I have a 2017 SR5 2x4 and I'm wanting a 4x4. there is a 2016 SR5 4x4 close by that I am thinking about trading for... what would be a good difference out of pocket for such trade?

I'm thinking no more than $1,500 out the door since the 2017s are about 2k more than the 2016s where... same mileage, pretty much the same options. I will just require that they swap the wheels/tires as I have the off road wheels/tires and it makes a huge difference to me.

Depreciation will kill you too dealer will nail you. Plus the 2016s have had plenty of issues it might have been dumped because it was a lemon. Wouldn't risk it.

    Like, so many.
Make sure you get a CarFax. I picked up a low mileage 2016 and it drove flawlessly.

Is this a want 4x4 to actually use, is it a need or are you just looking to have the 4x4 badge on the back to convey alpha status? Since you already settled on a 2wd I think the need most likely isn't there and it is the latter so I wouldn't trade down (back a year and unknown miles or previous ownership) to get something unless I absolutely was going to need or use it regularly. Your call, I would expect a few thousand hit.

I have been camping twice since I bought it in octobar of 16 and once got stuck in mud after a hard down pour. I live on a farm and didn't think I would need it since my dad has a 4x4... but I have gone up and down a hill a couple of times on the farm without problems... but still there might be the need.

I don't care about the status etc as I would debadge it anyway... I'm not that type of guy. I initially didn't want it because of the extra $$$ I would fork out and was already paying more than I really wanted, but didn't want to wait... :\

Exactly what changed in 2017 from 16 ?
They are exactly the same except for tsb.
Why these rumors all the time ?
I see people with issues the minority in here.
People trade and sell trucks because of many reasons. Ridiculous.

smitty99 is right. Here is a list of things I have had to do myself. Feeling like a broken record though.

    - Just retorqued my rear diff bolts they were tightened way less than the 33 ft/lbs they were specced to; it has fixed the weeping
    - Bought a transmission shift controller to fix the issue that Toyota will not fix.
    - Fixed the A pillar dash rattle by disassembling the a-pillars and using weatherstripping foam because the stock Toyota foam blows and wasn't even put on the right spot
    - Fixed the headliner rattle by taking down the Crawl Control area and taping and insulating everything
    - Filled rear diff, front diff and transmission to their factory specified levels
    - Used RTV silicone around license plate lights and bed light to ensure they do not leak water in the long run
    - Redid all my speakers because the OEM Premium system is absolute trash

I like fixing things myself and DIY. If you do not... good luck with a service department. Remember warranty work pays the least at a dealership so you probably will not pull a Master Tech. Most dealerships that I know will give you the first year tech or the lower paid guy. Do you think they will use a trim removal tool if you say there is a rattle behind there or a flat head screwdriver and scratch the living hell out of your panel. I know first hand.

Fluid checks rattles and bolt retorque are not major issues imo keeping a truck from 300k. Keep the Chevy for a few years and we can talk some real problems.

It is true but if I wasn't diligent about it I would be driving around until the first scheduled fluid change. The PDI was supposed to cover all fluids. For $1200 they washed the truck. Think of the damage that would or could be caused by driving 30000 miles before one realizes there is a problem. I DIY, if you do not wouldn't that be an unpleasant surprise.

"Oh my 2 diffs and transmission have premature wear, but the PDI said it was fine and it wasn't checked until the maintenance minder told me so." Would this help you if the problems arise after 60000 miles and your powertrain warranty is up?

Seriously doubt damage being a tad low on fluids, and you should do the recommended fluid changes at 60k I believe. Ever drive a quart low of oil in an engine and say gotta replace the engine now, lol. Come on.

So 1 quart low in the rear diff, transmission and .6 quarts low in the front diff when their capacities are 4.2 (24%), 12 (8%), and 1.6 (38%) low respectively. This over 60000 miles? People have had weird shifting being 1-2 quarts low on transmission fluid... search the forums. Oil is a different matter; however if it was 1 quart low I would put the quart back in.

So now the diffs are underfilled or you are claiming from seepage ?
Of course if you have slippage you know it's low! Common sense.
So all tacos are low on all fluids causing damage. :facepalm:Got it.

Mine was flat out underfilled. The seepage is so miniscule.

I bet half the people here wanting to trade their 4x2 for a 4x4 don't really need 4x4 they just think they do after coming to this forum.

Ahaha damn, this thread could use some cleaning up. OP if you want a 4x4 then get it. Might as well get it now while you can do an easy trade and take a minimal loss. I say go for it.
