I have a third gen Tacoma. V6 with 6 speed automatic. I was wondering if anyone saw a write up yet on changing the tranny fluid. The second generation tacomas has an awesome write up on here.

Same process as 2nd Gen. Why you want to change fluid already?

Just FYI this seems super early to change the fluid. I haven't checked the annual, but I'd bet they recommend 60K or higher.

The fluid has been known to cause cancer in the state of California and I believe is also linked to global warming and killing polar bears. Unfortunately the only gluten free vegan transmission fluid is still in testing.

I thought Toyota WS AT fluid was non-GMO.

are you talking about changing the fluid in the pan of the tranny? guess you could drain it and replace with the exact amount of new fluid. doing that would be like draining 1 quart of oil from the engine and replacing it. result would be the same the lesser amount of new fluid would just mix in with the fluid left in the tranny. way later at some point the only real way to change the tranny fluid is a full flush. IMO

    THE BIGGER QUESTION IS,
What kind of oil is best for the 3rd Gen Tacoma. :spy:

Dump and fill is the best way to do it. Very easy to damage the trans doing a "flush." That's why most shops recommend a dump and fill every 30k or so. Less fluid is swapped so it's a bit cheaper each time, but you don't run the risk of damaging it with a flush.

Could you explain? The shops I have talked to said draining a few quarts does little to remove the dirt trapped in the pathways.

By flush, you mean pulling the feed lines for the cooler and running fluid in the return and letting the line from trans to cooler dump into a catch pan. It makes sense because at least half your trans fluid is inside the torque converter. It does pose a risk of not being properly lubed inside during the flush. If you dump and fill fluid every 30 or 40k miles, the transmission fluid never gets very dirty. Now a 150k miles vehicle that has never been serviced, would still show very dirty fluid after and dump and fill. That's where the proper intervals come into play. Some people like the flush. Personally, I just don't trust it because of the stories I've heard of problem after flushes.

How can a flush (new fluid) harm anything..?? That makes no sense to me at all...
    Whenever I get up and see some shit...I "flush"...I'm happy...No more "shit"..:thumbsup::thumbsup:

    1. drain pan
    2. fill to trickle overflow
    3. add 3.3 qts; if 3.3 qts can't be added, procede to Step 4 then back to Step 3.
    4. start engine, cycle shifter P-S, idle 30 seconds
    5. Repeat 1-4.
    6. Perform Temp Mode fluid level check

I'd have 8-10 quarts on hand.

That's a "drain & fill"... not a "flush".... Just puts back what ya took out.. the tranny may still be low...!! Watch how much you get out and then put in MORE.... and let it get up to temp and do the check... small little bit draining out..!! now you are full, but still 2/3's dirty..! About 12 qts. in there you will only change 3.5 or so doing the D&F... but if you do this a few times in 2 yrs...you will be doing a good thing...

I'm curious exactly how much will drain out by doing a drain and fill. That's what I plan on doing at 30k or so.

No not the new fluid causing a problem (although that is an all together other debate for high mileage transmissions that haven't been serviced) but the actual service itself. Fluid doesn't get dirty if you do a fluid dump and fill and change the filter reasonably often.

8675545 is the part number of the last two I've done with fluid and filter swap.
