    Hello everyone,
I am a new member but have been using the forum for reading and research purposes for a few months.
    Currently I have a:
    2018 Tacoma OffRoad4x4 DC SB
    Bilstein 6112 (front)
    DiamondBack bed cover
    Warrior roof rack
    Smittybilt RRT
I want to add a semi hidden bumper and winch but I’m worried about the overall weight of my machine.

My question is how heavy is your truck when you go camping, wheeling, and or “overlanding”?

With everything loaded up for camping and myself, wife and dog in the truck I’m about 100lbs under the GVWR of the truck, and my setup is fairly light compared to a lot of guys on this forum.

With driver but no passenger aprox. 4,800lbs.

    - Softopper, C-load 265's, recovery gear/bag, large rubbermaid w/ older camping supplies, small suitcase, 1-2 coolers.

    GVWR = 5,600lbs.
    Stock curb weight = 4,195lbs.

Camper top with sleeping platform, tools, camping gear, food, fridge, sliders, full skids, HC rear with swingout, winch front bumper, tires, roof racks, awning, firewood...

The factory SR5 DCLB 4x4 is quoted at 4480lbs stock. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm at 6000lbs or more loaded. It adds up quick. I have 700lb rate springs up front and Dakar leafs with sumosprings in the back, so it still rides nice. I get about 18mpg city or highway, doesn't matter.

Most of what I do is trails, nothing too heavy. I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere considered "overlanding" or mild to moderate offroading. There's tons of crazy stuff I wouldn't do at offroad parks, and I typically avoid mud since I have ATs, not MTs. I haven't had any trouble other than beaching the middle of the truck on a berm from a lack of ground clearance.

I appreciate all the info for comparison guys. With my setup, I’m concerned about adding a Semi Hidden or completely Hidden winch.
I know winches are an invaluable asset but I’m struggling with the idea of increasing my gross weight by 90-150lbs. A small increase but I don’t want it to be the straw that breaks the Taco’s back. Maybe I’m just overthinking...

You don't sound too heavy right now. The tent and roof rack must weigh under 150 lbs. And that's pretty much all the weight you're carrying. You're thousands of pounds away from that straw breaking your back... Now, steel front/back bumpers and a pop-up camper in the back... then you're pushing it.

Also -- what happened to the rear passenger step? Catch a rock?

    Yes, you are, lol

It's enough weight to make the front end sag a little more than normal, but think about it like this: Do you notice a power drain when your wife or kids get in? Probably not. If you have adjustable coilovers, just crank them up a bit, or get new stiffer rate springs (like 882's or 883's or something) to help with the extra weight.

Everything has a cost benefit. I would say that a winch is easily the highest benefit with the lowest cost (in terms of weight) of just about anything people throw at their rigs.

I would rather have a winch, and think more about other things that may not be necessary to take with you, like all the extra "brolander" stuff people seem to be carrying around with them. Maybe you don't need that dual slide out bed rack with 50 qt fridge, skottle and a 5 gallon LP tank, when an MSR whisperlite would work fine. Do you "need" that wrap around RTT annex? Do you "need" that camp shower and awning? Hell, RTT's are pretty damn heavy. Also think about aluminum vs. steel skid plates.

I run a pretty minimalist setup for my Tacoma, with a 4 person ground tent that weighs like 10 pounds, 2 burner stove with those small green canisters, and everything else is from my backpacking days. Most of it fits in 1 or 2 yellow top boxes in the bed.

my rig was very heavy fully loaded. hit the scales on the way to red clay rally last year, 6420#, minus the RTT which I picked up on the way, so add 150# +/-. likely the reason 2 ring gears kerploded on me over 2 years. :anonymous:

truck was 2015 access cab, full armor, bumpers, winch, rear swingout with tire and jerry can, extra spare tire underneath, HD skids, sliders, plenty of tools, gear, extra fuel, water, camping gear, spare parts, etc.

    I took the plunge.
Ordered the CBI Hidden Winch Mount. Figured I would save some money and weight with the mount and spend it on the Winch.
I figured with synthetic line 90lbs max gain. Or steel wire 120lb max gain.

I think a lot of guys here are either exceeding or pushing close to the GVWR.

5020, totally empty. Add maybe 400 with gear and supplies for a several day trip. Definitely over GVWR.

Have 700 lb. Kings up front, upgraded brakes for sure, gonna add an extra leaf soon.

They have 600, 650, and 700. I think 650 is standard. Lots of threads about them

5500 lbs empty (no gear). usually at about 5900-6000 lbs fully loaded for a long trip. stocks gears + lots of weight = 11mpg :frusty:. wearing kings up front with 700# springs.
