Alright guys, so my dad just bought a DCSB TRD OR 2016 and would like to hook up a trailer brake to it.

I know the 2nd gens came with a harness adapter (which has a different plug than the 3rd gens).

Is the 3rd gen supposed to come with a harness adapter, or is it using a "standard" plug that a proper brake controller could just plug right into?

    Thanks!

    btw obligatory new truck pic.

It replaced the 1st gen next to it.... the 1st gen sold on CL in less than 24 hrs and it had 248900 trouble free miles on her.

The 2016 no longer comes with the harness in the glovebox and in fact Toyota does not offer this harness directly like they did in the past unfortunately. You have to buy the parts and assemble it yourself. I put together a diagram for it a while back when the same thing happened on the 2015 Tundra.

Alternatively, aftermarket companies offer an adapter like the Cequent/Tekonsha 3017-P adapter.

^ are those part numbers going to work for a 2016 tacoma?

Also sounds like i could just go with a "Tundra" brake controller with harness and be fine.

I believe the Tekonsha 3040-P is the plug Jeff Lange was trying to reference. Get that and something like a Tekonsha Primus iQ controller and its all plug and play and will run only about $100 total from Amazon. Other 2016 owners have said that the oem plug looks the same as the ones that came with the 2nd gens. So the Tekonsha 3040-P should work no problem.

Primus iq is an excellent unit and I went through this whole deal on my 05 Tundra with factory tow package. Very easy install. PM me if you have any questions.

No, the 3040-P will not work on the 2016, that is the one for the 05-15. 2016 uses a different connector (3017-P).

The 2016 Tacoma uses the same connector as the 2015-2016 Tundra.

The 2005-2015 Tacoma uses the same connector as the 2000-2014 Tundra among many other Toyotas.

    It's a different harness, wouldn't have worked in a 2016.

Ok, so at the moment there is no plug and play adaptor from Tekonsha for the 2016. The 3017-P is a unit that needs soldering. I'm confident in my soldering and would do that but others prefer a plug and play option. Honestly I would wait for that, it's probably on the way from Tekonsha now.

Is the receptacle plug up under dash near steering column like most vehicles?
