Thanks very much for the link and for chiming in! Extremely helpful. Not sure how I missed that one on my query. I'm pretty set on the OR at this point, mostly because of the manual transmission. It's too bad Toyota doesn't offer the same wheel and grill options. The TE is the 2nd best looking trim IMO, beat only by the Pro.

No problem, glad I could help! Search bar sucks sometimes IMO.

Yeah for you, if manual is important, get the OR. You'll be happier. Just an FYI, long term I am sure those parts will get released for sale by Toyota and you could make a Faux Trail

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not like the stock OR has better clearance either? Maybe I missed your point.

More importantly when will the TRD police chime in to admonish Toyota for selling the TE with the heritage grill?

Just my $0.02 but the trail edition is marketing more than anything. Most (not all) of what the TE entails can be added to an SR5 for cheaper than the TE sticker

Pulled this from another post I made elsewhere. May add some clarity.

I did the math on the options and it made sense to me over an SR5 4x4 DCSB:

    $3765 Trail Edition
    • Bronze Wheels - Could sell old OR wheels, but still probably $500 to trade out and the time hassle of doing it
    • Grille - OEM grille probably over $300 and you're modding a major safety component
    • Lift - $500? Just guessing. It's springs and a block in back
    • Blackout Badging (let's say $30 off Amazon)
    • A/T tires - would have cost me nearly $1000 to get these mounted and installed
    • Floor Liners - $200
    • Locker - I don't know but it's worth a lot and is warrantied ($750?)
    • Bed Storage - not everyone's cup of tea but I bet they're $750 msrp at least
    • 120V Outlet - let's say $300
    • Skid Plate - OEM OR skid plate probably $250

So you can quickly see how this package makes sense for a lot of us with different priorities. That all actually comes out to around $3600 and the truck comes how I like it from the factory with a warranty. Seems fair to me, I think they could have priced it a bit farther from an OR but I think it's actually the base SR5's fault, it's only 2k cheaper than an OR and that's too close.

That is the point. A feature of the package is a 1” lift. As a function of a “trail” package that is more of a cosmetic than functional upgrade. If Op put $3k+ into a suspension lift instead and new shoes on either base model that’s a fair start for a functional improvement.

I would argue that it's still a lift. It does positively impact approach, departure, and breakover from the TRDOR stock suspension. But yeah, a 3" lift would be even better. It can't just leapfrog the OR too heavily.

I think it all depends on priorities. Everyone, if they wanted the best off-roader, should buy an SR 4x4 and drop 15k into it. But, the reality is there are convenience and quality of life features, or just cosmetic, which some prefer - and want a warranty too.

I think the only decent feature is the locker. I saw one s few days ago, nice looking but I want more features, longbed too. However I'm still loving my Tacoma!

I obviously wouldn't go so far as to say that mine is as good as the one I have at home with a quick charger but it does pretty well as long as I have it in the right spot - passenger side, and tight towards the cup holders.

The first time I tried mine I drove 40 miles and it charged 2%, I later read that it does better in a certain spot and without a phone case, but haven't tried that.

To me that makes it useless. I wouldn’t be taking my case off every time

Yeah, Qi Charger works well for me as well. My note and S8 both in a case, both charge fine. They do get hot when used for a long time in the summer though.

I had read somewhere (in here) that it has to be on the driver's side, up front.....maybe that's my problem, I had it in the wrong spot. Going to try passenger side tomorrow.

Maybe for a different phone driver's side and forward is right but not for mine!
