Hey guys, I’m thinking of trading my new 22 Double cab sport 2wd in for a 4wd. It has 650 miles on it. Should have gotten a 4wd. Do I need 4wd? No, but I would like one. What are your guesses on the dealer giving me what I paid for it a month ago? Did a KBB value and it’s giving me over what I paid for it. Share your thoughts with me.
Told my sales man already. Going in to tomorrow and see what they say. Tacoma’s don’t last a day on the lot over here.

You got more money than brains. I mean new truck which you probably waiting a long time for and so many others are still and you want to trade it in. Just saying.

Do you need a 4X4 or do you want one? If I were in your shoes I would keep what I have.

He states that he does not need 4x4 but he wants one now after buying a 2 WD.

I just want one. I don’t need one. Just thinking if I could get into a 4x4 for 2 grand more why not. Just thinking out loud here and welcome people’s opinions on the matter. Paid $40.500 for mine and see 4wds for $41-42k

Corpus Christi TX, that’s 4WD territory. I’ve owned a few Tacomas, my old 2004 was the only 2WD TRD with a locker, it didn’t help much in the sand, Galveston way.

We all make mistakes, but most would never admit it publicly, roll the dice at the dealer and see what happens. Check with Carvana and CarMax also, only takes a few minutes.

Dealer won’t pay you what you paid for it, maybe carvana will

This is what most likely is the outcome but the way things are right now maybe there’s a chance. Only way I’d consider the swap honestly

You could probably get into a brand new 4x4 SR5 for the 2wd Sport.

If you want to do it and can afford it then go for it.

If I was in your shoes and wished I had gotten the 4WD I would do it no matter what anyone said. The only difference is I wouldn't have asked on this forum because...well...you will see why lol.

I knew what I was getting into when I posted this here. Tacoma owners can be brutal  not taking anything personal. I know the sales man and he said we should be good on getting what I paid. We will see tomorrow.

I'd definitely shop around for offers to sell it to dealerships other than the one you bought it from, I'm currently in the market to sell my truck and Auto Nation has given me the highest offer over Carvana, Car Max, and KBB Instant Offer, the offer is $3k more than what I paid for it new, but it's a 2019.

    Good luck!

Dude, go talk to your dealer. Nobody here knows the specifics of your terms. You specify 650 miles, but sometimes there is a window to return. That said, in this market, you are not just going to return a truck and walk out with another one. So ask them what they can do. If nothing, shop around and see what others will offer you. Still not going to leave a lot with a brand new anything tho. But it's worth a shot especially in this market. Get what you want in the end. Don't dwell on it.

Carmax, carvana, givemethevin, etc. They will likely pay you more than the dealer for trade in. Also makes buying the new one easier and more straightforward.

If you want a 4wd, get it. If your going to have that truck for awhile, it should be the one you want. You don’t want to be driving around for a couple of years doubting yourself. Just my opinion.

Sell it private, if you paid MSRP you may get someone willing to pay your that same full price ASAP to avoid the long wait potentially.

But, then you may have to wait for your 4x4

All I'll say: don't go from one rash decision to another, and set yourself even further back. Maybe drive the 2wd and make sure there's no other changes you'd like to have?

Not sure how it works in Texas, but in Ohio you only pay tax on the difference between the sales price of the new vehicle and the trade-in amount of your trade. So if the difference is $3k you only pay tax on that amount.

Even though you might be able to sell it for more to Carvana, etc. you will then have to pay tax on the entire price of the new one.

Jealous. In CA you pay full sales tax at every sale.
