    If you have an infared camera, those small bulbs are what provide the illumination. There is a small one in the center of mine that shows during the day and turns blue in the setup mode. If you have a standard flash, any lights can be covered up, but if you have a bunch of small bulbs, dont cover them, unless you are not interested in night pictures.
