I saw the thread asking about modded trucks and insurance claims, and that prompted me to ask everyone, about selling, or trading in their modded trucks.

My 1st gen Tacoma had the big brake mod, but when I traded it in to the dealer, I wasn't even thinking about mods, and didn't say anything. If they sell it, the next owner is going to be in for a shock when they try and change the brakes.

I know that's a more obtrusive, and yet unnoticeable mod in comparison to something like a lift or skid plate etc.

    Just curious.

Even if you tell the dealer, unless they're die-hard Toyota gearheads, they won't care, much less know what you're talking about.

Even if you do tell them the information will not ultimately make it to the next owner.

    I wouldn't be too concerned.

Question for myself from experience. What mods should I remove because dealer won't give any extra credit value for mods

Dealers (sales department can care less) a lot of times all the mods end up on dealer's employees truck

Even if you told them they wouldn't care.
Also, they would not pass that info on.
I traded in my 2005 Dakota with many homemade mods because aftermarket support sucked for that truck. They did not care. They did not even open the hood and I had a crazy ass bullhorn intake on it. It also had a water pump leak, they did not notice because they never looked.
Moral of the story, be careful when buying a used vehicle.

They don't care because it's not worth their time. They offer a price that they know they'll get a return on investment. Mods aren't worth their time. If it's cosmetic that will help sell a vehicle then they may bump their offer but that's about it.

I've never traded in a vehicle. Ever.

And have no intention to either. Its almost always a losing proposition.

That said, buyers of my vehicles receive my ownership maintenace and mod records in an Excel workbook, along with any information / demonstration of how things are set up they wish to know or I deem important for them to know.

That includes a record of every drop of fuel too, so they see the real deal if they care.

Your trade will be looked by a mechanic prior to sale to new customer due to liability reasons . I wouldn't worry about it, I would tell them the addons to get more money out of the trade .

I guarantee you won't get a cent for the add ons, of anything it will net you the opposite.

Also by declaring the TBU all the guy receiving the trade is going to hear is "Yeah I'm a nobody and I fucked with the brakes." So there's even potential there for them to refuse your trade under liability concerns.

Why trade and not private sale? Especially here on TW, I'm sure someone wants a 1st gen is willing to give you more cash for it than the dealer ever will.

A private sale mods can actually be selling or haggling points but a dealer you're best just letting them look at it and tell you what they think. Don't put ideas or info in their heads it will only hurt your deal.

This right here, after the truck is traded in, a tech will go over the whole car and make a list of what needs to be done to get it ready for sale. They will go over everything. If its too expensive to fix they will wholesale the truck. If some of the aftermarket parts are unfit for used car sales, they will be removed and replacement OEM parts put in. As mentioned with the big brake kit, a tech probably looked at the kit, realized it not OEM and they either removed it and swapped in OEM, or they wholesaled the truck.

There are liabilities when selling a used car as a dealer. If some mod the last owner did is unsafe or just poorly done, the dealer is on the hook after they resell it.

anything mod related that you can take off or replace with stock I would before trading. My last ride I went as far as removing led interior lights and license plate led bulbs I left nothing not even floor mats on/in it that I paid extra for before trading.
