Minivan engines have to meet various MIL spec and NATO regulations as they are basically used in battle. Truck motors, because they produce much more low-end torque, are made of lightweight materials as they don’t lug like a minivan engine is expected to. Toyota experimented with putting the 4.0L in the Previa and it was a total fail. The Previa mules with the 4.Slow Engine blew up after 10K, so they put the 3.5L in the Sienna for its extra strength.

    We have both.
I need a bed to haul various things. We take the 4R on road trips because of the increased enclosed area.
They do drive different. I feel like the 4R is much more comfortable on long drives as well.
    Mileage isn't much different.
We are glad to have both for different reasons.

I'd go test drive a 4runner. After having a taco for 4 years and changing over its drastically more comfortable and the no more gear hunting or continual downshifting on the interstate.

If I had no need for a truck, I’d prefer the 4Runner.
