Trade my 2016 for a 2023? Am I dumb?

Buy the 2023 and keep 'em both.... best of both worlds.
Otherwise you'll be buying some used 2023 years later and wondering if it was abused.
Or worse, you'll be buying an unproven 4th Gen.

    Trade up.
I sold my 2008 a year ago when I got my 2022 access cab.
No regrets. You will be glad you did.
Also, the access cab will be even more of a unicorn in the future.

I sold my 2017 SR DCSB to Carvana back in April. They made me an offer that I absolutely couldn't refuse. For $5K more, I bought a brand new 2023 SR5. Check your trucks value on Carvana for the heck of it. I have to say, the 2023 is definitely more refined than my 2017. Carvana gave me $8K more than the dealer offered me while I was getting the truck serviced.

    I recently traded in my 2013 on a 2022,
thought it would bother me more then it did mostly for giving up my manual for an automatic.
But, not the case, in my case it was a good choice. Not sure what ur truck is worth but it a high resell time for tacoma right now, so it may be worth it just for that reason. May equal out to driving for years for very little money as it did in my case. I got so much for my 2013 it was hard not to do.

(Also it didn't let me select trim and defaulted to SR5.)

Looks like things really are settling down a bit in the used car market.

    How old are you?

I bought a '23 last year at 60 for cash. I intend for it to be the last vehicle I buy. In my old age I don't intend to deal with a car payment or an unreliable vehicle.

I would take a new 3rd gen '23 before I would take the plunge on a 1st year vehicle of any make. There are always growing pains with new models or generational updates. You'd be going from your current issue-free truck (no leaks, no gasket failures, no rattles, "yada yada yada") to "TSB's", "Service campaigns", maybe even recalls. You'll go from happy owner to aggravated owner driving a Yaris loaner, while his $54,000 truck is in the dealer's shop, on a lift, waiting for the parts, dome light on: down by the river.

Don't do it. Put on the black heritage Pro grille. It will make you smile. (Leave off the Ford marker lamps) :pccoffee:

I have never understood replacing a Tacoma with the same Tacoma unless you're looking for a different cab/bed configuration or didn't have 4x4. Otherwise, no.

I went from a 2012 to a 2021. The only feature would really miss if I went back to a ‘12 is the LED headlights. I’d make that upgrade to your 17 and call it a day. We are still at least 10 years away from being at a point where you can’t find good 3rd gens on the used market.

Send it man. Life is too short to not do what you want. I traded my 2017 off road in during the height of the market and got a 2021 TRD Pro and I’ve haven’t looked back. Loved my 2017 but said what the hell and during that time I got exactly what I paid for it on trade in, so couldn’t pass it up.

Go for it I did my 16 was bad ass Super Clean. 23 is all that and more I like new toys. However I will keep this collector piece AlwayS. Matter of fact I think I'll max out the miles on this PrO. No 4Bangers for me. Well maybe a 22RE

I was in similar place as you I ended selling my Black 18 SR utility 4 cylinder for a 23 MGM SR V6 and happy with the small upgrades. black was hard to maintain as I had no garage. Thats was one of the biggest reasons I sold

We'll see for how long with the UAW strike. Even though it doesn't directly affect Toyota, it will still affect them and the used market as a whole.

A 4banger belongs in hatchback, not a pickup. I will die on that hill.

With the still incredible prices you get for clean used cars and trucks, and the fact that you don’t like the next generation, it’s at least worth seriously considering a change. I have had fantastic luck with my Hondas and Toyotas, but after the first hundred thousand miles, things start to wear out. I’ve pushed several of my cars to nearly at or over 300,000 miles, but I no longer have much interest in lying in a pool of melting snow as I replace a frozen brake caliper or wheel bearing. Nothing wrong with keeping an older car on the road. Nothing wrong with driving something new every 5 years or so either. I happily fork out several hundred dollars per month to drastically reduce my chances of unexpected maintenance.

I got nothing but praise and respect for the 22R 4 banger that was in the Hilux I drove during my Navy days. That truck took me up and down the east coast multiple times for 10 years and was a faithful friend!

Just hit 85k on my 16 Tundra and feels like brand new ! Did just put new shocks/shackles/brakes/rotors and new front/rear diff oil, transfer case and transmission fluids, all in the last 5-10k miles. Would look at new but the interest rates are too high imo as well as the new asking prices.

I think it really depends on how you use the truck. Where I live, the highest hill is 20' high with a 9 degree slope, and the deepest water I'll go through is maybe 2' on a high tide. 99% of my driving is city and I have nothing to tow. My '17 SR was a price point truck, and I bought it because its simplicity (manual A/C controls, etc.). The beauty of the 2.7L is that it's still manufactured in Japan. That's precisely why I bought my '23 with the 2.7L. I actually came across a configuration that I never knew existed. Essentially, SR5 trim with the 2.7L, steel wheels and manual A/C controls. It's exactly what I wanted. I'm not 100% trilled with the TSS because it adds complexity, but I don't believe you can get a Tacoma without it.
