#TRUTH. Even just the couple weeks I have had mine, the height of my Trail Edition is all I will ever need and my list of mods I want have changed. Speaker and Sound system upgrades have moved higher up the list.

How do the Bilstein 5100s compare to the Bilstein shocks installed on the TRD OR. Are the TRD OR shocks just rebranded 5100s.

If you keep your bumper chrome, your truck will be unique. I think everyone covers the chrome these days.

4600s. The 5100s are adjustable IIRC, but the OR is set from factory

I’m gonna run that chrome bumper for at least the first 300k miles. It’s the most old school thing left on Tacomas.

I was actually going get the TE but I wanted Silver and I couldn’t get past the almost white headliner. As for using the MTS system and crawl control I might not or… the Russians might invade, let’s all not get so relaxed that we forget the life lessons of Red Dawn. My OR might save our Republic while you TE guys get stuck in the mud and turn against our country!:infantry:

The stock Bilsteins on the Off Road model are closer to 4600s than 5100s. You're thinking of the 'TRD lift kit' (2" front/1" rear), which is a different thing entirely and comes with Bilsteins that are, in essence, 5100s with TRD decals and red boots.

For your TE, if you wanted to keep the ride height where it is now but improve ride quality? Buy off the shelf 5100s, not the TRD lift kit. Just my $0.02

Just do not suggest that they try to remove the tracking device themselves.

The OR comes with the 4600's or some factory variant of them the stock Trail comes with what ever the SR5 comes with and the factory lift. I drove all over the trails in Ouray and Silverton Colorado last summer bone stock from the factory and I got a chuckle passing a whole group of tricked out AEV Jeep Rubicons going up Imogine Pass as they were lumbering in 4-low <heavy sigh> . The stock Trail is pretty capable the tires are sufficient but do slip in rocky uphill shelfy scree fields as they don't have enough bite in my own opinion. Stock Trail lift should be sufficient for about anything that an occasional off-roader would want.

Having BFG All Terrain tires on my last two vehicles I've taken a shine for them and my plan was to replace the stock tires when the wore out with some BFG's one size larger 265/75. Never-the-less I got the upgrade itch back in December and went whole hog and got the tires 5100's rear add a leaf for a 2" lift and yet haven't been anywhere other than a dirt road Ha!

    My reasons for buying TE
paint color, wheels, grill, rear locker, it was on the lot
I literally bought it on my lunch break after seeing two come off the truck. One already belonged to someone but mine was up for grabs...
Bed boxes were pulled out in the first 24 hours and I was happy to get $140 for them

Just rolled it off the lot !!! So here comes the fun part.....
It is always interesting to hear why guys went with what trim or options. I ended up going with the Trail because I am on the East Coast, I head up to northern New England for hunting, skiing camping, and some off-roading on the beaches on Nantucket. Mainly the family and I head down to OBX in NC where we are beach and sand driving. I test-drove the OR and the Trail, I just did not need the crawl control and other features, the leather and heated seats don't do much for me. Sunroofs and their gaskets fail, so that was a non-factor. And I am the type of guy that less is more on vehicle electronics. So right off the lot, the Trail with the rear locker was set up for what I needed, with a few mechanical mods coming soon before we head to OBX in the summer. As far as the Tupperware in the bed, I am going to take those out ASAP just so I can fit my quad in the back. My dealer was awesome, he had the color that I was looking for, and the perfect price (no BS fees, "market adjustment", nitrogen fill, scratch protection, etc.), tax and plates. The only thing that I am looking to find out is about the fog lights, I do use them often while driving in the mountains. I noticed on the front cross support what looks like the factory quick connect for fogs on the other trims. I was watching a few YT videos on bumper replacement (one of the upcoming mods) and noticed trims with fog lights had to disconnect that quick connect when doing the front trim. So does anyone know if that quick connect is fused or if it just terminates and I can use the wiring for a Switch Pro? Sorry to hijack the thread, but I figured the Trail guys might know.

1" rear block, bilstein 5100s and 265x75r16 Goodyear Ultraterrains
I put 5100s on mine too and I love em. Also added 265/75 Ultraterrains and replaced the rear block with a 1" block to match the front spring height all in the first 1000 miles. Not doing another thing to the suspension or ride height.
Basically it's a better version of the TRD OR minus MTS. My storage boxes are filled with good equipment. Perfect.

Yeah don't understand the bias against the storage boxes It's a great place for my recovery gear kinetic rope, soft shackles, D-ring shackles and my receiver hitch shackle and a small shovel. The rear boxes were not a selling point with me but none-the-less there they are so why not put them to use? Besides as I understand it the storage boxes can be easily removed.

What really gets me about Toyota is the add-on crap they put on my truck that I didn't want or need but ended up having to pay for such as the mud flaps and predator side steps, nitrogen filled tires. Why not give customers that option when they buy the vehicle at the dealership? Yeah I already know the answer... It's harder to take something away from a customer then to add it on.

Hah! I had the same thing before I got my OR. Big o' list of things I was going to get then when I actually got the truck the list got short real quick.

Agree with all this. I was really torn between an OR and TE. Ended up going with the OR primarily for the softer shocks and I got a good deal. Availability definitely matters.

No scoop is yet another reason I chose the trail. I know I'm in the minority here but I think it looks way cleaner w/o the fake scoop
