I understand what you’re saying. If they’re legal in your state, then knock yourself out. If they are not legal or if the term “reasonable” is mentioned in the relevant statute, role the dice and take your chances.

    Happy New Year

One of the biggest rules of the road is "Don't do something unexpected." Slamming on the brakes to let someone into the roundabout you're in, for example. Having an insanely loud horn falls into this category for me - even if I fuck up, I don't need to be jumping out of my seat at the same time, it isn't going to help the situation.

I also believe that having a really loud horn is no replacement for good defensive driving.

The stock horn is pretty weak.

if semis have them, then why not you? You’re on the same roads, with the same dumb drivers, and in a vehicle big enough to fit it.

the only reason people aren’t putting them on sedans is because there’s less room.

defensive driving doesn’t prevent an idiot from jumping out at a standstill. You can’t just crawl 5mph on a 45mph roadway all the time “just in case” someone decides to jump multiple lanes at 5mph because they missed a turn and don’t feel like looping around down the street for 2 minutes

some crashes happen because of that are unavoidable

which is why you drive a lifted truck with armor. So that when they do put in that extra effort to crash into you, it’s their car damaged not yours.

or even better. A louder horn to let them know from a distance “hey please press CTRL-Z on that 3 lane merge you just decided to do, to avoid collision”
    Like what a semi has

you too, like a semi, cannot just stop on a dime like a Porsche 911. Trucks do not perform like that.
All the reason to be visible as well.
    Raptor lights.
My headlight bulb went out. Was happy to know I still have raptor lights to be visible. Pulled into a parking lot popped the hood and changed my bulb with a spare.

I understand your point, and I do personally disagree. Having the challenger with the air horn, and other vehicles with the OE horn run me off the side, I'd rather have a horn that will rattle their car if they are incapable of hearing or seeing my vehicle. Funny point on the horn I used with the challenger, the OE horn in my '40 is noticeably louder.

If I remember, I'll load the video from today of a freaking BMW doing the same thing coming from a different on ramp.

And to make a note here, the only time I have used my air horns when I wasn't about to have my trucks fucked up by retards was when I was installing them. Usually did it on a Saturday and made sure the neighbors (that I cared about) knew I was doing it. I agree that mall crawling idjits out for a laugh are using it in an unreasonable fashion.

plus it will be hard to hear the stock weak horn over their cabin conversation with passenger about “jump 3 lanes now” over Darude - Sandstorm at high volume

I am guessing there exists different options on how to configure upgraded horns. Whether that be model, decibel level, or quantity installed.

what’s really fun is when you’re hauling a 4,000lb plus trailer with factory small brakes and people jump right in front for no reason like it’s not even there

the stock horn, like any other part on the truck, exists because the bean counters in charge figured out a way to spec the cheapest, barely passing part to install for profit

This exactly. The hardest rule of driving that only was learnt with maturity, is that its not my job to wage war upon the stupid. It's to protect my metal. And if protecting my metal means yielding my space to the stupid and letting them go about their stupid day without a dose of audio or high beam justice, then please go ahead. It's not my job to be judge dredd.

^^sometimes I have to repeat that last sentence to myself while counting to ten. Get on the brakes, let them have the space, it's not my job to serve justice, I hope their girlfriend gave them worms.

The hardest one for me to deal with is the idiots with offroad lights or shitty high beams on right behind me. That right hand hovers over the work light switch just itching for photonic Justice...

A little bit of space goes a very long way.

-lights off in conditions that warrant lights per DMV rules
-high beams on when they should not be
-fog lights on when there is no fog

not sure why this does not get enforced. Could earn a lot of money in the form of tickets and potentially persuade people to stop doing dumb shit in the future

Usually the idiots that enjoy scaring innocent folks with a train horn are the same idiots who think it’s cool to blind oncoming drivers with their cheap, illegal, aftermarket headlights…
