Going camping in the end of July at the dunes. Are there any trails in the area worth checking out? We will also be in the Santa Barbara area as well if there any trails worth checking out there as well?

    Thanks!

Colson Canyon Rd, East of Santa Maria is pretty fun and there's a campsite up there too.

When you go down the back of the canyon beyond the campground, there's a split in the trail. I don't know what its like to the right, but to the left it's really cool, crossing shallow water (if it's not dry out there). I think it's a fun drive, especially after rain cause then it's a fun muddy drive. Very nice scenery either way.

When were you last in Colson Canyon? Is the gate at the top, near the campground open?

Los Padres NF site says it is still closed. But, if its not and Los Padres NF has not updated their website, then I am up there this weekend. Otherwise, its just a one way fire road ride to the closed gate.

    Road Closures
    • La Brea/Colson area past the Colson Campground (Forest Road 11N04)
    Closed campgrounds
    • La Brea Area: Barrel Springs, Wagon Flat
    • Buckhorn Ridge OHV Area - Bear Canyon Campground

Aw my bad! It's been a while since I've been up there. I would go with what the website says then, I haven't been up there in a while so I can't verify.
