Trade taco for 4 runner before redesign? (Due to 4.0engine)

I got a 2022 tacoma trd off road. It has almost 17k mile on it.
I am wondering if I should trade it for the 4 runner before they redesign due to 4 runner having 4.0 engine.
Will the 4 runner outlast tacomas because of their 4.0 engine?
I also rarely use the bed of the truck. But I love the tacoma.
the only reason for trading would be the reliability of the 4 runner 4.0 engine compared to Tacoma’s 3.5

Toyota sells twice as much of tacomas each year then 4runners each year so your bound to hear and see more problems . Its up to you though, down payment and year of payments down the drain or start all over. Every forum you go to each car or truck has problems or failures like Ford, Chrysler, Gm etc etc

I did just the opposite.I went from a 2020 4Runner SR5 to a 2021 Tacoma. One of the major dislikes for me on the 4Runner was keeping the rear window clean during rain and the snow season. I was very impressed originally with the 4Runner but longed for the functionality of the pick up. I could not stand the bike rack bouncing around on the back of the 4Runner during a long trip to St Louis while on the Tacoma they ride in the bed. Just my personal likes and dislikes. If you do not use the bed on the truck you will really enjoy the 4Runner. I like both vehicles and the Tacoma mileage is about 4 mpg better than the 4Runner for me.

If it really worries you that much spend a bit of money and get yourself a Toyota/TFS extended warranty. There are several sources listed here in TW where you can buy one at a deep discount vs what your dealer wants for it. It will be cheaper than the hit you take trading for a 4Runner after a year. Also, don't make the assumption that the Tacoma 3.5L is unreliable based on what you read here. This forum is not representative of the typical Tacoma or Tacoma owner.

We have both. The 4Runner is very reliable. The only issue we've really had likely stemmed from the battery going bad.

The Tacoma has had some major work done, all under warranty. But, it's also one of the earliest iterations of the 3rd gen and we use it over 2x as much as the 4Runner. We've had them both about the same amount of time with the 4Runner being owned by us for about 4 months longer. In that time we've put 40k on the 4Runner and 90k on the Tacoma. The 4Runner was bought new and the Tacoma was used.

Wow. I would say if you're that obsessed with the 4.0 engine, then yes you should trade. I hope you two have a wonderful life together.

Minivan motors like the 3.5-alive are at least twice as durable as truck motors. They are built much stronger to handle the rigours and neglect of minivan use. Truck motors like the 4.slow are built much weaker as they know they’ll get regular maintenance.

I have both. The 4Runner feels like a tank next to the sportier Tacoma. I like both and feel that both are going to last longer than I want to look at them. Choosing a totally different vehicle because of the 4.0 vs the 3.5 is dumb. The reason you should be choosing one over the other is interior space vs bed. That’s where the difference is.

Just do a turbo on the Tacoma if you need m ore zip. With the stuff that ends up in my 6ft bed a 4 Runner would never work for me. Wife has a Forrester AWD, guess I'm set.

If you you don’t really need a pickup, take the 4R for the add’l rear seat space. They both represent the Toyota brand very well, so I wouldn’t venture too deeply into the made in Japan vs North America debate, unless your hobby is measuring paint thickness…Bagging Tacoma quality is frequently a sport that makes some 4R owners feel better about their purchase. Fact is, both are really good, really reliable. Taco is designed to sell certain trims at a lower price point so you may find some materials or fits that reflect that, in a direct comparison.

The 4.0, and more specifically the version found in the 2010-current 4Runner, is undeniably one of the best engines that Toyota ever made, so you really can’t go wrong either way.

Good luck, just promise that if you do go w the 4Runner, you don’t lecture us on your “superior” made in Tahara quality

I have both. A 2016 ORP 4Runner and a 23 Tacoma TRD Pro. I need the tacoma to do truck stuff. The 4Runner for SUV stuff and the 4Runner is just a bit more sturdy than the Tacoma. I like how much more comfortable the seats are in the 4Runner. I feel with regular maintenance you won’t go wrong with either.

    Both very reliable and nice.
My GF has a 2017 4R, and likes to drive my Tacoma more. While I like the 4R, and it runs just fine, I don’t get all the love for the 4.0. Yeah it’s fine, just different, to me.

As mentioned above, changing for the motor alone is silly. You want/need an SUV or a truck,,, only you can answer.

In the end, since you’re already shopping new vehicles when you just got a 2022, I imagine you’re one that’s enamored by a new and different vehicle every year or two, so might as well get to it. (Not intended as a put down, I used to also)

And basis do you have for this statement? The loaded hours for a "truck" engine are quite different than an engine strictly designed for a minivan or sedan - therefore, the converse is true. A lot of manufactures use the same engine (or similar engine with minor tune changes) across multiple vehicles for the sake of logistics - for example the 5.7L Hemi in FCA products. Does having a 5.7L Hemi in a Charger or Challenger now make it a car engine? Hardly.

I absolutely love my Mexican born Taco. It’s been flawless, ‘cept for…

    Click from suspension.
    Damn noises from the dash.
    Squeeky damn 4x4 knob.

    “…but they all do that.”

    PS…I “hate” red caps.
