I'm considering trading my 2017 TRD SPORT DCSB automatic. I got everything that I wanted except a manual trans.I don't like the auto.I miss my manual. I have beem watching the thread on the thing that improves shifting timing but still thinking about trading for a 2018.
I always feel raped everytime I buy or trade at a dealer so I was hoping that some of you that have alot of experience trading give me some tips on what to do and not to do. Some not all dealers are not honest and if you don't watch every move they will nail you (me). I know I will take a hard hit on price but I want to learn more about it and see what happens.
    Any advice would be nice!
    thank you for your time.

Trading will always be brutal. This is where they make most of their money, and few people want a 1-year old used car when a brand new one is only a couple thousand more.

Don't be desperate. Be willing to walk. Don't rush, and don't fall in love with/get absolutely set on one particular truck. Buy with your head, not your heart.

It's a pain in the arse but sell it privately and then go and negotiate the purchase of your new truck. That way they only make money on the new purchase not on the trade in.

Mainly what fresnoR said OP, sad to say.
That said, don't add anything, (ugh!) keep it stock because you're not likely to get any added value and look everywhere for the best price.

    Good luck!

Do you need to know, or care?
Depending on his tax laws, selling it privately and buying a new one could be a big hit to the wallet.

    I'll take a swing.......

    I just traded my 16 TRD Sport 2WD with 8K (MSRP $36,300 for a 2016 4Runner Premium (MSRP $37,774) I gave the dealer $750.

I Paid $33500 OTD for the Tacoma. So basically I got a $37,774 4 Runner for $34,250 OTD which is a decent discount on the 4Runner

What you should do is price your truck in "good" condition from KBB. NADA, Edmunds take an avg of all three trade in prices. Work one deal at a time. Negotiate your buy price THEN bring in and negotiate your trade. Do not tell them you are trading until your get your buy price locked in. Your trade will be paid as actual cash value rather than the funny numbers they use when people shop payments

Go to Cargurus.com and look for a similar truck for sale used and subtract $4000 That might be close to the dealer actually paid. Also look how long they have been SITTING without an owner, That will tell you how fast or slow a specific vehicle is selling,

If you try to sell privately the buyer will want a price well under what they can get a discounted new one for, You should get $30K privately Much more than that and they will buy new

Start at one dealer, get their offer and take that to the next. Repeat till you get the best result. Dealers will compete with each other.

Research trade in value on your current truck, so you know what you have to work with. Settle on the price of what you want, then bring in the trade. Know what is the lowest acceptable price you are willing to take for your trade. Be willing to walk and let them know you are in no rush. When they see you are reasonable and not desperate, they may be more inclined to work with you.

You will definitely enjoy the Manual, you also might be able to get a better price on a leftover 17 after the 18s start hitting the lots.

You are a 110% right on everything you say. I did not have the opportunity to drive one over night. I only had a small area to test drive because my sales person said their insurance limited the driving area. It was a curvy back road and it did not really give you a good idea about trans but everything else was good.

Either sell it privately or if you have one nearby, take it to Carmax, they will give you a quote to buy your truck that's valid for 5 days. Take that offer in hand to the dealer when trading in for the new truck. They will match it at least. I had them appraise an old car I had and their offer was actually pretty fair.

Carvana will give you a sight unseen trade quote that you can print out. I used that the last time I traded in a vehicle. I showed the dealer what carvana would give me and they matched it.

    Too few to list.
You'll never be happy unless you get what you want. Since you already know you're taking a hit on the trade and if you're finances can handle the payments, then get what you want.

Negotiate the price of the new truck first. Don't tell them about trade in until you're okay with the new truck pricing.

Don't negotiate monthly payment as this can be manipulated by the term and APR. Always negotiate on purchase price.

Know how much your trade is worth.

I guess that's true. Here in Va. you don't get taxed selling but will get taxed buying. I've always sold privately and gotten better prices than any dealer was willing to give me.
