I just traded in my 2015 SR5 for a2022 Tacoma trail edition last weekend. The only reason I could justify buying a trail over a TRD off road would be the trail having a vacuum brake booster versus the TRD off road having an electronic brake Force module. The electric brake booster works great and seems very reliable, but I have always hated the brake feel, and the little pedal vibration you get whenever the electric motor has to turn on to repressurize the system. I had a 2010 Tacoma, and 2014 4Runner trail with the electric brake booster and they both annoyed me to no end. Everything else about the trail is sweet, the wheels are cool the lift is legit, with different coil springs versus just spacers. It has a few more skid plates than the standard SR5 and Toyotas regular highway all-terrain tires which I promptly switched out for a set of second-hand duratracs. I don't really get the idea behind the storage boxes, but I guess that gives me something to sell. Other than the 3.5 V6 the truck is sweet. But that vacuum brake booster is really what made me buy the truck. Just so much more predictable when it comes to hitting the brakes on ice. If you don't mind the electronic booster I would say go for the off-road.KIMG0118.jpg 16433331698647436934559809829402.jpg

How much was your truck if you don't mind?

    Looks great.

As the owner of an OR, I gotta say, I have never felt anything unusual about the brakes lol. Now I'm concerned my truck is broken, or I are dumb.

Ha, I wouldn't worry about your brakes I would say I am unusually picky when it comes to things like that. The electronic brake booster is a pretty cool system, makes things like trail control work. Just something I notice that bothers me. As far as a review more pics and what I paid for it I will get more pics when it's lighter outside and post them I paid 500 under MSRP but had to drive 900 miles to get it. I only got the 500 under MSRP because the salesman screwed up on his quote and I called him on it. I got pretty lucky and looked really hard called probably 20 dealerships all over the country. On my trip to trade trucks, I picked up a set of Facebook marketplace Goodyear DuraTrac 265/75 tires with a thousand miles on them, and an ARE canopy in the cement color which I will soon be spray-on bedlinering all black. My 2015 Tacoma was almost a twin to what I bought, it had 90,000 miles on it I put a 2 in Old Man emu/bilstein lift with light racing upper control arms on that truck with 255 75 17 BFG mud terrains on 4Runner trail rims. It was a super nice truck but I paid $30,000 for it 6 years ago with 24,000 miles on it and they gave me $26,500 for it as a trade. 3,500 to own a truck that long is just a good deal no matter how you look at it. I'm not sure that I like the new one as much as the old one but I'm sure it will hold its value and serve me well. I will let you guys know what I think as time goes on.Screenshot_20220127-185900.jpg KIMG0068.jpg

HA I'm not. I got 65k miles on my 17. I've got other issues instead lol.

Crazy the value any generation of Taco retains. Hope you enjoy the new truck.

Not me. I sold my wifes Rav, maybe that's what you are thinking.

My truck is paid off and I will be keeping it for a couple more years hopefully.

Hey folks, new member here coming from a 2008 FJ. Gave the FJ to my son and now looking to get a Tacoma. Don't know much about them but am here to learn. Mainly looking for the Trail which I didn't even know existed until I checked the website. I figure I don't need all the fancy off road assistance available on the TRD Off Road since I did fine in my FJ. Question, why can't I build one on the Toyota site? Is it a regional thing? I'm in socal btw. Thanks for the help.

I leased an offroad way back in 2016 because of how it drove.

After driving a trail I was really close to doing it again.

The trail oddly has really good on-road manors and soaks up parking lot dips and pot holes better in my opinion.

The locker is all I ever used as well. The trail really is a sweet spot right now.

my first choice was the TE, liked the seats better, lift, looks too, but in 2021 the TE $1700 option with no locker, was a good price.....then in 2022 the TE option was about $4k more, with locker, so that made it same price as a OR which has more options, so i went with an OR

I had the same dilemma as you describe and although folks here justly pointed out the 2022 trail is pricey compared to an OR with options (or an SR you could customize to be similarly capable) I ended up going for the Trail Edition.

Regarding build on the website. I wasn’t able to do so either. Had to call a dealer and put down a $500 deposit for an allocation. Took me two months from deposit to driving off the lot.

I’ve had it for two weeks now and I am very happy with the choice I made. Straight off the lot it’s noticeably a better stock ride than the OR. Some other things I like about it compared to an OR:

    - I don’t need to do anything to it. Sure I’ll do the diff breather, AC drain mod, maybe some seat covers… but one thing I like about this truck is that I will be able to avoid the urge to customize it for a very long time, it’s fine fine fine as is completely stock.
    - The interior appearance is super clean, all black seats and black on black interior trim. Looks great and not busy like the OR interior.
    - I would never use the crawl control features in the OR. I prefer that the TE is just a basic SR5 truck with a rear locker just like my 2004 Tacoma
    - The 2022 TE diff/axle is same as OR/Pro, nice to have the bigger locking diff.
    - The appearance package (bronze heritage grill and bronze wheels) wasn’t a selling point for me, but I will admit it looks awesome and I don’t think I will ever want to change the wheels or grill.
    - Physical key! No push button start, I personally love having a key to fire it up.
    - The bed boxes are silly but have already come in handy a few times. I will probably take them out and put them back in as needed since it’s fairly easy to remove/reinstall.
    - No chrome to cover up. TE is already blacked out on the badges and rear bumper caps are paint matched.
    - All weather floor mats.
    - Comes standard with tow package and auto trans cooler.
    - Vacuum brake boost instead of electric module like mentioned above.
    - Overall far fewer electrics to worry about malfunctioning in the future.

Reasons I maybe would have bought an OR instead of a Trail:

    - If I wanted a manual transmission.

All in all it’s a great truck with mainly the bare necessities and a stock configuration that’s hard to beat if you can live without some of the fancy tech offered in the OR.

Thanks for the input coopnugz. I may just end up with the 4x4 SR5 and do the lift and wheels on my own. It will essentially look like a trail when I'm done with it. It will be built for function first and foremost.

Since when does the OR not come with a locking diff? I've seen posts that allude to this. My 2019 TRD OR sure as hell does as I've used it a time or two.

No push button start or smart key on the 2022 TE. That was a non starter for me since I drive a lot for work. Just throwing that out there. 2023 sr5 is getting push start smart key

All Off Roads should have a Locker, even the 2 Wheel Drive ones.

I have an OR on order and contemplated the Trail. I want the LED lights, I think the suspension is better even ON road (I had a 2019 OR for 3 years), but Im also the opposite with the rims. I would look at the bronze wheels as something I would need to swap out, just my opinion/taste. I don't have a preference on grills, and I would miss push button/smart key.

The factory lift was the one thing that was pulling me towards the TE. They're both great trucks, not sure you could go wrong either way.
