All of the cars I've used cruise control on shift down a lot with cruise control on, you go up a slight incline, it shifts down, you go up a big hill and they shift down 2or 3 gears. Nothing that's a trucks going to get good mpgs going 90 anyways. Just saying. But your making the payments, so if you want something different get what you want.

This is going up a 4% grade with no wind and cruise set .
Dealer says it's a normal condition btw.
It was low on trans fluid from the factory in this clip , but it still acts exactly the same now

Built for maximum low end torque, tooter II.VII intake manifold spacer, LCE long tube header, Injen long tube intake, 2,900 rpm torque peak.
I modified my 2.7 to hit its torque peak at only 2,800 rpms. Horsepower is how fast you can accelerate. Torque is what pulls trailers.

The part that sucks about this, is that I NEED to get a Tacoma for my business, but that shit ^^^^ is unacceptable.

Its because their disappointed with Toyota and this is the best place to express that in hopes that Toyota is listening. I wish more people did this and agree with the OP that the new motor/tranny sucks period. It was a big mistake and has taken the Tacoma in a wrong direction. We all hope they are going to listen and improve this in the coming Taco's.

Exactly. Toyota chose to put a weaker version of a car/light SUV motor into a pick-up truck designed to tow 6,500lbs and lead its segment in off road capability. Glad we're on the same page.

You realize most of the F-150 all run 3.5 L (besides the 5.0) engines with turbos to achieve their power from such a small displacement. The 3.5 is a good engine if you know how to drive it... The engine runs on the atkinson cycle when not under load which means it leaves the valves open longer on the up travel so the compression are lower re-leaving the lost of power and use of more fuel. You have to realize that these are smaller displacement engines and that are designed to rev. Now combined with a 6 speeds it tames the crazy revs between gears. Its not working harder doing the basic truck stuff... its working the way its designed to do just the driver isn't use to the engine's way of doing the work.

I don't think too many are going to agree with you. But you've hit the nail on the head. It's just not economical to put full R&D $$ into a complete drivetrain setup for each model in a manufacturers lineup.

I'm going to find a used one to test drive. Maybe they get better after they break in for a while.

The three brand new ones that I tested were undriveable. On the first one, I actually got out and popped the hood to make sure they didn't mistakenly put a 4 banger in there.

Toyota didn't fuck anything up. If the 3rd gen is not for you it's just not for you. I towed from so cal to Cheyenne Wyoming and no problems. I love the new power. What I can't stand is people talking shit who have never driven them. And yes there were hundreds of people complaining about the 2nd gen especially those with the manual. I had my transmission replaced twice bc of it not shifting into 1 3 5. Then another one for grinding issues.
    Go drive it!
Mine lifted on 33's would smash most stock trucks

I've driven a handful, and I really want one, and I absolutely love the styling, but the lack of torque is holding me back.

The way that the transmission has to shift if you even breathe on the gas pedal is a turn off. Maybe it would get better as the truck learned my driving habits, and after it broke in, but that would be taking a big chance, because what if it didn't?

Not having a '16 is putting me behind on new product development. I even have my color and wheels picked out, and I even hashed out a deal with my dealer. It's just that lack of torque....

But it's the same amount of torque...as...nevermind.

It's the RPM range where the torque is....that's the problem. The engine has no "tractability".

I use cruise control on long drives sometimes and if there is a grade it will shift, almost every car does. If I know there will be ups and downs I just drive it myself and it doesn't do that. I'm sure I can find some hills and make my truck act a little weird but it's doing all this shenanigans bc it has 6 gears. I'm
Driving with 33's and at 6200' and it drives fine. Before I bought my truck I had never been on this forum and I test drove it a few times. I loved it, especially bc it was different. The low end was different then my 05' but the top end is ridiculous. I bought this truck to use it what it was made for and every guy I've met loves it. It's definitely not made for hauling 24/7 but it will handle it no problem.
