I bought a 2016 Tacoma Access Cab and I VERY MUCH regret it. Toyota has treated me poorly as well. Dealer is nice but they are controlled by Toyota.

Who has not acted in good faith to repair my truck. TOTOTA SAYS IT HAS 89 db's of noise in the cab. I measured higher and am getting it professionally done.

I cannot drive or sell a truck with at least 89 db of noise in the cab.

...^^^... I have never checked the dbs in my cab.

I have tinnitus and loud and certain pitch noises make me nuts ... my Tacoma is ok with minimal outside to inside noise and I have the extra door opening space with access cab too.

IMO ... I would do the db tests and take them to Toyota and see what they say.

In all my years buying many Toyota products, I have never found them unreasonably so far.

    Good luck with you problem.

Yeah every 2016 Tacoma I have been in has been remarkably quiet. Quiet as a Lexus? No, but it is a pickup.

New Canyon owner here.....a whopping 1600 miles on it. My former truck - was a 2007 and I owned it since new.

I'll never bash either truck and I won't recommended either - as it all depends on YOU - and what you want out of the truck. The reasons why I did not buy a 2016 Tacoma - was more because of options.
I have a Canyon Crew Cab SLT which is their top of the line option (similar to Limited). Things the Canyon has that the Tacoma Limited doesn't?? Power seats & lumbar, Black Leather seats and all black interior, Remote Start, Heated mirrors... Apple CarPlay (which, I haven't used it much).....and not to forget, rear Disc brakes, AUTO 4WD, Rear Locking Diff (this is NOT the same as the E-locker. It's more like a mechanical Limited locking device. It actually does LOCK the wheels but engages the parts via centrifugal force. Once that force is missing - you're not locked).

Love the remote start..... The interior is very quiet. No more loud noises when big rain drops hit the roof (I hated that in the 2007 Tacoma). I don't know the official weight of the Canyon, but it feels heavier./bigger. When the roads are slightly wet, I don't get tire spin like I did in the Tacoma - but then again, I'll put it in Auto4WD and the front wheels kick in (you can feel it). The seats are a bit on the 'firm' side, but I've accepted this as a good thing for my old and achy back. Seats are softening up as I sit in them.

The Radio, Nav, Voice, CarPlay........is a bit clunky and not necessarily user friendly. I'm still trying to learn it. However - I love the fact that I can 'voice' to Siri to send a text message without touching the phone or the screen.

The truck has its share of complaints and issues from owners - much like the 2016 Tacoma. One of the biggest complaints - is the transmission shifting. Sound familiar? I don't know if it's a transmission thing or a combination of several things. I've noticed - when you slow down and then, get back on the gas again - the truck stutters & hiccups. You have to step on the gas harder - like it hasn't downshifted and there's not enough rpm's (or fuel).

Yes - I realize I'm taking a chance with reliability and resale. But then again, Toyota quality isn't as good as it used to be either. This Canyon has 3 years to impress me - or else, I won't hesitate to get rid of it. If Toyota would've had all the bells & whistles - there would've been no question.

I'm enjoying it and that's all that matter.

To the OP - ultimately, it's a decision you have to make. If you're not happy with the Canyon/Colorado - you have to decide WHAT doesn't make you happy? And.....will the Tacoma be able to fit your needs/happiness? Only you will know...... And only you know if you can afford to move forward to something else.

Nice honest assessment. You sound too smart to be on this forum! I mean, you gave an intelligent, thought out response without insulting someone or being a dick. Well done!

I think all the Tacoma trim levels have heated mirrors. I know my '16 TRD Sport 4x4 does and I don't have the tech package. Either way, appreciated reading your post.

    2024 Tacoma (hopefully)
I had a 2015 Canyon SLT and got out of it for a Tacoma after 8 months. Why? Partly brand loyalty, partly that I really liked the look of the new Tacomas, partly because I wanted a manual transmission, and partly out of reliability concerns.

    Good:

The GMC rode nicer on the highway and got 2 more MPGs. The automatic transmission on the GMC was excellent compared to what I've heard about the 2016 Taco autos. The interior was very luxurious and comfortable.

    Bad:

It was not a Toyota. Its off road ability was questionable. It got recalled twice in the first 5 months I owned it. The car-like feel was not for me; I want a truck that feels like a truck. It was insanely expensive for a midsize truck ($41,xxx MSRP).

The Canyon was leased and they were in short supply still at the time. The GM dealer happily bought out my lease as soon as I mentioned I wanted out of it. I'm much happier with the Tacoma. In a nutshell: Canyon=Car-like truck, Tacoma=Truck.

    Thanks!
It was a hard decision and I'd been watching the new Tacoma since the forum started talking about them. Believe me...I had an Inferno on my mind for a long time. When it came down to deciding and looking at them side-by-side, the options & extras won the war. I'm not opposed to giving other manufacturers an opportunity to prove themselves. So, we'll see.

I can agree with the 'car-like' aspect. The Canyon is lower to the ground and there's virtually no approach angle up front. The Tacoma has certainly built an off-road presence that nobody else can touch in the truck market. The aftermarket accessories & off-road market has exploded over the years for the Tacomas. I know some of the Tacoma guys complain that the new 2016 is unchanged from the 2nd gen..... Well, consider that a blessing with aftermarket parts & accessories being available.

There are some guys who build the Canyon & Colorado for offroading (that I've seen) but nothing like the Tacomas. The availibity in aftermarket parts & accessories for the Colorado & Canyon is slim..... After 1.5 years of the trucks being on the market, you'd think there'd be more stuff available. GM certainly isn't pumping out production either. The trucks share a plant with commercial van production.

So for me? When I was much younger, I'd spent 10 years offroading with Jeeps & a 96 Tacoma. But now that I'm older, the body and mind aren't as adventurous as it used to be. A car-like truck works for me. Consider it a 'spoil me' time of life. LOL I'm sure, one of these days I'll grow out of needing a truck altogether. Kinda like that Toby Keith song.... Now my body says, "You can't do this boy" But my pride says, "Oh, yes you can". :)

It's a great move, go for it, you won't regret it!
I have compared the brand new canyon side by side with my taco and honestly, it (Canyon) just looks cheap build.
I do love the styling though, GM is good on that, but only that! lmaoo!
As for ppl complaining about the taco's transmission...Don't listen to them, they're just a bunch of pussy's.
They don't know, won't try, won't use the ECT, sport mode combo.
You would not believe what that does. You also have a manual mode on top.
What's not to luv about the new taco?? It's bad a$$, It'll beat or stay with anything out there.
    stay safe
    Cheers!

Back in February (end of month) - GMC dealer gave me $12,500 for my 2007 TRD Sport Access Cab with 75K miles on it. I could've got more by selling it privately, but I just didn't want the hassel. My tacoma was listed for sale on their website 2 days later for $18,500. It was gone (off the website) in a matter of a couple days.

I drove several of them too, but with standard power seats I could easily find a comfortable spot for my bad back.

Man, I love the truck, but there's no denying that the tranny is pretty bad in mountainous terrain, even when not in cruise. I think it could be EASILY improved if Toyota would fix the programming, but as to whether or not they'll be able to do that, who knows!

I'm now getting great fuel efficiency, but the tranny is frustrating as hell in the mountains. I live in Colorado, so i'll often drive up long, steady grades when heading into the mountains. I notice that, even when heading up a steep grade (5-10%) in 4th gear at 3500RPM, the tranny will upshift if I ever-so-slightly let up on the accelerator. As soon as I put a little more pressure on the accelerator, it'll downshift again. It can do this a few times heading up a grade. I find if I'm not accelerating up a grade, it'll upshift, and then it'll immediately realize it doesn't have the power, and it'll downshift again. This can become very frustrating in slight traffic in the mountains. You'll be fine if you keep accelerating up the grade in 4th, but if you come up on a car that's not moving very fast and you slightly let up on the accelerator, it'll upshift. When you hit the accelerator again, it downshifts again. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum. It's pretty annoying, but I can look past it considering how awesome the truck is in every other aspect. However, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about the tranny's durability after 100,000 miles of this!

Both Limited and Trd's Tacoma's have Heated side mirrors. We don't have apple carplay but we can still use Siri mobile assistant, which will send Text Messages. It will also read you text messages which can be amusing at times.

I've been real happy with my tacoma.. Seats are comfortable, good mpg 23-25, not having to take key out pocket is great, sound system is good for me, once I get the control arm holes plugged and it will be real quiet, .. I can't complain it's got all the luxuries that count.

...^^^... Ditto ... I drove my neighbor's Canyon and it was a nice truck ... but not for me. His truck has maybe 5,000 miles now on it and has been in the shop several times for little things, i.e. like rattles in dash and doors, a/c vents coming lose & water leaks.

His Canyon was high $30K's (close to $40k I think) and is pretty loaded, but not a diesel.

Thats just seems like a lot of $$$ for any mid-size truck to me ...

So why are you wasting your time in a 3rd Gen forum? You basically listed more than one reason why you don't like the current offerings?! (Scratching head in confusion).
