I bought a 1990 Ford F150 (beater with a heater) for all my heavy hauling dirty work, helluva a lot cheaper than buying a new truck to beat up.

Sell the Tacoma as a private sale . Buy a Cummings diesel truck . Those things are tanks and will run forever.

Congrats on the move! I too recently bought land in the Black Hills, but no house there yet. I'm already planning my garage and the toys... Enjoy!

    Congratulations on the move.

We are in the process of moving to southern Utah - similar acreage, but we're building the house. Just west of Zion.

We currently have a 4runner and an older land cruiser. While I don't have the commute that you do I will have to go back to the SF Bay Area once or twice a month for a day or two - I'll probably end up flying because the round trip air fair is less than the cost of fuel.

However for hauling shit around the ranch and local running around, I'm looking to buy a 2006 - 2007 dodge 2500/3500 with the 5.9 cummins (and a manual) and relatively low miles. Easy to wrench on, good power, great mileage.

1mil for 40 is super high, must have bought in the high end of Denver or in a touristy place.

Roughly, 1000' in elevation change causes a 3% change in horsepower.

I have been living at 7000' since the summer of '92 coming from the seacoast of NH. Driving 52hp VW diesels, I got used to it and look at it differently. If I think my Tacoma is fast at home, when I go lower in elevation like Coloraod Springs, Denver, Phoenix, etc it really Hauls ass! Let your tach needle swing over 5000rpms and have fun!

My Cummins stock got better fuel economy than both my 15 and 18 Tacoma. Might be something worth looking into.

I’d rather not tie up the cash. Might just keep the taco and buy an older beater for the house. Thanks guys for the input.

I would buy a used 6.2 Raptor long before the new chevy offerings. Or do what any other sane person would do, get an old 4x4 beater for the farm. A cummins if you can find one.

Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. How hot does it get there in the summer at 7000'? Sounds like a recipe for forced induction (turbo or supercharger.)

If you no longer have to be concerned about parking in the city then perhaps a full-size would work. Keeping the Taco and adding a full size to the fleet sounds like another good option big spender. : )

    What do you fly?

and if you don't mind being a guinea pig, all the electric trucks are coming out next year. Electric isn't affected by altitude obviously and the power / torque thing is over the top insane. Range is getting better as well. Just sayin, who knows ...
