You're not going to be happy with the 2.7 Ecoboost if your current complains on the Tacoma are power with payload or trailering. You need displacement for those issues. Now the 3.5 Ecoboost is a great motor for this, or the proven 5.0 coyote motor. I have a 2013 F-150 with the 5.0 for hauling/trailering and it's great. My Dad has the same truck but with the 3.5, very impressive and almost even with the 5.0. I went with the 5.0 because it's proven and cheaper to repair down the road. The dealer was doing everything they could to sell me the 3.5 Ecoboost but I didn't budge. Plus they're way more $$$. My only complaint is it's a supercab and we have rear facing car seats. Puts me into the steering wheel at my height. Thankfully it's one kid so he goes behind the passenger seat and my wife is short. But she wants another and that won't fly behind me. Eventually I'll have to go to supercrew but I want to keep the 6-1/2ft bed so it looks like one day I'll be in a 3/4 ton truck at at that point, diesel. We have a 2016 DCSB TRD OR and it definitely has its place. Awesome truck for trail, reliability and tight city driving but hauling/trailering, no way. I liked a trailer with it once, pig. What's worse is I get 18/22mpg in my 5500lb 360hp 4x4 full size F-150 and the 2016 Tacoma is almost the same mpg. FWIW, people are saying go Tundra and sure, they're more powerful than the Ford but the fuel economy is horrible, low 10's! The Tundra will definitely hold its value better than the Ford but if you plan to keep it forever than resale value is not something I'd worry about. Good luck with what you pick! F-150 is a great truck, so is the Tundra and the Tacoma. It's your money, pick what fits your needs.

I'm gonna disagree. The 2.7 is the better engine. The 3.5 puts out lots of torque and has the potential to pull heavier loads, well over 10,000 lbs if equipped right. The problem is payload capacity. The tongue weight of the heavier trailers the 3.5 can pull eat up all of the GVWR. You can pull the load, but with only a driver in the truck. A more realistic towing capacity of all 3 engines is around 7000 lbs.

The 5.0 maxes out at around 9000 lbs, but because the payload capacity is typically better there is very little real world difference. And while not a deal killer, the 3.5 has had some issues that the 5.0 does not. As far as fuel mileage real world numbers will prove the 5.0 to get better fuel mileage than the 3.5. Especially when towing.

The 3.5 was a 1st gen turbo engine, the 2.7 is a more refined 2nd gen engine. It is the only engine that shows real fuel economy, beating Tacoma. It is faster and will out run either the 3.5 or 5.0 and properly equipped will still tow over 7000 lbs.

...^^^... if you go with a F-150 ... gave the 5.0 a hard look for long term use.

Here's the other kicker. I live at a mile above sea level and regularly traverse greater elevations than that. That 5.0 gets punished up here... The ecoboosts won't feel nearly as much up here.

Hey Colton, that is a great point! The thin air probably starves the NA V8! I am pretty much sea level here, maybe at most 20 feet above.

Also guys, remember the 2017 F150 3.5 EB is a different engine with a 10 speed.

Opinion warning: All the other hate on the Ford's should be looked at through a different lens. The new F150's are completely different animals, all aluminum construction, different engine, different transmission than anything that Ford has made in the past. Im sure I will get lit up for this one but it's a decent point to start the conversation knowing that everyone's premise of Ford making crap is predicated on points from trucks that have 10 year old technology. Free fire zone engaged.

I'll know soon enough as I have a rather large deposit down on a Raptor. Keeping the Tacoma though.

Never been a Ford fan, but my current work truck is a 2011 3.5 Eco - almost 171,000 miles. It hasn't had any issues other than a brake caliper hanging up. If I needed a full size, I'd buy one without hesitation. I've used it to pull some pretty heavy trailers. But, I really like the Tacoma better. It's just more fun to drive, even with the 4 cylinder. ;)

My work truck is a 13 F150 w the 5.0. About to turn 70k on the odometer and no issues to speak of. My wife and kids like the F150 better in every way. My 06 Tacoma has been reduced to a hunting/ fishing rig lol- about the only place it beats the F150.
