Has anyone installed a train horn on their tacomas on here ?

If so where did you mount your compressor?

    Thanks

way, way back in the day I worked with a guy that had a 65 fastback whose dad worked for the railroad and they installed a train horn under the hood... had a blast with it and was super fun. No help on how to mount... merry christmas.

Yea I thought about that too and I was curious to if it would fit under the back seat storage compartment It's pretty spacy ‍♂️

They also sell a spare tire delete bracket but I really don't want to relocate my spare lol.

Don't, just don't. Put aftermarket LEDs in your headlights, add goofy emblems and grills, heck even do a Carolina squat if you want, but train horns are redder than a flat brimmed hat, Tapout shirt, jorts and white Oakleys wearing, trailer park living, meth head. I watched some douchebags scare an old couple a couple of months ago with one; some things just aren't funny and could very well be dangerous, in more ways than one.

On this truck, I think my first attempt would be to mount the compressor where most people install a 2nd battery (passenger side engine compartment just in front of windshield). The tank would probably get mounted on the side of a frame rail near the front of the bed.

The response will vary depending on what horn and compressor you are referring to. Tank, no tank? Horn size and number of horns? Sellers call most air horns "train horns", from 6" long with "direct drive" compressors up to multi trumpet systems using large compressors and tanks.
I mounted mine on the bumper crash bar with the compressor (Viair 444c) where the bin was behind the rear driver side seat. I had the tank underneath.
On my Tundra, I have dual 444c compressors mounted in the bed on the front wall (have a canopy), with 5 gallon take on pass side of bed above wheel well and 2.5 gal tank underneath. Horn will be mounted on passenger side inside frame rail. Installing single Hornblasters "Safety" Horn using 1/2" air line.
The perk of having onboard air is that I can fill tires, run my self leveling air bags, run air tools, and add a loud horn.

I love train horns, and have collected a few, but I would like to make it clear that it is selfish and unacceptable to blow train horns from passenger vehicles in traffic, or within earshot of unwilling participants. They are dangerous and illegal.

If that's you're plan, then you're an ass hole.

That said, there's plenty of space to mount air compressors and reservoir tanks on these trucks. I fit a >5 CFM air compressor in my passenger-side engine bay, and mounted a ~1.5 gallon air tank off the passenger-side frame.

This is for the purpose of airing up my tires on the trail, and not for blowing train horns. I do not have air horns on my truck, or on any other vehicles. I like train horns very much, but if you plan to install one in your truck and using it to terrorize people, then please ignore these suggestions and go fuck yourself, because that's not acceptable. Sorry for the coarse language... I'm assuming you're a level-headed respectful enthusiast, in which case, high-five dude. But I have to cover my bases.

If you want a cool horn you can use on public roadways, here's a legal and non-ass-hole option to consider: Install a 4-tone Cadillac horn. It is loud, unique, and gobs of fun. Plus it won't deafen anyone, or give them PTSD. I absolutely installed one of these on my truck, and I love it!

I always find it amusing when people say you are an asshole for installing air horns and using them. No, you are an asshole if you are one of those dumbasses mall crawling scaring people who are walking. If you use them for getting the attention of dumbasses who are about to cause a wreck, then I don't consider you an asshole. Cars these days are quieter and drivers dumber, getting their attention sometimes requires a louder horn. I have personally used an air horn against multiple drivers including a Challenger that kept forcing me towards the highway devider even with the horn blasting right next to his door and a cop down in Arizona that forced me off the road when he was looking at his phone. I actually got an apology from the cop at the next light.
So, there are reasons to have and use a train/air horn that don't make you an ass and reasons that do.
With that said, I personally set up and suggest anyone else set up your primary horn (on steering wheel) as your air horn and install a second circuit via a switch to your original horn to use as a courtesy horn. This can be done by either independence circuits or by using a relay which will allow you to switch from one to the other and use the OE circuit to trigger the horn.
My method is using a switch on the dash to choose which circuit I want my horn button to activate. I use a weatherproof 5 pin relay with the OE horn on the NO side (switch turned on to use) and the air horn on the NC side (switch not turned on to use). As most of my driving is highway, this allows me to turn the air horn off when I go into towns, parking lots, or other areas where courtesy beeps are preferable rather than needing to get someone's attention at speed.

Naw man I don't go around town doing stuff for fun.

If im sounding off the horn they probably deserved it because they either on they phone or cut me off in traffic. I wouldn't just go around for fun blasting people..

Same here but it was on my motorcycle! Saved me several times from drivers on their phones, never checked their blindspot, used a signal and just came right into my lane. I’ve even had to punch their driver side window to let them know they were pushing me into the railing …

My truck came with a single "train" horn in the engine bay. I'll snap a pic of it soon but it's great. It's much louder than any stock horn I've ever heard but not deafening - certainly gets people's attention quickly.

This kit looks almost identical to the one that came on my truck - Audew 12V 150dB Single Compressor Air Horn | Audew.com

It was wired directly to my steering wheel so functions like the stock horn. As far as legality, it passed a California emissions test, but the service tech definitely eyed it for an extra second.

Train horns and stutter tone (fire engine) horns are illegal for POVs to use on public roadways. Cops will be more than happy to pinch you for it, and you’ll be required to show proof that it was removed. Don’t do it. Not worth the hassle. 100% of those I’ve personally scratched for this violation have shown signs of arrested development.

And what percentage of those used the horn for preventing someone from hitting them vs driving through Walmart parking lots being a dumbass.
Personally, I enjoy when someone mentions what goes on in their state like it's God's law to the nation. It is up to each person to read, and have a basic understanding of the laws that apply to them.
Some states have "unreasonably loud" in the wording of their vehicle code. Who is to say what is unreasonable? I can show videos to any court of me being run off the road by other drivers while my horns are blaring right next to their driver side door. If I feel the general public is incapable of hearing or understanding the meaning of a horn, it is not unreasonable for me to feel that a louder horn is necessary to prevent damage to my vehicle, injury or death to myself or other occupants of my vehicle.
Plain and simple, don't be a dumbass.

This is where you and I strongly disagree. Most recipients are so disoriented by a train horn that it takes several seconds to figure out a) where the noise came from and b) who the noise is directed towards. Seriously. It's so loud its non-directional and in most people's minds isn't associated with a passenger vehicle. So for a solid second, as you're leaning on the horn they will continue to push into your lane while frantically looking for the 18 wheeler that isn't there.

They aren't safer. They're more dangerous. Much more dangerous. You're adding a jump scare to a situation where someone already isn't in control of their vehicle and/or fully aware of their surroundings. That increases the likelihood of a wreck, not decreases.

Case in point -your challenger story where they continued to drift even after you started on the horn.
