radio, grill, tail lights and have basically the same truck. your truck actually has a few better features like the extra in bed storage and non power seat.

They got rid of the in bed storage boxes? I've had so many good ropes and straps stolen out mine.

Eh. My opinion. If you were going to get a different model like a Offroad or TRD Pro or a DCLB instead of Access Cab, I would say do it. But really what are you doing:
    1. Giving up a Tacoma Sport Access Cab with at least another 110k miles in her
    2. Giving up known reliability
    3. Giving up something that is paid for!
    4. Getting really nothing new except some minor upgrades since then like Apple Car Play and LED headlights
I think you will be itching soon afterwards if you do it. Instead do some upgrades to your current ride to make it feel new.

    Leather seat covers?
    LED Headlights maybe?
    A stereo upgrade?
    Wrap like you said?

    Etc.

Well there is only one AC in green showing up on CarGurus and they want $1,200 over MSRP for it. If you went Lunar Rock there are several $1,500 below MSRP on the market.

Get a 2023, it's the last of the best old school Tacomas.

I kinda love it, but 4WD is a waste of money for my use case.

    ^I concur.

IMHO, Save the money and just do some minor upgrades. WAY cheaper than getting a new truck in this economy. $50k for a new Tacoma?! Forget about it.

I vote to update. I traded my 2020 SR5 2WD AT for a 2023 OR 4x4 MT. Mid year, the trade-in values were off-the-charts, so I was able to get $30k for my 2020. I always wanted a manual so that’s what I got.

Starting with the 2020, Tacomas have slightly thicker front side window glass to cut down on wind noise. Other than that, there are very little differences. May or may not be worth it depending on your situation.

If you can, go to a dealer who participates in the Toyota Smart Path plan. I had no haggling and hassles and got mine for $100 under MSRP. But I had to drive out 200 miles to a participating dealer who had a MT.

The 2023 is going to be more refined and, theoretically, a bit more reliable than the 2016 simply because of the 2016 being a first model year. I don't blame you on the 2024 for that exact reason.

The 2023 will have TSS standard, although personally I like not having it. Someone already mentioned the removal of the large storage cubby in the bed. The 2023 is also 7 years newer and, Toyota or not, age starts showing on various components eventually. You could prolong that with something newer if you wanted. Although if you said 4x4 isn't worth the money to you, I'd assume you live somewhere rust isn't much of an issue.

Then there's the flip side of it. You already know your 2016 while you don't know the new truck. You could end up with some niche factory defect and, while you'd have a new warranty, you'd still have to deal with that.

Really, it's up to you. Personally, if I'm getting a new truck I'm probably getting something different like a different generation/configuration or a different/larger truck. I love the 3rd gen, but what I mean is I don't see the point in going from one 3rd gen to the exact same 3rd gen. Especially if it means resetting the payment clock.
