I should be OK with the weight..Payload is 1620LBS. Lots of interesting comments and info. One of the reasons I was asking is because a member of our SXS group had a gear reduction in his Ford 6.7L to pull his 5th wheel. Told me it made a big difference in towing and better fuel mileage. I tow my 5th wheel with a 2016 Ram Cummins. I don't feel I need a gear reduction in it at all. Cost for the 4.88 or 5.29 kit and install here in my area (Utah)is about $2,500. Nitro kit.

Your payload is not 1620lbs, it's probably about 950lbs. Check your door jamb sticker.

I could be wrong. I got the info from a Google search. The only info on the tag on the jam of the drivers side door is GVWR=5600lbs and GAWR FRT= 3040 lbs and RR= 3280 lbs.. Nothing on payload. Curious where you got 950lbs? Thanks

The yellow sticker that shows tire pressure also lists the payload capacity.

OK, I found a better site for weights of the Tacoma's. Mine is 1155lbs payload.

    Ahhh.....the numbers are always confusing.

If you add the axle numbers (6320 lb), they total above the GVWR of the truck. Meaning, the axles are not a limiting factor. The truck is designed to handle the 5600 lbs. Ignore the axle rating, pay attention to the GVWR.

Take your empty truck (remove all gear) with a full tank of fuel and you to a CAT scale. Weigh it. This will be the unloaded weight (UVW). Now, subtract the UVW from the GVWR (5600 lb) to obtain the Cargo Capacity (CC) of your truck.

I'd still bet a beer yours is close to 200lbs less than that. Just check the sticker for the easy answer, weigh the truck for the most correct but more complicated answer.

OK...got it. The yellow sticker says "Total weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 950lbs. That's what I'll go with. Thanks again

I’ve considered the regear BUT being in 4 th gear I’m running around 2500 at 65. So if I regeared I would be revving out at 65 in 4 th. I have 235/85-16 tires. Given that I’m not going past 65 and not past 4 th I figure that im good as is. Obviously you can start out better with the regear. I’m towing a 4000 lb dry Micro
Minnie and have added a tranny cooler.

Remember, that sticker is as the truck rolled off the assembly line.

If you have added any modifications, changed tires/wheels.......then the 950 lb will likely be reduced.

    Weigh the truck.

Wow, what a beauty! What generator do you run the A/C with?

We plug into electricity where available... not into noisy generators, if no power then we go without.

I use a YETI400 GoalZero coupled with a battery for other power, lights, cpap machine, usb plugins for phone charging.
Solar panels live under the bed to recharge the GoalZero when needed.

These thing come completely empty - and you can trick it out as you please.
    The wife tricked ours out:

The GoalZero lives on the left hand quadrant ( open space ) and back-up battery lives next to it in closed hatch with cut-out to pass-thru cables.

She built this chuck-wagon-box we carry in the back of the Subaru (soon to be carried by the Tacoma) so we can pull
over and make a quick cup when on the road. Give me coffee or give me death. I roast my own beans too.!!

Damn, that is a great set-up. Yea, that Goalzero should be all you need for basic power. Coffee is good! Thanks for the pics.

You may have better gears already since you have the dually but single rear wheel Dodge trucks come with one option 3.42 gears from the factory so maybe your buddy's trucks come the same way. My Cummins was 900 ft/lbs of torque but never felt "right", it yanked the hell out of stuff but the tall gearing always made it feel like it was working harder than it needed too.

extra regear no matter ratio puts EXTRA wear/tear when not towing

4th gear will suffice most o the time

the best rpm range on the tach is 2500 to 4000 rpm w/o doing damage

This is debatable. There's a lot of talk about it over on the respective 4.88 and 5.29 threads. The main point being that the ridiculous gap between 4th and the two overdrive gears is such that moving to 4.88s does not put more significant wear on your truck. It reduces stress because the truck is actually able to utilize the 6th gear frequently.

Imagine towing in 5th and staying within your 2500-4000 range. That's what 4.88s and a tune will get you. On pretty much any other vehicle moving to 4.88s for a daily driver would be questionable, but the 3rd gen taco is special.
