I need to put an electric brake controller on a 1997 Tacoma...I don't see a connector for these new brake controllers, so what wires do I connect to? Or is this even a good idea? Thanks for any help!

It can be done, but you're going to have to do a lot of wiring. What do you need to pull?

Your new Brake controller should come with instructions !!

I have not done any for a few years could be as long as 15 years

Last one I did was the wire to the brake light switch battery voltage and ground .

Then there is a rheostat to adjust brake application . between loaded and empty and just how much braking you want

For all I know they might be voice activated now

For my dad's trailer we got one that just plugs into the cig lighter and connects to the trailer wirelessly. Makes it a breeze to move between trucks.

I installed one on my 2001, and it wasn't difficult at all. You do have to go thru the firewall with a couple of wires however; still easy. I bought this one, and it worked perfectly!
    https://www.etrailer.com/Brake-Controller/Tekonsha/90195.html

I used to have a F350 4WD Diesel Ford for towing, and it had a factory-installed trailer brake controller. This Tekonsha did everything for me that the Ford controller did; was 100% satisfied with it, and I REALLY liked being able to completely remove it when I wasn't using the trailer. I mounted it at the bottom of the dash, just in front of my left knee.

I pulled this 14' x 7' trailer 4,300+ miles in 2 weeks from Michigan to Georgia then thru the mountains of Colorado (Rocky Mountain National Park - 12,000' !), and this controller rocks!IMG_1894.jpg

The good old days when you put a tee in the brake line to tell the control when the brakes were applied

I have a two-axle trailer that I need to use to haul a zero-turn mower and ATV to the family farm. Trailer is 6'x13', I built it out of a travel trailer frame with 2 3,500-lb axles. I was hoping there was a provision for the controller to be added in modular fashion, but doesn't sound like it. Thanks for the replies!
