What's a good "long-range" GMRS setup? What's the ideal for vehicle mounted antennas, head units, mics and tuners, if there are gmrs tuners? I have an SWR meter that measures watts as well. Can that be used to adjust positioning/height of a GMRS antenna?

Assuming you're talking about me because I'm the only other one in here. Sorry if you feel I'm jacking you're thread. Thought input from everyone is welcome.

    So far I've noted

-I dont think CB is dead, there's nothing wrong with it. It's still very commonly used on trails and in general.
-GMRS is also a good tool and offers great wattage. Then we brought up antennas, which we both know help and you brought up your point on it as well.
    - I mentions that the GMRS channels are up against the UHF channels so I wouldn't worry about Ham vs GMRS because it the same power and close frequencies without having to take the test.
    - Mentioned the best comms are whatever the people you go out with. Because it'd be bummer if you got a cool set up and no one else is on it. Happens from time to time, people over look things sometimes and it's just a friendly reminder.
-mentioned the only time I really use handhelds is for spotting and that I personally don't use them that much. My CB, GMRS or HT.

And I've repeatedly said I think GMRS and cb is the way for this specific person To go

So back to my question above, since I already have the packaged Midland MXT275 kit, I can tell I need to cut the 12V "cigarette lighter" plug and rewire a standard connector to wire the red straight to the battery. Is the other step to wire the grind wire to the closest ground, or wire to the ground on the battery? How can I improve the basic kit? I'm assuming an improved antenna would be a good start, but what are the best antennas? How do you guys run your antennas and what do you avoid when running your wires, power and ground wires included.

    No idea Joey.

@Beretta4x4 contrary to whatever he was blowing up on me for, I think your set up is just fine. After looking it up and checking with tex you can get an aftermarket antenna. Antennas and their placement help a ton. Hopefully someone hwo has tried some and can chip in. I don't want to speak up on anything I haven't used.

Power wise, what does your unit have for a plug? Is it naturally the cigarett outlet type?

It's the cigarette lighter type, but I'm planning on hacking it up and using ring connectors to wire it up to the battery, instead.

For a GMRS you really only need to run the power to the battery. Only reason to go further is for HF, or CB radio. Just run power to the battery, and mic to where you wan't it. Easy breezy.
