Really want to get back in a mid-size (while i still don't have kids) so i can fit on the trails again. This was my first full size truck, thought i was really going to enjoy all the extra space, ended up not really needing it.

I've only driven a 2017 for 15-20min but it reminded me a lot of being back in my JKU before 37s. Really would like to try out the 2020 to see if the new seat makes much of a difference.

What do you miss most from your FX4?

Well for starters I miss the powertrain. 3.5 ecoboost has plenty of power and the trans is smooth and gear was great. I actually miss the size. Only time I really go off-road is taking paths back to places I shoot at and what not. Not hitting off-road trails or anything that requires a smaller body. Road trips were a lot more comfortable/smooth in the F150. Gas mileage was close to the same. I get a little better with the taco but with the size/weight and power difference I feel it should be a lot higher in the taco. I don’t get the mpg that some people here claim. I get around 18 average and that’s easy in the throttle driving it like an old man mostly. My F150 I would get on a lot more. Just loaded hearing the turbos spool you a little and I averaged about 17 doing shorter trips around town vs a lot more highway driving now in the Tacoma because since have started a new job.

I really enjoyed my 1st gen taco. This gen is mediocre in my opinion. It’s not the worst vehicle I ever owned but overall I don’t really care for how it drives. The payment is probably the best thing about the truck. I think next summer/fall I’ll but the bullet and get something else.

Go test drive one or see if you can take one home for the night. That way you have plenty of time to see how you like them.

Curious how much cash you’re looking for?

I have a 2017 DCSB TRDOR with every option including JBL. 34.5K miles.

ARE overlander Cap, OEM Roofrack and softtopper if you prefer that.

I really appreciate the feedback & am definitely going to get an overnight from the local dealership. My biggest concerns moving to the taco are ride comfort, gear hunting, & lack of power (daily drove a JKU on 37s/5.13 for a few years and i'll never do that again!). Is your rig pretty close to stock?

Yea just a few cosmetic mods, and I added some heated seats, remote start and put some bigger tires on.

Did the taco always lack power for you or was it the hit from bigger tires ?

Always. Didn’t feel much difference changing the tires. Not even with mpg. The taco will move but you really have to be on the gas. I just hate having the thing screaming trying to pass someone and I’m barely moving for a while. Reminds me a lot of my old Jeep. It would rev to around 4500-5k and feel like it wasn’t moving then it would finally start to get going. Except I feel the taco is a little louder. Obviously there are people who don’t mind it, but I do. I shouldn’t have to mash the pedal to pass a old lady in a Buick doing 8 under the limit, or try to get around a Civic from the start at a light.

A lot of people say to get the OV tune and that will make the truck a lot more enjoyable. My thoughts are it should be that way from the factory. I don’t feel like dropping $800 or whatever on a tune in a truck that I don’t plan to keep much longer. If it wasn’t for the fact of me having started a new job a little after buying it I would of already have got out of the truck.

    Where you want to be
I'm in the same boat.. I love my Taco, but there is MUCH to be desired when it comes to power (especially at the price range these trucks are going for). I threw a lot of $$ for added performance but feel the return is ho-hum.. I'm considering selling the Taco and getting into another truck.
