Throw some weight in the bed and try out AutoLSD in those situations where 4wd is not convenient.

I did some AutoLSD experiments some time back.

The reality is I completely misunderstood what you guys were discussing and went off on a tangent, that I did not think was a tangent. lol.

However, the statement I made, which you quoted is correct. Of course, your scenario is different and doesn't work in 4lo, maybe. In deep snow, 4lo gets me through stuff that 4hi will not because in 4 high I just spin and bog down.

Found an exact video that explains what I was saying. This guy literally says what I said, except with a down unda accent. 4lo is lower speeds and more torque.

this guy says it as well at 6 minutes

I hated it in my '07; unpredictable. I'd rather have had an open diff than that thing.

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
    I've got a spare 8" Supra diff if you're looking to experiment. 4.30 LSD, think it's a 1.5-way clutch.

If I add up the weight of sandbags, traction boards, tonneau cover, air compressor and bed mat I'm getting close to 310 lbs of weight. Plus I think there are some reinforced spindles and a small tool bag back there too.

That’s more weight than I typically carry. I have nothing except traction boards, a shovel, and spare tire right now.

Yeah, good set of snow tires is about all you need. Have a locker in my 1st Gen and rarely used it the 19 years I have owned it. Why I went with SR over the OR…auto LSD is good enough. Speed and momentum is your friend busting through snow.

Studs only work in certain temps, plus the sound drives me nuts. Stud-less can out perform studs.

I know this thread is getting old and everyone has gone back and forth between the same argument the whole time, but I shouldnt be spinning my tires at a flat intersection in the rain, seemingly stuck on flat concrete trying to get out of the middle of an intersection. I also shouldnt have to stop and put it in 4wd on concrete. To me that is a safety hazard and the exact opposite of the main purposes of a 4wd truck in the first place. If auto lsd "works", it must be completely inoperable on my truck because I havent seen it help once when turned on... I'd hate to see it in the snow. I've had lsd or lockers on every truck ive owned and they have always been great for wet roads, snow, and mud especially if your simply used to driving rwd vehicles that all have rearends that tend to slide in turns. If you cant handle that then get a front wheel drive

Played around with the auto lsd the last couple days on the snow and ice…it took some effort to get the truck to break loose and fish tail, had to floor it. There is a slight delay before it engages but it does work. Couldn’t decide what I liked better the auto lsd or traction control turned on, with it on the truck stayed straighter instead of trying to swap out.

Coming off a truck with a locker, I am impressed.

Getting stuck on wet pavement is foreign to me. Can you explain? I have heard reports that in some places where it doesn’t rain often that the pavement attracts goo that gets slippery when wet, but I have never experienced it.

I use AutoLSD to get out of snow/ice covered parking spots and intersections and it works ok. It’s nothing like 4wd though.

Unloaded pickup trucks are about the worst automobile there is in low traction situations. Added weight to the bed helps.

Your Lsd is working well. Problem is when all the ground is wet both tires lose traction. Lsd, like a locker works when one wheel is losing traction and the other pulls you out. I have a porsche turbo with a motorports lsd and in wet terrain it can be scary. But i habe 760 hp to the wheels in a 3300 lb car. On dry ground it sends power to the wheel with most traction. Off road an lsd will do the same and it does work well. My first early rubicon had a rear lsd and it worked well off road, much better than open diffs. I dont currently have an lsd but I would be happy with a truck equiped with lsd.

You have never spun the inside tire when making a right turn from a stop sign on wet pavement?

A few times when I was trying to do a burnout, but that is still way different than getting stuck in an intersection. Wet pavement is very close to dry pavement in comparison to snow and ice.

Understand but the Auto LSD doesn't know the difference between pavement and mud. It just sees a speed difference between the two wheels and the ABS is actuated on the wheel that is spinning faster.

No disagreement, but I cannot ever imagine getting stuck on wet pavement.

Agree but what does that have to do with Auto LSD? Maybe I should reread this thread?

There is a hill not far from my house. It is a very busy main road and the hill is steep with an intersection at the top. After a few days of dry weather, the first day of rain, lots of vehicles have traction problems when the light turns green. The first rain makes all the oil dropped on the road during the dry days slick before it washes away. It is quite common around here.

I’m confused you quoted my post that started with “Getting stuck on wet pavement is foreign to me. Can you explain?”

It must be more than a “few days” of dry weather. We get plenty of that where I live and I’ve never needed to use a traction aid when it starts raining.

Also, spinning your wheels a little is different than getting stuck. To me, getting stuck is the inability to move forward. This happens to automobiles on a regular basis in the winter where I live. These are the situations where I find AutoLSD or 4hi useful
