Just traded my TRD Off Road yesterday for a '16 Tundra SR5 TRD Off Road Double Cab 6.5 bed.
Last week, I took the Taco up in to Bueno Vista, Cottonwood Pass area and the 3.5 was totally under powered in the mountains. I was towing a Springdale mini, single axel, at 4200 lbs dry, which is about 60% of the 6500 that the Taco is rated for. Coming south out of Bueno Vista there was a slight grade and the 6 speed wanted to run in second gear and 5K rpms to make the grade. Honesty felt like I was abusing the Tacoma, not a good feeling.
I did get the Taco off road in the national forest above Cottonwood lake and the OR is freaking amazing. There were a couple worked jeeps that had to take look twice at the stock Tacoma out and about.
I really miss the Taco but at the elevations here, I just don't think the 3.5 is cut out to tow 4K without some abuse to power train.
I have kept my eyes out ever since I took possession of the truck in march and saw a Gen 3 towing a double axel, slide, probably 25 feet headed west to the mountains, (Oklahoma plated) and I cannot imagine the awaking that guy was in for.
Maybe I got a weak Taco but I don't think so because the quality of Toyota.

For the Tundra....well it is a full size truck with a V-8. The shocking thing so far, the MPG is not that far off the Tacoma. The best monthly MPG for the Taco, as indicated by the fuel app, was 21 mpg. The Tundra, as indicated by the display, is hovering under 19 mpg. 2 mpg for running around the county is pretty respectable I'd say for a vehicle with 125 miles on it.

You guys/forum provide some remarkable insight and are a great source for info. Best of luck to everyone.

Yeah I traded my 16 tacoma in for a 16 tundra after the first time I towed a trailer also. My mileage in the tundra isn't as bad as I thought it would be either I'm getting 17-18 mpgs. The odd thing is i kinda miss my tacoma lol

Why are you posting this here? Go post on a Tundra forum

You are posting this here for one of several reasons:
    1. You need to justify your trade
    2. You feel bad about it and want other people to agree with you so you can justify your trade.
    3. You want to make us feel bad for keeping our inferior product.

    Good bye

Just curious, since you traded it in. How much did they give you for your taco?

I thought this was good info, might make some think before dropping 35-40k + on a vehicle they are wanting to use for towing in hilly areas.

I've never considered a Taco a good towing platform on anything bigger than a jetski, you never see them advertised for their towing capacity like you do with the full sized trucks. It's marketed more as a sport truck with great offroad capabilities.

If I were looking to tow through the mountains regularly I'd get a Tundra too.

Glad to hear the OP found the right truck for his needs instead of complaining about the Tacos limitations when a different truck is more suited to what he wants to do. Tacos are great trucks on their own but they aren't the right truck for everything.

Did it ever occur to you to look at the Tundra before buying the Taco?
I knew I didn’t need a full size hard to maneuver gas guzzler because I had 2 previously, but I still had the salesman pull me a white Tundra also at the time of purchase for a last minute reassessment.
I chose the Taco because of my everyday needs, not towing, although I did get professional towing advice and watched videos which btw contradict what you’re saying for the occasional 24’ boat towing, no complaints so far.
But full disclosure, flat ground with overpass & bridges.
Moreover, If I was you, I would have considered the GMC until Toyota gets off its A$$ and gives the GMC a run for the gas guzzler award.
    Enjoy your T-
    Cheers!

Yes the 3.5 the biggest piece of shit. 3rd gens are horrible. Toyota quality down hill.

Threads like this make me not want to visit the 3rd gen forum. You people bitch so much, can't be grateful to have such a nice truck that most people can't afford world wide.

I dont believe anyone said the 3RD gen is a POS.The OP said it wasn't suited for that type of towing. They are great light duty trucks. As for towing machines not so much,

Glad the OP got the truck he needed.

These threads are good for non-thin skinned people who are doing research. I always laugh when people reply simply complaining about someone they perceive is complaining about the truck they own.

Damn, another butt-hurt, angry and miserable (possibly jealous?) Tacoma fan-boy who can't stand to hear that his poor little Tacoma just isn't the best choice for all situations. I still don't understand why you guys get so bent out of shape when someone here doesn't agree with your choices or your way of thinking. No need to throw an internet temper tantrum just because OP doesn't see things your way.

OP posted a pretty sensible thread just stating his experience. He wasn't an asshole, didn't make childish remarks and didn't trash the Tacoma, he just said for his needs and what he wants out of a truck just wasn't there in the Tacoma. Maybe he did/or didn't do enough research before buying the Tacoma? Who knows, and who cares. He came here to relate his experience and maybe this will be helpful to others who may be on the fence about both trucks. To each his own. You guys who get your panties all ruffled when someone doesn't agree with you, even if they're being civil about it need to chill out.

This is all kind of funny to me. I actually came from a 2009 CrewMax Tundra with the 5.7L. I loved that truck. I put over 100,000 on it and traded it in on the Tacoma since I hardly ever tow anymore and wanted something a little smaller to fit in the garage and easier to manage off-road.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably just go for another Tundra. The thing was rock solid. Or just kept my old truck. But for now the Tacoma works just fine despite the squeaking bushings and odd feeling trans/engine combo coming from the Tundra anyway. Haven't driven any previous gen Tacoma's before. Just my '04 Tundra that was like a crossover between the two.

I did tow around 9,500 lbs or so with the Tundra and it did pretty well in my opinion. It was an enclosed cab M series Kubota tractor on a double axle trailer with brake controller. Also pulled it with my dads Sierra (2014 5.3L) once and the Tundra felt stronger to me. But I don't do that anymore and can't say I've even pulled anything with the Taco thus far.

I should also mention that it was leveled, had a big ol grill guard, MangaFlow exhaust system and averaged about 14MPG, lol. It would get up to 17 on the highway though, which is about the same as the Tacoma since it can't stay in overdrive.

I wonder if the op had the TSB done for the transmission before he got rid of it. Seems like everyone noticed an improvement after the TSB so far.

I'm also curious to see how the tacoma tows after the TSB has been performed.

Good luck with the tundra op.
