Hey guys, so I have an '03 Prerunner (with the locking rear diff.) and I was wondering if it was a good idea to try any trail riding. Not anything hardcore but still something to get my tires off the pavement for a few hours.

Anyways if you guys know of any trails in East County that I might be able to tackle, I'd like to see what I can do. Thanks!

Too many routes to suggest...but here's a few of our faves:

    1. Font's Point, Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Great sunset drive, about 4 miles each way, deep sand washes, rewarded with views of the Borrego Badlands. A def green trail, and Truckhaven Hills is just to the east if you wanna "flex" more there.

    2. Little Blair Valley/Pictograph Trail, Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Easy green trails, with some cool history and hikes.

    3. Oriflamme/Rodriguez Canyon Trails, just off of Highway 78 on the Banner Grade, east of Julian. Takes you from an alpine climate right down to Anza Borrego and Hwy S2.

    4. The town of Ocotillo, and surrounding trails in the southern portion of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. The Dos Cabezas siding is here, some cool rail history and great desert trails.

Hope this helps the OP a little in your quest for easy dirt. :)

Anderson truck trail in Alpine. I've had a couple close calls after the rain but that's half the fun!

Otay Mesa near the border. I used to drive that and mountain every day when I was on military orders for the border. The mesa is a giant dirt lot and after it rains it can get REALLY muddy to where you can get stuck which can be kinda fun. The trail through the mountain is an easy going dirt trail but go SLOW where ever you are as there are Border Patrol all over and even on quads. The last thing anyone wants to hurt or kill an agent due to negligence (I came close to some crazy crashes with bro-dozers). The backside that faces the otay lake is really narrow and pretty scenic and a cool dirt trail that is cliff side. I would advise flagging down an agent while up there and asking them if it is clear to head down or up. The truck trail is so narrow that you can't pass. If you're cool, they'll be cool :)

*EDIT* I just saw you're in Lakeside, just head down the 125 til it ends, go east on otay mesa road til it ends and you're there :D

Sounds easy enough! I'll have to try that out especially I'll be driving to Otay quite a bit for work!

By the way, this is a little bit of some four wheeling you can do out there. Just a reminder though, be cool with BP.
NOTE: I was not the one driving, I was actually screaming from the vehicle behind them, "DON'T SLOW DOWN! DON'T SLOW DOWN!!!!"
I'm giving the thumbs up though. Squad leader took the pic for me :troll:
